This paper is concerned with the design of a finite-time positive observer (FTPO) for continuous-time positive linear systems, which is robust regarding the L2-gain performance. In positive observers, the estimation of the state variables is always nonnegative. In contrast to previous positive observers with asymptotic convergence, an FTPO estimates positive state variables in a finite time. The proposed FTPO observer, using two Identity Luenberger observers and based on the impulsive framework, estimates exactly the state variables of positive systems in a predetermined time interval. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to guarantee the L2-gain performance of the estimation error. Finally, the performance and robustness of the proposed FTPO are validated using numerical simulations.

The global stability of positive  discrete-time time-varying nonlinear systems with time-varying scalar feedbacks is investigated. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of discrete-time positive time-varying linear systems are given. The new conditions are applied to discrete-time positive time-varying nonlinear systems with time-varying feedbacks. Sufficient conditions are established for the global stability of the discrete-time positive time-varying nonlinear systems with feedbacks.

This paper presents new sufficient conditions to cope with the filtering problem for continuous-time linear systems subject to sensor saturation. A generalized sector condition has been used to handle the saturation in the measured output. The H∞ performance was considered and a quadratic Lyapunov function was employed in order to derive the design conditions. The conditions are presented in terms of matrix inequalities that become linear when a scalar parameter is fixed. The efficiency of the proposed conditions and their capability to deal with different levels of saturation are illustrated by numerical examples.

A new modified state variable diagram method is proposed for determination of positive realizations with reduced numbers of delays and without delays of linear discrete-time systems for a given transfer function. Sufficient conditions for the existence of the positive realizations of given proper transfer function are established. It is shown that there exists a positive realization with reduced numbers of delays if there exists a positive realization without delays but with greater dimension. The proposed methods are demonstrated on a numerical example.

By using coincidence degree theory as well as a priori estimates and Lyapunov functional, we study the existence and global stability of periodic solution for discrete delayed high-order Hopfield-type neural networks. We obtain some easily verifiable sufficient conditions to ensure that there exists a unique periodic solution, and all theirs solutions converge to such a periodic solution.

Positive fractional continuous-time linear systems with singular pencils A method for checking the positivity and finding the solution to the positive fractional descriptor continuous-time linear systems with singular pencils is proposed. The method is based on elementary row and column operations of the fractional descriptor systems to equivalent standard systems with some algebraic constraints on state variables and inputs. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the fractional descriptor systems are established.

We investigate a nonautonomous two-species competitive system with stage structure and double time delays due to maturation for two species, where toxic effect of toxin liberating species on nontoxic species is considered and the inhibiting effect is zero in absence of either species. Positivity and boundedness of solutions are analytically studied. By utilizing some comparison arguments, an iterative technique is proposed to discuss permanence of the species within competitive system. Furthermore, existence of positive periodic solutions is investigated based on continuation theorem of coincidence degree theory. By constructing an appropriate Lyapunov functional, sufficient conditions for global stability of the unique positive periodic solution are analyzed. Numerical simulations are carried out to show consistency with theoretical analysis.
