The winding is the core component of a transformer, and the technology used to diagnose its current state directly affects the operation and maintenance of the transformer. The mechanical vibration characteristics of a dry-type transformer winding are studied in this paper. A short-circuit test was performed on an SCB10-1000/10 dry-type transformer, and the vibration signal at the surface was measured. Based on actual experimental conditions, a vibration-simulation model of the transformer was established using COMSOL Multiphysics software. A multiphysics coupling simulation of the circuit, magnetic field, and solid mechanics of the transformer was performed on this model. The simulation results were compared with measured data to verify the validity of the simulation model. The simulation model for a transformer operating under normal conditions was then used to develop simulation models of transformer-winding looseness, winding deformation, and winding-insulation failure, and the winding fault vibration characteristics were analyzed. The results provide a basis for detecting and analyzing the mechanical state of transformer windings.

The automotive heating and ventilating air condition (HVAC) system, when vibrating, can generate various types of noises such as humming, hissing, clicking and air-rushes. These noises can be characterised to determine their root causes. In this study, the humming-type noise is taken into consideration whereby the noise and vibration characteristics are measured from various HVAC components such as power steering pump, compressor and air conditional pipe. Four types of measurement sensors were used in this study - tachometer for rpm tracking; accelerometer for the vibration microphone for the noise; and sound camera for the visualization measurement. Two types of operating conditions were taken into consideration - they were “idle” (850 rpm) and “running” (850-1400 rpm) conditions. A constant blower speed was applied for both conditions. The result shows that the humming noises can be determined at the frequency range of 300-350 Hz and 150-250 Hz for both idle and running conditions, respectively. The vibration of the power steering pump shows the worst acceleration of 1.8 m/s2 at the frequency range of 150-250 Hz, compared to the compressor and air conditional pipe. This result was validated with the 3D colour order and sound camera analyses, in which the humming noise colour mapping shows dominance in this frequency range.

Background: Winding deformation is one of the most common faults in power transformers, which seriously threatens the safe operation of transformers. In order to discover the hidden trouble of transformer in time, it is of great significance to actively carry out the research of transformer winding deformation detection technology. Methods: In this paper, several methods of winding deformation detection with on-line detection prospects are summarized. The principles and characteristics of each method are analyzed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method as well as the future research directions are expounded. Finally, aiming at the existing problems, the development direction of detection method for winding deformation in the future is prospected. Results: The on-line frequency response analysis method is still immature, and the vibration detection method is still in the theoretical research stage. Conclusion: The ΔV − I1 locus method provides a new direction for on-line detection of transformer winding deformation faults, which has certain application prospects and practical engineering value.
