A design formulation of microstrip reflectarrays is presented in this paper. Previous published articles, referring to this subject, present results for reflectarrays on a uniform dielectric substrate. In this work microstrip reflectarrays with offset feed, dual polarization, and side-lobe level under control, fabricated on a uniaxial substrate were studied. The method of moments, combined with the full-wave technique, and the corresponding dyadic Green's function is used for the specification of the electromagnetic field scattered by the array. The theremin is one of the earliest electronic musical instruments. It is named after the Russian physics Professor Lev S. Termen who invented it in 1919. This musical instrument belongs to a very short list of devices which are played without physical contact between the musician and the instrument. theremin players complain about the interference that any object in a radius of approximately 3 meters produces when playing the theremin, modifying the intonation of the instrument. This is a problem when playing in small scenarios, with other musicians which move around it. With the aim of reducing the degree of interference from nearby obstacles, some metallic isolating bars conforming an antenna array can be placed around the theremin pitch antenna. The paper shows different simulations calculated with the commercial software Ansoft HFSS, a tool which allows three-dimensional full wave electromagnetic field simulation, with radio frequencies, millimeter and micro waves, and experimental measures, both showing a reduction in the effect of the interference.

An electromagnetic field penetrating through an aperture or slot of a metallic enclosure generates many standing-waves due to the resonance inside the metallic enclosure, which results in reduced shielding performance. This paper examines the effect of absorbent material (absorber) to improve shielding effectiveness (SE) of large metallic rooms with apertures or slots. First, a theoretical formulation to extract the Q-factor of an absorber with any shape is proposed. Using this, the contribution of the absorber to the SE improvement of a shielded room with different sized circular apertures was investigated. Second, the resonant mode density inside the shielded room was classified into non-resonant, under-moded, and over-moded states with an increase in frequency, and the effect of the absorber in each frequency range was examined. The analysis was conducted through numerical simulation using a commercial full-wave simulator and experimental measurement using a fabricated actual shielded room and commercial absorbers. The accuracy of the analysis results was verified through the comparison of simulated and measured results. The analysis results ensured that the absorber was not effective in improving the SE in the non-resonant state of the metallic room. It was also confirmed that the absorber was effective in improving the SE in the over-moded state of the metallic room where a severe standing-wave occurs. In addition, the SE improvement level differed depending on the location of the absorber in the room.

The electromagnetic field leakage levels of nonionizing radiation from a microwave oven have been estimated within a complex indoor scenario. By employing a hybrid simulation technique, based on coupling full wave simulation with an in-house developed deterministic 3D ray launching code, estimations of the observed electric field values can be obtained for the complete indoor scenario. The microwave oven can be modeled as a time- and frequency-dependent radiating source, in which leakage, basically from the microwave oven door, is propagated along the complete indoor scenario interacting with all of the elements present in it. This method can be of aid in order to assess the impact of such devices on expected exposure levels, allowing adequate minimization strategies such as optimal location to be applied.
