Abstract Background: The use of contraceptives has become prevalent among women in Ethiopia. Oral contraceptive use has been suggested to trigger changes in glucose metabolism, energy expenditure, blood pressure, and body weight, among the various populations and ethnic groups. Objective: To elucidate the pattern of fasting blood sugar (FBS), blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) among combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills users, taking into account other confounding factors including socioeconomic conditions and physical activity status. Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study design was employed. A total of 110 healthy women using pills were recruited as cases. Another 110 healthy women not using any hormonal contraceptives were recruited as matched controls. A study was conducted between October 2018 and January 2019. Fasting Capillary blood sample was collected from the study participants for the estimation of the FBS level. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured and means arterial blood pressure was calculated for each participant. Body weight and height were measured to compute body mass index. Data obtained was entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 23 software packages. Results: FBS level in users was significantly increased compared to controls (88.55 ± 7.89 vs. 86.00 ± 9.85 in users and controls respectively, P = 0.025). There was a significant difference in mean arterial blood pressure of users compared to controls (88.2 ± 8.48 vs. 86.0 ± 6.74 respectively, P=0.04). The mean weight and body mass index of users were significantly increased (P = 0.03 and P = 0.003, respectively). Changes in mean fasting blood sugar level and mean weight of users were independent (P = 0.27 and P = 0.46) to the duration of use (3-12, 13-24 and ≥ 25 months). On the other hand, changes in mean body mass index and mean arterial blood pressure of users were dependent of the duration of use (P = 0.03 and P = 0.000 respectively). Conclusions: Overall, oral contraceptive pills use appears to cause a 2.9% increase in fasting blood glucose level, a 2.5% increase in mean arterial blood pressure and a 3.9% increase in body mass index among the users.

Systemic arterial blood pressure and heart rate (fH) were measured in unanesthetized, unrestrained larvae and adults of the paradoxical frog, Pseudis paradoxus from Sao Paulo State in Brazil. Four developmental groups were used, representing the complete transition from aquatic larvae to primarily air-breathing adults. fH (49-66 beats/min) was not significantly affected by development, whereas mean arterial blood pressure was strongly affected, being lowest in the stage 37-39 larvae (10 mmHg), intermediate in the stage 44-45 larvae (18 mmHg), and highest in the juveniles and adults (31 and 30 mmHg, respectively). Blood pressure was not significantly correlated with body mass, which was greatest in the youngest larvae and smallest in the juveniles. In the youngest larvae studied (stages 37-39), lung ventilation was infrequent, causing a slight decrease in arterial blood pressure but no change in heart rate. Lung ventilation was more frequent in stages 44-45 larvae and nearly continuous in juveniles and adults floating at the surface. Bradycardia during both forced and voluntary diving was observed in almost every advanced larva, juvenile, and adult but in only one of four young larvae. Developmentally related changes in blood pressure were not complete until metamorphosis, whereas diving bradycardia was present at an earlier stage.

Object. It is taken for granted that patients with hypertension are at greater risk for intracerebral hemorrhage during neurosurgical procedures than patients with normal blood pressure. The anesthesiologist, therefore, maintains mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) near the lower end of the autoregulation curve, which in patients with preexisting hypertension can be as high as 110 to 130 mm Hg. Whether patients with long-standing hypertension experience more hemorrhage than normotensive patients after brain surgery if their blood pressure is maintained at the presurgical hypertensive level is currently unknown. The authors tested this hypothesis experimentally in a rodent model.Methods. Hemorrhage and edema in the brain after needle biopsy was measured in vivo by using three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy in the following groups: WKY rats, acutely hypertensive WKY rats, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR strain), and SHR rats treated with either sodium nitroprusside or nicardipine. Group differences were compared using Tukey's studentized range test followed by individual pairwise comparisons of groups and adjusted for multiple comparisons.There were no differences in PaCO2, pH, and body temperature among the groups. The findings in this study indicated that only acutely hypertensive WKY rats had larger volumes of hemorrhage. Chronically hypertensive SHR rats with MABPs of 130 mm Hg did not have larger hemorrhages than normotensive rats. There were no differences in edema volumes among groups.Conclusions. The brains of SHR rats with elevated systemic MABPs are probably protected against excessive hemorrhage during surgery because of greater resistance in the larger cerebral arteries and, thus, reduced cerebral intravascular pressures.

During surfactant treatment of respiratory distress syndrome, 23 premature newborns were investigated with continuous amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (cerebral function monitors). Simultaneously, arterial blood pressure and transcutaneous blood gas values were recorded. A short(<10 minutes) but significant decrease in cerebral activity was seen in almost all neonates immediately after the surfactant instillation, in spite of an improved pulmonary function. In 21 of 23 neonates, a transient fall in mean arterial blood pressure of 9.3 mm Hg (mean) occurred coincidently with the cerebral reaction. Neonates in whom intraventricular hemorrhage developed tended to have lower presurfactant mean arterial blood pressure (P> .05), but they had a significantly lower mean arterial blood pressure after surfactant instillation (P < .05). No other differences were found between neonates in whom intraventricular hemorrhage developed and those without intraventricular hemorrhage. The present findings demonstrate that an acute cerebral dysfunction may occur after surfactant instillation. In some vulnerable neonates with arterial hypotension and severe pulmonary immaturity,the fall in mean arterial blood pressure may increase the risk of cerebral complications and could be related to an unchanged rate of intraventricular hemorrhage after surfactant treatment.
