This paper describes the application of Semantic Networks for the detection of defects in images of metallic manufactured components in a situation where the number of available samples of defects is small, which is rather common in real practical environments. In order to overcome this shortage of data, the common approach is to use conventional data augmentation techniques. We resort to Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that have shown the capability to generate highly convincing samples of a specific class as a result of a game between a discriminator and a generator module. Here, we apply the GANs to generate samples of images of metallic manufactured components with specific defects, in order to improve training of Semantic Networks (specifically DeepLabV3+ and Pyramid Attention Network (PAN) networks) carrying out the defect detection and segmentation. Our process carries out the generation of defect images using the StyleGAN2 with the DiffAugment method, followed by a conventional data augmentation over the entire enriched dataset, achieving a large balanced dataset that allows robust training of the Semantic Network. We demonstrate the approach on a private dataset generated for an industrial client, where images are captured by an ad-hoc photometric-stereo image acquisition system, and a public dataset, the Northeastern University surface defect database (NEU). The proposed approach achieves an improvement of 7% and 6% in an intersection over union (IoU) measure of detection performance on each dataset over the conventional data augmentation.

<p>With the increasing penetration of renewable resources such as wind and solar, the operation and planning of power systems, especially in terms of large-scale integration, are faced with great risks due to the inherent stochasticity of natural resources. Although this uncertainty can be anticipated, the timing, magnitude, and duration of fluctuations cannot be predicted accurately. In addition, the outputs of renewable power sources are correlated in space and time, and this brings further challenges for predicting the characteristics of their future behavior. To address these issues, this paper describes an unsupervised method for renewable scenario forecasts that considers spatiotemporal correlations based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), which have been shown to generate high-quality samples. We first utilized an improved GAN to learn unknown data distributions and model the dynamic processes of renewable resources. We then generated a large number of forecasted scenarios using stochastic constrained optimization. For validation, we used power-generation data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wind and solar integration datasets. The experimental results validated the effectiveness of our proposed method and indicated that it has significant potential in renewable scenario analysis.</p>

This article addresses the problem of outlier detection for wireless sensor networks. As increasing amounts of observational data are tending to be high-dimensional and large scale, it is becoming increasingly difficult for existing techniques to perform outlier detection accurately and efficiently. Although dimensionality reduction tools (such as deep belief network) have been utilized to compress the high-dimensional data to support outlier detection, these methods may not achieve the desired performance due to the special distribution of the compressed data. Furthermore, because most existed classification methods must solve a quadratic optimization problem in their training stage, they cannot perform well in large-scale datasets. In this article, we developed a new form of classification model called “deep belief network online quarter-sphere support vector machine,” which combines deep belief network with online quarter-sphere one-class support vector machine. Based on this model, we first propose a model training method that learns the radius of the quarter sphere by a sorting method. Then, an online testing method is proposed to perform online outlier detection without supervision. Finally, we compare the proposed method with the state of the arts using extensive experiments. The experimental results show that our method not only reduces the computational cost by three orders of magnitude but also improves the detection accuracy by 3%–5%.

Vehicle detection based on very high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing images is beneficial in many fields such as military surveillance, traffic control, and social/economic studies. However, intricate details about the vehicle and the surrounding background provided by VHR images require sophisticated analysis based on massive data samples, though the number of reliable labeled training data is limited. In practice, data augmentation is often leveraged to solve this conflict. The traditional data augmentation strategy uses a combination of rotation, scaling, and flipping transformations, etc., and has limited capabilities in capturing the essence of feature distribution and proving data diversity. In this study, we propose a learning method named Vehicle Synthesis Generative Adversarial Networks (VS-GANs) to generate annotated vehicles from remote sensing images. The proposed framework has one generator and two discriminators, which try to synthesize realistic vehicles and learn the background context simultaneously. The method can quickly generate high-quality annotated vehicle data samples and greatly helps in the training of vehicle detectors. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can synthesize vehicles and their background images with variations and different levels of details. Compared with traditional data augmentation methods, the proposed method significantly improves the generalization capability of vehicle detectors. Finally, the contribution of VS-GANs to vehicle detection in VHR remote sensing images was proved in experiments conducted on UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets using up-to-date target detection frameworks.

Abstract Conditional image generation lies at the heart of computer vision and conditional generative adversarial networks (cGAN) have recently become the method of choice for this task, owing to their superior performance. The focus so far has largely been on performance improvement, with little effort in making cGANs more robust to noise. However, the regression (of the generator) might lead to arbitrarily large errors in the output, which makes cGANs unreliable for real-world applications. In this work, we introduce a novel conditional GAN model, called RoCGAN, which leverages structure in the target space of the model to address the issue. Specifically, we augment the generator with an unsupervised pathway, which promotes the outputs of the generator to span the target manifold, even in the presence of intense noise. We prove that RoCGAN share similar theoretical properties as GAN and establish with both synthetic and real data the merits of our model. We perform a thorough experimental validation on large scale datasets for natural scenes and faces and observe that our model outperforms existing cGAN architectures by a large margin. We also empirically demonstrate the performance of our approach in the face of two types of noise (adversarial and Bernoulli).

This paper proposes two new data augmentation approaches based on Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks (DCGANs) and Style Transfer for augmenting Parkinson’s Disease (PD) electromyography (EMG) signals. The experimental results indicate that the proposed models can adapt to different frequencies and amplitudes of tremor, simulating each patient’s tremor patterns and extending them to different sets of movement protocols. Therefore, one could use these models for extending the existing patient dataset and generating tremor simulations for validating treatment approaches on different movement scenarios.
