Active restoration leads to rapid recovery of aboveground biomass but limited recovery of fish diversity in planted mangrove forests of the North Brazil Shelf

Mangrove forests provide a large variety of ecosystem services (ES) to coastal societies. Using a case study focusing on the Ajuruteua peninsula in Northern Brazil and two ES, food provisioning (ES1) and global climate regulation (ES2), this paper proposes a new framework for quantifying and valuing mangrove ES and allow for their small-scale mapping. We modelled and spatialised the two ES from different perspectives, the demand (ES1) and the supply (ES2) side respectively. This was performed by combining worldwide databases related to the global human population (ES1) or mangrove distribution and canopy height (ES2) with locally derived parameters, such as crab catches (ES1) or species-specific allometric equations based on local estimates of tree structural parameters (ES2). Based on this approach, we could estimate that the area delivers the basic nutrition of about 1400 households, which equals 2.7 million USD, and that the mangrove biomass in the area contains 2.1 million Mg C, amounting to 50.9 million USD, if it were paid as certificates. In addition to those figures, we provide high-resolution maps showing which areas are more valuable for the two respective ES, information that could help inform management strategies in the future.

Baited lander represents a low impact technique, an alternative to the traditional trawl sampling for collecting data on fish diversity and abundance, especially for threatened species such as Chondrichthyes living in sensitive habitats. In this study, distribution and abundance of cartilaginous fish were compared between two geographic areas, the southern Adriatic Sea and the north-western Ionian Sea, with two low impact sampling gears, an experimental bottom longline and a baited lander. Species diversity was evaluated by applying ecological indices and difference in mean abundances were tested using multivariate analysis. A total of 13 species of cartilaginous fish were collected. Significant differences in the assemblage recorded in the same area using different sampling tools were detected and no significant differences were detected among different areas explored with the same method. Using longline, the most abundant species collected in both areas was Galeus melastomus, while using lander, the most observed species were Dalatias licha in the southern Adriatic Sea and Hexanchus griseus in the north-western Ionian Sea. According to IUCN classification, of the 13 species collected, 2 are near threatened and 5 are threatened. A better governance of sensitive habitats coinciding with the essential fish habitat for these species would ensure them a better conservation status.

The stable isotope composition of planktonic foraminifera correlates with evidence for pulses of terrigenous sediment in a sediment core from the upper continental slope off northeastern Brazil. Stable oxygen isotope records of the planktonic foraminiferal species Globigerinoides sacculiferand Globigerinoides ruber(pink) reveal sub-Milankovitch changes in sea-surface hydrography during the last 85,000 yr. Warming of the surface water coincided with terrigenous sedimentation pulses that are inferred from high XRF intensities of Ti and Fe, and which suggest humid conditions in northeast Brazil. These tropical signals correlate with climatic oscillations recorded in Greenland ice cores (Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles) and in sediment cores from the North Atlantic (Heinrich events). Trade winds may have caused changes in the North Brazil Current that altered heat and salt flux into the North Atlantic, thus affecting the growth and decay of the large glacial ice sheets.

<p>Large oceanic eddies are formed by the retroflection of the North Brazil Current (NBC) near 8°N in the western tropical Atlantic. The EUREC<sup>4</sup>A-OA/Atomic cruise took place in January - February 2020, and extensively documented two NBC rings. The NBC flows northward across the Equator and pass the mouth of the Amazon River, entraining fresh and nutrient-rich water along its nearshore edge. From December to March, the Amazon river discharge is low but a freshwater filament stirred by a NBC ring was nevertheless observed. The strong salinity gradient can be used to delineate the NBC ring during its initial phase and its westward propagation. Using satellite sea surface salinity and ocean color associated to in-situ measurements of salinity, temperature, dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity and fugacity of CO<sub>2</sub> we characterize the salinity and biogeochemical signature of NBC rings.</p>

In February-March 1963, during the Equalant Operation for the ICITA program, 476 drift-bottles were released at the equatorial waters off the northern Brazilian coast (01ºS to 09ºN and 043ºW to 053ºW). Thirty-five, bottles were recovered (7,4%). Those were classed in five groups according to their different velocity ranges and areas of recovery (Trinidad Island; Lesser Antilles; Caribbean and Florida area; north Brazil; northeastern Brazil). The recoveries of bottles released within 300 nm off the northern and northeastern coast of Brazil confirmed a strong current along the north and northeast coast in northwestern direction (South Equatorial Current and branches). In late February-early March the bottles showed maximum velocities of this current (3,6 knots). The region off the northern coast of Brazil, between 05ºN and 09ºN up to 050ºW seems to have been under the influence of an eastward component of the surface current in this same period, while at late March this influence appears to have been weaker. In the region from Trinidad Island to Yucatan Peninsula the current seems to be stronger on the northeastern side of the Caribbean Sea.

