To provide universal verifiability, cryptographic voting protocols often require a broadcast channel to spread the election data to the public. The basic requirements on such a broadcast channel are similar for most protocols, for example that the channel maintains a memory of all broadcast messages and that nothing can be deleted from the channel’s memory. In this paper, we provide a formal definition for such broadcast channels with memory and describe their properties. We also analyze the significance of a broadcast channel with memory in cryptographic voting protocols and propose that such a channel is provided in form of a service that we call bulletin board. Based on this service, we analyze some real-world problems that cryptographic voting protocols might have and provide possible solutions. For this we define a generic interface for the main board functionalities, which offers a flexible way of extending the basic properties of a bulletin board to comply with all sorts of additional requirements.

A particularly successful effort to engage the public in science has been to move the nearly countless galaxies imaged by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to citizen scientists in a project known widely as Galaxy Zoo (URL; http://www.galaxyzoo.org). By examining the motivations, methods and appeal of Galaxy Zoo to the participating public, other models of citizen science might be purposefully formulated to take advantage of the success exhibited in Galaxy Zoo. In addition, we want to understand the reasons people engage in science in informal settings in order to better enhance teaching methods in formal settings. We pursued an investigation of the underlying reasons for the success of Galaxy Zoo revealed by inductively analyzing contributors posts and discussions through the accompanying Galaxy Zoo online bulletin board. Using a grounded theory approach, we learned that many of these motivations originate in the aesthetic power of astronomical images or the opportunity to become an empowered and contributing scientist, which Galaxy Zoo successfully harnesses, while not compromising the scientific value of the project.

Background: To summarize the cases of physicians overwork death between Jan 2007 and Dec 2018, the tragedy merits the attention of the authorities and policy-makers to increase their efforts to reduce death among physicians in China. Methods: Data were extracted from medical databases, local mass media, official documents and medical Bulletin Board System (BBS), in which only included articles, reports and news listed in the retrieval strategy, and unpublished data were excluded. Results: Overall, 110 cases (7 females and 103 males) were enrolled in this study. Most incidents have occurred since 2012, especially in 2017. Of these, 86 (78.18%) physicians worked in public tertiary hospitals, four times more than the number of cases taking place in secondary hospitals. Additionally, overwork death was the most common in surgery-related departments that account for up to 65 (59.1%). Notably, these events, taking place in first-tier cities and the southeastern coastal areas of China, included 27 chief physicians, 31 associate of chief physicians, 21 attending physicians, 10 resident physicians and 4 standardized training physicians. Conclusion: Overwork death among Chinese physicians is not only a contemporary health problem but also a critical social issue. The laws and regulations should be perfected to prevent the events. Meanwhile, the public should be aware of the need for more understanding and trust in physicians in China.

Fraud and misconduct are firstly introduced by clearly defining the meaning of the two words along with what constitutes good data quality and data integrity. Falsification, Fabrication and Plagiarism are discussed. The concept of how regulators view high quality data is described along with the consequences of falsification. The chapter then goes on to present multiple definitions of fraud and misconduct to show similarities and differences between regulatory authorities in the UK and US as compared to other organisations such as the Royal College of Physicians, the Medical Research Council Policy and UK Research Integrity office. Additionally, five landmark and historical cases are presented to demonstrate what constitutes fraud. The General Medical Counsel's role in protecting public safety by ensuring proper medical standards is described along with the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) and the EU Competent Authority roles in conducting investigations of suspected fraud and misconduct cases. The important roles of whistleblowers are described as well as COPE's role in reviewing published medical journal's research. Practical examples are provided to be used for the detection of fraud as well as specific approaches used by the pharmaceutical industry to detect fraudulent data. In the US, databases are available to conduct searches for individuals who have committed fraud such as the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) and the PHS Administration Action Bulletin Board. Additionally, the process for how fraud and misconduct cases are handled in the UK are discussed along with the options available for regulators, such as the MHRA, on sharing information with the public.

Integrity is the property of information concerning protection against its unauthorized modifications and forgeries. This chapter discusses bulletin board (BB), hash functions, MACs (Message Authentication Codes) and digital signatures, as schemes for maintaining integrity of data. BBs protect data by simply disclosing them to the public, i.e. an entity cannot modify them without being watched by others. Hash functions, Macs, and digital signatures protect data by detecting illegitimate modifications while attaching values to the data. Namely, when an entity illegitimately modifies the data, the modified results become inconsistent with the attached values. When hash functions, MACs and digital signatures are compared regarding the ability to convince entities that the data are authorized ones, hash functions cannot enable entities to convince others, and by MACs, entities can convince others only when relevant secrets are properly protected. On the other hand, digital signatures enable anyone to convince others without constraints.

The mosque is a non-profit institution, which organizes many religious, social, educational and da'wah activities. The activities held to depend on a lot of funds obtained from the community as a source of mosque funding. Based on the results of the study, the sources of mosque funding were obtained from charity boxes attached to the walls of the mosque consisting of the construction of mosques, infaq of mosques, those entitled to receive, orphans, and the poor. Also from the charity box during Friday prayers, regular and non-permanent donors. Based on the money obtained, the mosque held social activities, education, and da'wah. As the manager's responsibility to the public, monthly income and expenditure reports are always posted on the mosque's bulletin board so that all can see the report. Besides, it also sends special financial reports to regular donors. This financial transparency makes it easier for mosques to raise funds from the public. The preparation of the mosque's financial report involves the treasurer and daily staff, as is known by the chairman of the mosque's takmir as the person in charge. As a community organization, this mosque is also monitored directly by the public by publishing its financial statements.

Keywords: mosque; religion; social; education; da'wah

Objective: Computerized bulletin board services (BBSs) have existed for several decades; in recent years there has been increased use and acceptance. We have established a drug information service called The Pharmacy on a local public-access BBS, the Cleveland FreeNet. The goal of this service is to provide drug information to the lay public as well as healthcare professionals. Description: The Pharmacy is divided into 4 areas: (1) About the Pharmacy, which provides instructions for use; (2) Drug Information, which contains postings on selected drug information topics that are prepared by the BBS staff; (3) Pharmacy Questions, the most popular feature, where FreeNet users are invited to post questions, the answers to which are provided by clinical, staff, and consultant pharmacists, as well as baccalaureate and graduate pharmacy students; and (4) Investigational Studies, where patient recruitment for investigational studies is done. Results: A total of 259 questions have been posted in the first 3 years of operation. An average of 5.2, 7.78, and 8.7 questions/month have been posted in 1992, 1993, and 1994, respectively. Four drug information monographs have been prepared and posted, and approximately 5 investigational studies have been advertised. Conclusions: A computerized BBS is a new means of distributing drug information to the public and healthcare professionals. In addition to meeting a need for a public service of drug information in the community, it permits increased visibility for pharmacists and a unique learning experience for students.
