The search for ferroelectric materials capable of producing high electric charge and power densities is important for developing a new generation of ultrahigh-power-density ferroelectric energy storage devices and autonomous megawatt power supplies.

The need of energy storage and related devices are increasing day by day, due to the expansion of global population. To deal with such universal crisis, current energy storage devices like supercapacitors need to be improved in their performances and qualities. In this regard, quantum dots (QDs) are extensively being studied, especially due to their excellent properties. The utilization of QDs in supercapacitors is huge as electrode material as well as for fluorescent electrolytes. Various QDs based composites have been made for the same, which includes doping with various metals, non-metals and carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) like graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) etc. In the present chapter the current advancement and futuristic possibilities of supercapacitors have been mentioned extensively.

Lead-based electroceramics such as Pb(Zr.Ti)O3 (PZT) and its derivatives have excellent piezoelectric, pyroelectric and energy storage properties and can be used in a wide range of applications. Potential lead-free replacements for PZT such as potassium sodium niobate (KNN) and sodium bismuth titanate (NBT) have a much more limited range of useful properties and have been optimized primarily for piezoelectric applications. Here, we review the initial results on a new generation of lead-free electroceramics based on BiFeO3-BaTiO3 (BF-BT) highlighting the essential crystal chemistry that permits a wide range of functional properties. We demonstrate that with the appropriate dopants and heat treatment, BF-BT can be used to fabricate commercially viable ceramics for applications, ranging from sensors, multilayer actuators, capacitors and high-density energy storage devices. We also assess the potential of BF-BT-based ceramics for electrocaloric and pyroelectric applications.

The ability to achieve high surface areas with nanomaterials brought several advancements in energy storage devices and their applications in different industries. Supercapacitors, a new generation of energy storage devises, have quick charge and discharge abilities, and hold as much energy as batteries and other chemical storage devices. The present study focuses on the effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) inclusions in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) electrolytes for the improved capacitance values, which may affect the lifetime, charge holding, and charging and discharging rates of the graphene nanoflake-based supercapacitors. In this research, various supercapacitors were constructed using the reduced graphene oxide nanoflakes, PVA and PVA incorporated with CNTs, and the best candidates were selected for the future considerations. The test results showed that the CNT concentrations of 0.1–1.0wt% in PVA enhanced the capacitance (charge holding capacity) and reduced the internal resistance of the electrolytes significantly. This study may open up new possibilities for the supercapacitors and other energy storage devices currently under developments.
