Compounds with the LiNbO3-type structure are important for a variety of applications, such as piezoelectric sensors, while recent attention has been paid to magnetic and electronic properties. However, all the materials reported are stoichiometric. This work reports on the high-pressure synthesis of lithium tungsten bronze LixWO3 with the LiNbO3-type structure, with a substantial non-stoichiometry (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1). Li0.8WO3 exhibit a metallic conductivity. This phase is related to an ambient-pressure perovskite phase (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) by the octahedral tilting switching between a−a−a− and a+a+a+.

The phase composition of (1-x)BaO·xSrO·0.7TiO2·0.3Nb2O5 (BSTN) composite ceramics was analyzed by XRD, and the effect of Sr/Ba ratio on the dielectric properties of BSTN was investigated by impedance analyzer. The results showed that any sample with different x value contained two phases-the perovskite phase and the tungsten bronze phase. The dielectric constants of BSTN basically decreased while the tanδ increased with the increase in x value. Both dielectric constant and tanδ decreased with the applied frequency increased for the same x value. There were two Curie points for BSTN composite ceramics. The first one belonging to the perovskite phase decreased with the increase in x value, but the second one belonging to the tungsten bronze phase kept almost constant at about 300°C.

0.7BaO·0.3SrO·0.3Nb2O5·0.7TiO2 (SBN/BST) composite ceramics werefabricated using a Powder-Sol (P-S) method with Nb2O5fine powder suspended in the barium strontium titanate (abbreviated as BST) solsolution. By X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations, it is found that thetetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) phase and perovskite phase were co-present incompositions. The average grain size of BST and SBN phase is 140 nm and 2.2 μm,respectively. The room temperature relative dielectric constant is 1445 forthis sample measured at 1 kHz and zero bias. In the room temperature, thepyroelectric coefficient of the 0.7BaO·0.3SrO·0.3Nb2O5·0.7TiO2is 39 nc/cm2·°C. The maximum value of FDis about 2.4×10-5 Pa-1/2at 45°C.

The effect of SrO/BaO ratio on the phase structure of the (1-x)BaO.xSrO.0.7TiO2.0.3Nb2O5 composite ceramics was investigated by XRD and SEM. The results showed that the SrO/BaO ratio increased in the perovskite phase and kept almost constant in the tungsten bronze phase as the content of SrO increased in the composite system. The constant SrO/BaO ratio in the tungsten bronze phase was about 0.667. The crystal lattices of the perovskite phase in the composite system were larger and smaller respectively than that in pure (1-x)BaO.xSrO.TiO2 system when SrO/BaO ratio were respectively <0.667 and >0.667. The crystal lattices of the perovskite phases in both systems showed the same crystal lattices when SrO/BaO = 0.667. Affected by the SrO/BaO ratio required in the tungsten bronze phase in composite system, the contents and average grain size of the perovskite phase decreased, while the content of tungsten bronze phase increased as the SrO/BaO ratio increased.

AbstructWe succeeded in the preparation of strontium-barium niobate (Sr0.3Ba0.7Nb2O6 : SBN30)that have a tetragonal tungsten bronze type structure thin films on SrTiO3 (100), STO, or La doped SrTiO3 (100), LSTO, single crystal substrates by a spin coating process. LSTO substrate can be used for electrode. A homogeneous coating solution was prepared with Sr and Ba acetates and Nb(OEt)5 as raw materials, and acetic acid and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether as solvents. The coating thin films were sintered at temperature from 700 to 1000°C for 10 min in air. It was confirmed that the thin films on STO substrate sintered above 700°C were in the epitaxial growth because the 16 diffraction spots were observed on the pole figure using (121) reflection. The <130> and <310> direction of the thin film on STO were oriented with the c-axis in parallel to the substrate surface. However, the diffraction spots of thin film on LSTO substrate sintered at 700°C were corresponds to the expected pattern for (110).

In past work, dichloropropene + 17% Pic (1,3-D + Pic) at 327 L·ha–1 plus pebulate provided good control of nematode, soil fungi, and nutsedge in mulched tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and is considered the best alternative for methyl bromide (MBr) + chloropicrin (Pic), which is scheduled for phase-out in the United States by Jan. 2001. Metam-sodium did not provide acceptable pest control. In the present study, metam-Na (295 L·ha–1 combined with Pic (168 kg·ha–1) + 4.5 kg·ha–1 pebulate, and 1,3-D + 35% Pic at 168 and 225 L·ha–1 + pebulate were compared to MBr-Pic (98-2% at 345 kg·ha–1 and 67-33% at 505 kg·ha–1). Fumigants were injected into the bed except metam-Na and pebulate were surface-applied and incorporated and drip tubing and mulch were applied. Marketable yields with MBr-Pic, 225 L·ha–1 1,3-D + Pic, and metam-Na + Pic were higher than with the check. Yields with metam-Na alone or with additional water before transplanting were similar to the check. Nutsedge was controlled with MBr-Pic and all treatments with pebulate. Nematode root-gall ratings were high on tomato grown without fumigants (8.9 rating on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 = no galling), low with MBr-Pic (0.33), and intermediate with all other treatments (2.2 to 5.5) except with 168 L·ha–1 1-3-D + Pic (8.3). This study indicates that metam-Na + Pic + pebulate also is a possible alternative to MBr-Pic for tomato.

Does a commitment to the moral standing of animals obligate us to try to end predation? “Creation ethicists,” who answer yes, believe that if we could, we ought to create new species of animals who would not need predation. The probable result would be that all animals are domestic. “Abolitionists,” who answer no, argue that the only way we can treat animals well is by leaving them alone. We should not interfere with predation, and should phase out domestic animals. The result would be that all animals are wild. This chapter raises some worries about the creationist position, although it grants that these worries are inconclusive. Since we would be substituting different kinds of animals for the ones that exist now, we need to understand the moral status of groups, including species, and to determine what is bad about extinction, before we can decide whether creating new species is a good solution to the problem of predation.
