In this paper the role of images in argumentative settings is analyzed from a cognitive angle. In particular, the proposal of this paper is to see visual argumentation as a specific form of extended and distributed cognition. In order to develop this idea, some of Wittgenstein’s insights are used to put evidence produced by research on temporal-spatial reasoning processes into philosophical perspective. Some contemporary argumentative analyses of visual argumentation are also discussed using commercial and political examples. The paper finishes with the notion of collective minds in order to specify the general idea of arguing with images as extended cognition.

We already are hybrid humans, fruit of a kind of co-evolution of both our brains and the common, scientific, social, and moral knowledge we have produced by ourselves, starting from the birth of material culture with our ancestors until the recent effects generated by the whole field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). We all are constitutively natural born cyborgs; that is, biotechnological hybrid minds. Our minds should not be considered to be located only in the head; human beings have solved their problems of survival and reproduction, distributing cognitive and ethical functions to external nonbiological sources, props, and aids, which originate cultures. This chapter also illustrates the interplay between cultures and distributed cognition, taking advantage of the so-called disembodiment of mind, and stresses the problem of the co-evolution between brains and cultures. The second part of the chapter is related to the analysis of the interplay between cultures and cognition and of some consequences concerning the problem of intercultural communication in light of the role of moral mediators, docility, and cyberprivacy. Finally, I discuss some suggestions concerning the problem of what I call the principle of isolation of cultures, with respect to the effects of ICTs.

The concept of “dwelling” is offered as a foundation for learning and for under-standing the role of space in educational settings. This chapter is a first attemptto connect the concept of dwelling, perceived as power over space in the phe-nomenological sense, with the concept of meta-learning as researched in exper-imental psychology, in distributed cognition, and in experiential learning, allfields sharing the idea that for learning to become self-regulated individualexperiences should be acknowledged, some freedom of choice should be offered,and change should be stimulated. Examples of learning environments with adwelling quality are presented together with a list of behavioral patternstrating the role of space. In this way the chapter shows education managers howto take the quality of dwelling into account in evaluating and designing contextsof learning.

AbstractThe present review is conceived to be a contribution from the double perspective of a semiotician and a designer to the current debate on the extended mind and on distributed cognition, focusing on the role of things (artefacts, material culture) for the emergence of agency in animate beings. The theory of material engagement as conceived by Lambros Malafouris was formally introduced seven years ago, proposing an idea of boundless cognition and reformulating key notions such as agency, intentionality, and mental representations, philosophically framed with the help of approaches such as postphenomenology (Ihde 2009; Ihde and Malafouris 2019). There is much to commend about a non-hierarchical, interdependent relationship between the world and living organisms — and more specifically between material things and human beings. Nevertheless, a balanced review of the notion of “material agency” is still called for. In this review, I show that an asymmetry can be introduced into the relationship between artefacts and human beings without committing the “sin” of anthropocentrism.

Sighing is both performative and vital activity, and exemplifies the role of ‘primordial affectivity’ in the organism’s co-creativity with its environment. Emerging from the organism’s ‘cares’, transforming the atmosphere and the affect that initiated it, the sigh is a striking instance of distributed cognition, an action reaching through ancient respiratory processes to the most deliberate forms of self-care. Premodern psychology understood the sigh as an attempt to free the circulation of vital and animal spirits from blockage caused by the overheating of imaginative and estimative faculties when obsessed by the image of a loved object. Contemporary science similarly sees the chief physiological action of the sigh, the opening of air spaces in the lungs, as dynamically engaged with affective experience. In the domain of psychoanalysis, the sigh is a transitional phenomena; it buys time and gives us the time to open up to something new. The sigh relaxes constriction, opening the throat and enabling speech. Hence its vital importance in amorous verse. ‘Le Sigh’ proposes that sighing is the template for the concluding couplet of Shakespeare’s sonnet form. Its innovation is to give us the breathing room to bear our care-full lives.

From the perspective of design, Latour's cycles of inscriptions and mobility promises to be of significance to the future exploration of self-organizing tendencies, as well as distributed cognition in decentralized decision making between heterogeneous team members scattered across time and space. Of particular relevance is the role of the artefact in the absence or lack of communication as an object- to-think-with, as well as to negotiate design decisions over time and space. Artefacts, as in this study- Banarasi toys, acting as probes not only accumulate design decisions, but also inscribe the worldview of the members on themselves. Their mutability and mobility endows on them the promising role of gathering members and eventually an entire community around them. On completion of the cycles, they become a microcosm of the worldview, similar to Latour's map encapsulating the earth.