This study aims to analyze the distribution pattern of aboveground biomass (AGB) in the mangrove ecosystem of West Kalimantan Safety. In addition, it also analyzes the differences in biomass and carbon stocks in the condition of mangrove forests. The study of the distribution pattern of AGB of mangrove forests was carried out between August and September 2018. Determination of the location of the study was based on a conceptual approach in the dimensions of spatial temporal that is using the Porposive Random Sampling method. Vegetation analysis was carried out by a single plot measuring 50 m x 50 m at each selected location. Based on vegetation analysis data it was found that the density of mangrove stands on the Peniti coast ranged from 38 to 185 ind /ha, with an average of 88.25 ± 66.15 ind./ Ha. The AGB of pinch mangrove forests ranged from 8.85 to 84.82 Mg / ha with the largest total AGB distributed in the stand diameter class of more than 80 cm.   Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pola distribusi aboveground biomass (AGB) pada ekosistem mangrove Peniti Kalimantan Barat. Selain itu juga untuk menganalisis perbedaan biomassa, dan cadangan karbon pada kondisi hutan mangrove. Kajian pola distribusi AGB hutan mangrove Peniti dilakukan antara bulan Agustus dan September 2018. Penentuan lokasi penelitian didasarkan pada pendekatan konseptual dalam dimensi spasio temporal yaitu menggunakan metode Porposive Random Sampling. Analisis vegetasi dilakukan dengan metode petak tunggal berukuran 50 m x 50 m pada setiap lokasi terpilih. Berdasarkan data analisis vegetasi didapatkan bahwa kerapatan tegakan mangrove di pesisir Peniti berkisar antara 38 sampai 185 ind/ha, dengan rata-rata 88,25±66,15 ind./ha. AGB tegakan hutan mangrove Peniti berkisar antara 8,85 sampai 84,82 Mg/ha dengan total AGB terbesar terdistribusi pada kelas diameter tegakan lebih dari 80 cm.

Mangrove forests are important coastal wetlands because of the ecosystem services they provide especially their carbon potential. Mangrove forests productivity in the Niger Delta are poorly quantified and at risk of loss from oil pollution, deforestation, and invasive species. Here, we report the most extensive stem girth survey yet of mangrove plots for stand and canopy structure in the Niger Delta, across tidal and disturbance gradients. We established twenty-five geo-referenced 0.25-ha plots across two estuarine basins. We estimated aboveground biomass (AGB) from established allometric equations based on stem surveys. Leaf area index (LAI) was recorded using hemispherical photos. We estimated a mean AGB of 83.7 Mg ha–1 with an order of magnitude range, from 11 to 241 Mg ha–1. We found significantly higher plot biomass in close proximity to a protected site and tidal channels, and the lowest in the sites where urbanization and wood exploitation was actively taking place. The mean LAI was 1.45 and ranged fivefold from 0.46 to 2.41 and there was a significant positive correlation between AGB and LAI (R2 = 0.31). We divided the plots into two disturbance regimes and three nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) invasion levels. Lower stem diameter (5–15 cm) accounted for 70% of the total biomass in disturbed plots, while undisturbed regimes had a more even (∼25%) contribution of different diameter at breast height (DBH) size classes to AGB. Nipa palm invasion also showed a significant link to larger variations in LAI and the proportion of basal area removed from plots. We conclude that mangrove forest degradation and exploitation is removing larger stems (>15 cm DBH), preferentially from these mangroves forests and creates an avenue for nipa palm colonization. This research identifies opportunities to manage the utilization of mangrove resources and reduce any negative impact. Our data can be used with remote sensing to estimate biomass in the Niger Delta and the inclusion of soil, leaf properties and demographic rates can analyze mangrove-nipa competition in the region.
