Torque distribution control is a key technique for four-wheel independent-drive electric vehicles because it significantly affects vehicle stability and handling performance, especially under extreme driving conditions. This paper, which focuses on the global yaw moment generated by both the longitudinal and the lateral tire forces, proposes a new distribution control to allocate driving torques to four-wheel motors. The proposed objective function not only minimizes the longitudinal tire usage, but also make increased use of each tire to generate yaw moment and achieve a quicker yaw response. By analysis and a comparison with prior torque distribution control, the proposed control approach is shown to have better control performance in hardware-in-the-loop simulations.

An antilock braking system (ABS) is one of the most important components in a road vehicle, which provides active protection during braking, to prevent the wheels from locking-up and achieve handling stability and steerability. The all-electric ABS without any hydraulic components is a potential candidate for electric vehicles. To demonstrate and examine the all-electric ABS algorithms, this article proposes a single-wheel all-electric ABS test bench, which mainly includes the vehicle wheel, the roller, the flywheels, and the electromechanical brake. To simulate dynamic operation of a real vehicle’s wheel, the kinetic energy of the total rotary components in the bench is designed to match the quarter of the one of a commercial car. The vertical force to the wheel is adjustable. The tire-roller contact simulates the real tire-road contact. The roller’s circumferential velocity represents the longitudinal vehicle velocity. The design and analysis of the proposed bench are described in detail. For the developed prototype, the rated clamping force of the electromechanical brake is 11 kN, the maximum vertical force to the wheel reaches 300 kg, and the maximum roller (vehicle) velocity reaches 100 km/h. The measurable bandwidth of the wheel speed is 4 Hz–2 kHz and the motor speed is 2.5 Hz–50 kHz. The measured results including the roller (vehicle) velocity, the wheel velocity, and the wheel slip are satisfactory. This article offers the effective tools to verify all-electric ABS algorithms in a laboratory, hence saving time and cost for the subsequent test on a real road.

The mode transition of single-shaft parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) between engine and motor has an important impact on power and drivability. Especially, in the process of mode transition from the pure motor-drive operating mode to the only engine-drive operating mode, the motor starting engine and the clutch control problem have an important influence on driving quality, and solutions have a bit of room for improving dynamic performance. In this paper, a novel mode transition control method is proposed to guarantee a fast and smooth mode transition process in this regard. First, an adaptive sliding mode control (A-SMC) strategy is presented to obtain the desired torque trajectory of the clutch transmission. Second, a proportional-integral (PI) observer is designed to estimate the actual transmission torque of the clutch. Meanwhile, a fractional order proportional-integral-differential (FOPID) controller with the optimized control parameters by particle swarm optimization (PSO) is employed to realize the accurate position tracking of the direct current (DC) motor clutch so as to ensure clutch transmission torque tracking. Finally, the effectiveness and adaptability to system parameter perturbation of the proposed control approach are verified by comparison with the traditional control strategy in a MATLAB environment. The simulation results show that the driving quality of the closed-loop system using the proposed control approach is obviously improved due to fast and smooth mode transition process and better adaptability.

The range-extended electric vehicle is proposed to improve the range anxiety drivers have of electric vehicles. Conventionally, a gasoline/diesel generator increases the range of an electric vehicle. Due to the zero-CO2emission stipulations, utilizing fuel cells as generators raises concerns in society. This paper presents a novel charging strategy for fuel cell/battery electric vehicles. In comparison to the conventional switch control, a fuzzy control approach is employed to enhance the battery’s state of charge (SOC). This approach improves the quick loss problem of the system’s SOC and thus can achieve an extended driving range. Smooth steering experience and range extension are the main indexes for development of fuzzy rules, which are mainly based on the energy management in the urban driving model. Evaluation of the entire control system is performed by simulation, which demonstrates its effectiveness and feasibility.
