Changing the construction of mart Meter (SM) devices, more specifically equipping them with more than one communication module, facilitates the elimination of a Transformer Station Data Concentrator (TSC) module, moving its function to one of the SMs. The opportunity to equip a chosen device in an additional communication module makes it possible to use it as an acquisition node. The introduction of this solution creates a problem with the optimum selection of the above-mentioned node out of all the nodes of the analyzed network. This paper suggests the criterion of its location and, as per the criterion, the way of conduct using the elements of the graph theory. The discussion is illustrated with the examples of the possibility to use the method for the optimization of the architecture of the network. The described method makes it possible to choose the location of a backup acquisition node as well as locate intermediary nodes (signal repeaters) in case of a failure (removal) of some SM devices. In the era of the common introduction of dispersed telemetric systems requiring an adequate level of performance and reliability of information transmission, the offered method can be used for the optimization of the structures of Smart Grids.

The concept of smart home is gaining in popularity. A new interactive terminal applied to smart home basing on Z-Wave is given. The interactive terminal includes control module, source module, level shift module, display module, Z-Wave communication module and peripheral circuit module, etc. The Z-Wave communication module is connected with control module in two-way mode, and communicates with smart meter, smart socket and intelligent switch. Also, Z-Wave communication module receives the tariff information from grid. Peripheral circuit module is connected with control module in single-way mode, and provides control module with clock information and protection. The installation of the terminal is simple and convenient. The terminal can be split easily, and also has the strong anti-interference ability.

In preparation for the upcoming home delivery services that rely on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), we developed a new multi-hop radio network that is laid over a smart meter network transferring electric energy information only. In this network, a UAV follows, for navigation purposes, the topology of a virtual network overlaid on the physical smart meter network. We established a service management control method which does not rely on image analysis or map information processing, i.e. processes that consume precious power resources of the UAV. Instead, navigation is based on the routing technology. The current distance between the UAV and a node of the smart meter network is measured by means of the radio transmission loss value, therefore determining the position of the UAV. A two-layer network model has been proposed. One layer consists of a network of nodes in a residential area with scattered buildings – a location that is safer to navigate – while the other is an access network of nodes in a densely populated area. Then, we proposed methods to determine the direction of movement towards the next hop node on the data-link layer and the end node on the network layer, which is the target destination. We implemented a software-based test system and verified the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A smart meter was designed with power line communication (PLC) function. We designed the optimized power carrier module by adding a switching circuit that controlled by a microcontroller in coupling circuit on the basis of common design. Improved its communication efficiency and reduced energy consumption. Energy metering module used C8051F360 microcontroller as the main control chip and used high accurate metering chip ATT7022B to collect electronic signal. We designed a multifunctional and easy-to-use intelligent man-machine interface by using Beijing DWIN Company’s industrial serial LCD touch screen.
