The current climatic scenario requires the use of innovative solutions to increase the production of electricity from renewable energy sources. Multilevel Power Inverters are a promising solution to improve the penetration of renewable energy sources into the electrical grid. Moreover, the performance of MPIs is a function of the modulation strategy employed and of its features (modulation index and switching frequency). This paper presents an extended and experimental analysis of three-phase five-level Cascaded H-Bridges Multilevel Inverter performance in terms of efficiency and harmonic content considering several MC PWM modulation strategies. In detail, the CHBMI performance is analyzed by varying the modulation index and the switching frequency. For control purposes, the NI System On Module sbRIO-9651 control board, a dedicated FPGA-based control board for power electronics and drive applications programmable in the LabVIEW environment, is used. The paper describes the modulation strategies implementation, the test bench set-up, and the experimental investigations carried out. The results obtained in terms of Total Harmonic Distorsion (THD) and efficiency are analyzed, compared, and discussed.

Renewable energy source (RES) enables us to diversify our energy supply. Renewable energy sources are getting more and more widespread, mainly due to the fact that they generate energy by keeping the environment clean. This increases our security of supply and improves European competitiveness creating new industries, jobs, economic growth and export opportunities, whilst also reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. This article proposes a simulation of a three-phase low voltage grid with power generation from photovoltaic sources. The proposed system consists of 192 photovoltaic (PV) panels distributed in 32 rows with each 12 PV panels.

In this paper, the possibility of using synchronous generators with magnetoelectric excitation for the autonomous consumers’ supply with the use of renewable energy sources is considered. To eliminate a number of the disadvantages associated with the difficulty of energy-efficient regulation of the generated parameters, such as the generated current and voltage, the use of modified multi-winding synchronous generators with permanent magnets is proposed. It allows solving the problem of controlling this type of generator. In addition, the use of this type of generator helps to increase the amount of energy generated. The authors have proposed several synchronous generators with permanent magnets of various supply network architectures: single-phase, two-phase and traditional three-phase types. This will simplify the design of architecture for several cases of consumer power supply systems. It will also help to eliminate the need to organize a balanced distribution of loads in phases to prevent accidents, damage and/or disabling of consumers themselves. Here, we considered mathematical descriptions of several types of generators that differ in their assembling, in particular, the number of phases (one-, two- and three-phase generators), the number of pairs of permanent magnet poles on the rotor, and the method of switching the generator windings among themselves. Using the developed mathematical descriptions that describe the operation of every single winding of the generator, their mathematical models were developed in the SimInTech mathematical modeling environment. The results of the mathematical modeling of these generators were presented; their interpretation for use with renewable energy sources was made; and the methods of using these generators were described. The developed mathematical descriptions of synchronous generators with permanent magnets can be used for further study of their operation. It can also help for the development of control systems and power systems for micro-grid energy complexes that use renewable energy sources to increase the energy efficiency of micro-grid systems.

In recent years, power demand of industrial applications has increased significantly reaching some megawatts. The use of multilevel converters for applications of medium and high powers is proposed as a solution to drawback semiconductor technology. A multilevel converter not only achieves high power ratings, but also enables the use of renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic can be easily interfaced to a multilevel converter system for a high power application. This paper presents the simulation study in Matlab/Simulink of a grid connected photovoltaic three phase Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter with DC/DC boost converter for constant and variable solar radiation.
