Magnesia partially stabilised zirconia (Mg-PSZ) ceramics are renowned for their excellent nechanical properties. These are effected by processing conditions and purity of starting materials. It has been previously shown that small additions of strontia (SrO) have the effect of removing the major contaminant, silica (SiO2).The mechanism by which this occurs is not fully understood but the strontia appears to form a very mobile liquid phase at the grain boundaries. As the sintering reaches the final stages the liquid phase is expelled to the surface of the ceramic. A series of experiments, to examine the behaviour of the liquid grain boundary phase, were designed to produce compositional gradients across the ceramic bodies. To achieve this, changes in both silica content and furnace atmosphere were implemented. Analytical electron microscope techniques were used to monitor the form and composition of the phases developed. This paper describes the results of our investigation and the presentation will discuss the work with reference to liquid phase sintering of ceramics in general.

Energy-storage performances of NaNbO3 system were effectively enhanced by composition engineering inducing relaxor behavior and grain refinement. Excellent Wrec = 3.7 J cm−3 and η = 82.1% were achieved in the NN-0.04CZ-0.16BNT multilayer capacitors.

Multilayer dielectric capacitors were fabricated from nanocomposite precursor comprised of BaTiO 3@ TiO 2 core–shell nanosized particles and poly(vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF–HFP)) polymer matrix (20 vol%). The multilayer capacitors showed very high discharge speed and high discharged energy density of around 2.5 J/cm3 at its breakdown field (~ 166 MV/m). The energy density of the nanocomposite multilayer capacitors was substantially higher than the energy density of commercially used power capacitors. Low cost, flexible structure, high discharge rate and energy density suggest that the nanocomposite multilayer capacitors are promising for energy storage applications in many power devices and systems.

AbstractThis study involved the determination of the effects of composition and microstructure on the fracture toughness and susceptibility to environmentally enhanced crack growth of several ceramic materials used in multilayer capacitors. Indentation-fracture procedures were used to measure KIC as well as to assess the possible effects of internal stresses on the fracture behavior of these materials and to correlate dielectric aging phenomena with strength. The environmentally enhanced crack growth behavior of these materials was determined by conducting dynamic fatigue tests in water.
