In 1997 the Internet was seen by many as a tool for radical reinterpretation of physicality and gender. Cybertheorists predicted we would leave our bodies behind and interact online as disembodied minds, and that the technology would reshape the way we saw ourselves. However, physicality has proved to be an inextricable part of all our interactions. Changing Internet technology has allowed Net users to find a myriad ways to perform and express their gender online. In this paper I consider attitudes to gender on the Net in 1997, when the main concerns were the imbalance between men and women online and whether it was possible or desirable to bring the body into online interactions. In much of the discourse surrounding gender online, a simple binary was assumed to exist. I go on to consider the extent to which those attitudes have changed today. Through my own experience of setting up a women’s community on Livejournal, and my observations of a men’s community set up in response, I conclude that though traditional attitudes to gender have largely translated to the Net and the binary is still the default view, some shifts have occurred. For example, between 1997 and today there seems to have been a fundamental change in perceptions of women’s attitudes to adversarial debate, and an increase in awareness of genders beyond the binary. In addition, experience and preliminary investigation lead me toward a hypothesis that today’s female-identified Net users are engaged in more conscious and active exploration and performance of their gender online than male-identified users are.

Infant’s minutes long babbling bouts or energetic reaching for or mouthing of whatever they can get their hands on gives very much the impression of active exploration, a building block for early learning. But how can we tell active exploration from the activity of an immature motor system, attempting but failing to achieve goal directed behaviour? I will focus here on evidence that infants actively increase motor activity and variability when faced with opportunities to gather new information. I will discuss mechanisms generating movement variability, and suggests that, in the various forms it takes, from deliberate hypothesis testing to increasing environmental variability, it could be exploited for learning. However, understanding how infant exploratory behavior contributes to learning will require more in-depth investigations of both the nature of and the contextual modulation of behavioural variability.

Abstract In past decade, the use of cognitive aids such as textual, visual and audio in 3D-Virtual Learning Environments is increasing day by day as it guide and facilitate both the students and teachers to perform the task with ease in Virtual Environment. In recent studies, it has been observed that the use of cognitive aids in virtual learning environments reduce mental load on learner but at the same time it also minimizes active exploration which negatively affect their performance in non-supervised environment. Therefore, some researchers have shown negative concern about the use of cognitive aids in 3D-Virtual Learning Environments (3D-VLEs). In this paper, we presents the idea of ”Adaptive Repetition” as control strategy for active exploration in 3D-VLEs. At the beginning of experiment in 3D-VLEs , students is given full support to perform the experiment with help of cognitive aids. Using a fuzzy logic based approach , the amount of aids are minimized whenever the experiment is repeated. The adaptive repetition approach put the students in active learning process and enables them to actively explore the learning environment. Ultimately, the negative effects of using cognitive aids in 3D-VLEs is minimized.

This chapter describes an approach to estimate reservoir productivity during the active exploration and development of a geothermal prospect. This approach allows a reservoir model to be updated by overcoming the severe time limitations associated with accessing sites for drilling and well testing under snowy and mountainous conditions. Performed in parallel with the conventional standard approach, the new approach enables us to obtain a first estimate of the reservoir productivity at an early time and to make successful project management decisions. Assuming a practical geothermal field, the procedures of the new approach are demonstrated here in detail. Finally, frequency distributions for the expected production rates and changes in the reservoir pressure at an arbitrary time are obtained during an assumed operational period.

AbstractResearch is still ongoing with regard to types of exploratory movement by active touch and its key functions in individuals with visual impairment. The aim of the present study was to describe and identify different types of exploratory movement performed by individuals with visual impairment in their exploration of geometric shapes. A total of twelve participants were asked to explore a number of simple and complex geometric shapes. The research design consisted of two research phases. In the first phase, the participants were asked to describe and, if possible, to identify the properties of each shape. In the second phase, the participants were asked to describe their hand movements during active exploration. The findings indicated that the participants utilized different movements to extract the featural and global properties of the shapes. It was also observed that some patterns of exploratory movement were present in all of the participants’ strategies, which indicated issues of laterality. Finally, the research highlighted that by observing patterns of exploratory movement, educators of students with visual impairment can determine which strategies may be worth exploring with a view to their adoption in teaching practices and instruction. Keywords: visual impairment, active touch, geometric shapes, think -aloud protocols, laterality, teaching practices
