Study on the Relationship between Economic Development and Energy Consumption in Henan Province of China

This paper aims to identify the relationship among energy consumption, FDI, and economic development in China from 1993 to 2017, taking Zhejiang as an example. FDI is the main factor of the rapid development of Zhejiang’s open economy, which promotes the development of the economy, but also leads to the growth in energy consumption. Based on the time series data of energy consumption, FDI inflow, and GDP in Zhejiang from 1993 to 2017, we choose the vector auto-regression (VAR) model and try to identify the relationship among energy consumption, FDI, and economic development. The results indicate that there is a long-run equilibrium relationship among them. The FDI inflow promotes energy consumption, and the energy consumption promotes FDI inflow in turn. FDI promotes economic growth indirectly through energy consumption. Therefore, improving the quality of FDI and energy efficiency has become an inevitable choice to achieve the transition of Zhejiang’s economy from high speed growth to high quality growth.

The traditional opinions regard energy as the main factor for the economic development, but not the key one, because there are different conclusions from the practical researches on the relationship between the energy consumption and economic development. The article utilizes the Granger casual test and Cointegration test to analyze the dynamic relationship between energy consumption and economic development in China. Based on our conclusion that economic development relies on energy consumption, some suggestions are given for energy saving and development in the long-term.

Abstract. Cultivated land resources are the basic production factors that carry human survival and economic development. Exploring the relationship between cultivated land change and economic development has become a hot issue for scholars.in this paper,The methods of regression analysis, land use elastic coefficient method, location entropy are used to empirically describe the relationship between cultivated land change and economic development.The results show: Since the 20th century, the change of cultivated land area has experienced three distinct stages of change, showing a process of recovery, decline, and steady evolution in Henan Province. The per capita cultivated land area is characterized by an upward trend, and the per capita cultivated land area is increasing year by year. In general, the intensive use of cultivated land in Henan Province is still not high, but the momentum of a sharp decline in cultivated land is basically controlled. The change of cultivated land area and economic development showed a four-time curve fitting relationship, which indicates that the path dependence of economic development on cultivated land occupation still exists, and cultivated land supports the rapid development of economy.The research results of the relationship between cultivated land change and economic development by using location entropy show that the spatial layout of the urban area is less than 0, and the regularity is not strong.The location where the location entropy is between 0–1 is mainly located in the central part of Henan Province;The cities with location entropy greater than 1 are mainly located in the eastern part of Henan.

Abstract Background: Green economic development refers to reducing pollution emissions and increasing production efficiency while promoting economic growth. Although the transformation of energy consumption’s structure is “green," it may not promote green economic development due to the constraints of existing technical conditions. Thus, the development and use of renewable energy may be detrimental to production efficiency and economic growth. Therefore, the technological advancement approach that can help coordinate the relationship between energy consumption structural transformation and green growth should be identified. In addition, we should determine whether to develop new technologies or improve existing ones. Results: This paper uses the Global-Malmquist-Luenberger approach based on Slacks-Based Measure method to measure the levels of green economic development among the 27 member states of the European Union (excluding the Republic of Malta). Moreover, this study focuses on the impact of energy consumption’s structure transformation on green economic development through the threshold regression method. Empirical results reveal (1) the inverted N-shaped relationship between energy consumption’s structure transformation and green economic development under the existing technical conditions. The degree of energy consumption’s structure transformation can merely promote green economic development in the interval of 0.67–10.87. That is, the renewable energy consumption (% of total energy consumption) is less than 0.67% or greater than 10.87%, which is not conducive to green economic development. (2) Developing new technologies can stimulate the positive effect of energy consumption’s structure transformation on green economic development. However, the improvement of existing technologies fail to exhibit an effective impact on the relationship between energy consumption’s structure transformation and green economic development. (3) Coordinating the relationship between energy consumption’s structure transformation and green economic development can also be achieved by reducing the dependence of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on fossil fuels. Conclusions: With the existing technical conditions, the blind development and use of renewable energy may not be conducive to green economic development. When the degree of energy consumption’s structure transformation exceeds an appropriate range, it will adversely affect green economic development. Therefore, in order to better coordinate the relationship between energy consumption’s structure transformation and green economic development, European Union member states, especially those with a high degree of energy consumption’s structure transformation, should paid more attention to develop new energy technologies rather than improve existing ones. In addition, to mediate the transformation of energy consumption’s structure that promotes green economic development, we must prioritize and adjust the industrial structure and rationally allocate resources to reduce the GDP’s on fossil energy prior to increasing the intensity of renewable energy consumption.

Energy is an important material basis for social and economic development. With the rapid economic development, energy is increasingly becoming an important issue of socio-economic development. As China's "two-oriented society" pilots Hunan Province, a major breakthrough occurred in the transformation of economic growth, adjusting the industrial structure and promoting energy conservation and environmental protection, but still faces shortage of energy supply and demand and supply imbalances, impacting on sustainable economic development. This paper introduces the economic growth based on the previous results and summarized the relationship between energy consumption and classification; also introduces the theory of economic growth, industrial structure and related econometric models providing a theoretical basis and methods of analysis for this study. Secondly, through the relevant data collected and selected first from second and third industry time series data of economic growth and energy consumption of the 1990-2013 year of Hunan Province, the paper established econometric model of industrial structure and the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the analysis of the results obtained: the secondary industry is the leading cause of long-term increase in energy consumption which in turn is the driving force of the tertiary industry development. Finally, the relevant suggestions are made for industrial restructuring and for ensuring security of energy supply perspective.

PurposeWith the rapid development of the economy, carbon emissions have also risen sharply. This study explores the relationship between the two by combining the literature of relevant fields and maps the analytical framework from the knowledge base to the research frontier model using CiteSpace.Design/methodology/approachUsing CiteSpace and data statistical tools, we conducted a bibliometric and visual analysis of nearly ten thousand research papers on carbon emissions and economic development published in the Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases from 1991 to 2021.FindingsIt shows that research on economic development and carbon emissions is developing steadily and involves a wide range of fields. Notably, keywords such as “carbon emissions,” “economic growth,” and “energy consumption” had high frequency, centrality, and persistence. “carbon emissions,” “economic growth,” and “energy consumption” had high frequency, centrality, and persistence. Research institutions in the USA and China have made great contributions to research on economic development and carbon emissions. The authors should continue to enrich and improve research on related subjects and concerns to reasonably plan the path of carbon emission reduction and economic development.Originality/valueThe study analyzes the evolution of the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth to provide scholars a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the relationship from an international perspective.
