A Numerical Study of Labyrinth Seal Flutter

A numerical study of a labyrinth-type turbine seal flutter in a large turbofan engine is described. The flutter analysis was conducted using a coupled fluid-structure interaction code, which was originally developed for turbomachinery blade applications. The flow model is based on an unstructured, implicit Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solver. The solver is coupled to a modal model for the structure obtained from a standard structural finite element code. During the aeroelasticity computations, the aerodynamic grid is moved at each time step to follow the structural motion, which is due to unsteady aerodynamic forces applied onto the structure by the fluid. Such an integrated time-domain approach allows the direct computation of aeroelastic time histories from which the aerodynamic damping, and hence, the flutter stability, can be determined. Two different configurations of a large-diameter aeroengine labyrinth seal were studied. The first configuration is the initial design with four fins, which exhibited flutter instability during testing. The second configuration is a modified design with three fins and a stiffened ring. The steady-state flow was computed for both configurations, and good agreement was reached with available reference data. An aeroelasticity analysis was conducted next for both configurations, and the model was able to predict the observed flutter behavior in both cases. A flutter mechanism is proposed, based on the matching of the structural frequencies to the frequencies of waves traveling in the fluid, in the interfin cavities and in the high- and low-pressure cavities.

ABSTRACTThis paper presents a numerical study on turbulent vortex shedding flows past a square cylinder. The 2D unsteady periodic shedding motion was resolved in the calculation and the superimposed turbulent fluctuations were simulated with a second-order Reynolds-stress closure model. The calculations were carried out by solving numerically the fully elliptic ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the turbulence model equations together with the two-layer approach in the treatment of the near-wall region. The performance of the computations was evaluated by comparing the numerical results with data from available experiments. Results indicate that the present study gives good agreement in the shedding frequency and mean drag as well as in some phase profiles of the mean velocity.

The three-dimensional coupled explicit Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and the two equation shear-stress transport k-w (SST k-w) model has been employed to numerically simulate the cold flow field in a special-shaped cavity-based supersonic combustor. In a cross-section shaped rectangular, hypersonic inlet with airflow at Mach 2.0 chamber, shock structures and flow characteristics of a herringbone-shaped boss and a herringbone-shaped cavity models were discussed, respectively. The results indicate: Firstly, according to the similarities of bevel-cutting shock characteristics between the boss case and the cavity case, the boss structure can serve as an ideal alternative model for shear-layer. Secondly, the eddies within cavity are composed of herringbone-spanwise vortexes, columnar vortices in the front and main-spanwise vortexes in the rear, featuring tilting, twisting and stretching. Thirdly, the simulated bottom-flow of cavity is in good agreement with experimental result, while the reverse flow-entrainment resulting from herringbone geometry and pressure gradient. However, the herringbone-shaped cavity has a better performance in fuel-mixing.

Bottom hinged Oscillating Wave Surge Converters (OWSCs) are efficient devices for extracting power from ocean waves. There is limited knowledge about wave slamming on such devices. This paper deals with numerical studies of wave slamming on an oscillating flap to investigate the mechanism of slamming events. In our model, the Navier–Stokes equations are discretized using the Finite Volume method with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach for interface capturing. Waves are generated by a flap-type wave maker in the numerical wave tank, and the dynamic mesh method is applied to model the motion of the oscillating flap. Basic mesh and time step refinement studies are performed. The flow characteristics in a slamming event are analysed based on numerical results. Various simulations with different flap densities, water depths and wave amplitudes are performed for a better understanding of the slamming.

An unsteady, compressible, two-dimensional, thin shear layer Navier–Stokes solver is modified to predict the motion-dependent unsteady flow around oscillating airfoils in a cascade. A quasi-three-dimensional formulations is used to account for the stream-wise variation of streamtube height. The code uses Ni’s Lax–Wendroff algorithm in the outer region, an implicit ADI method in the inner region, conservative coupling at the interface, and the Baldwin–Lomax turbulence model. The computational mesh consists of an O-grid around each blade plus an unstructured outer grid of quadrilateral or triangular cells. The unstructured computational grid was adapted to the flow to better resolve shocks and wakes. Motion of each airfoil was simulated at each time step by stretching and compressing the mesh within the O-grid. This imposed motion consists of harmonic solid body translation in two directions and rotation, combined with the correct interblade phase angles. The validity of the code is illustrated by comparing its predictions to a number of test cases, including an axially oscillating flat plate in laminar flow, the Aeroelasticity of Turbomachines Symposium Fourth Standard Configuration (a transonic turbine cascade), and the Seventh Standard Configuration (a transonic compressor cascade). The overall comparison between the predictions and the test data is reasonably good. A numerical study on a generic transonic compressor rotor was performed in which the impact of varying the amplitude of the airfoil oscillation on the normalized predicted magnitude and phase of the unsteady pressure around the airfoil was studied. It was observed that for this transonic compressor, the nondimensional aerodynamic damping was influenced by the amplitude of the oscillation.

The purpose of this paper is to present a numerical study of flow fields for the NREL S805 and S809 airfoils using a spatially second-order symmetric total variational diminishing scheme. The steady two-dimensional flow is modeled as turbulent, viscous, and incompressible and is formulated in the pseudo-compressible form. The turbulent flow is closed by the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model. Numerical solutions are obtained by the implicit approximate-factorization method. The accuracy of the numerical results is compared with the Delft two-dimensional wind tunnel test data. For comparison, the Eppler code results are also included. Numerical solutions of pressure and lift coefficients show good agreement with the experimental data, but not the drag coefficients. To properly simulate the post-stall flow field, a better turbulence model should be used.

Abstract This paper presents an update of the model derived by Corral and Vega (2018, “Conceptual Flutter Analysis of Labyrinth Seal Using Analytical Models. Part I - Theoretical Support”, ASME J. of Turbomach., 140 (12), pp. 121006) for labyrinth seal flutter stability, providing a method of accounting for the effect of dissimilar gaps. The original CV model was intended as a conceptual model for understanding the effect of different geometric parameters on the seal stability comprehensively, providing qualitative trends for seal flutter stability. However, the quantitative evaluation of seal flutter, and the comparison of the CV model with detailed unsteady numerical simulations or experimental data, require including additional physics. The kinetic energy generated in the inlet gap is not dissipated entirely in the inter-fin cavity of straight-through labyrinth seals, and part is recovered in the downstream knife. This mechanism needs to be retained in the seal flutter model. It is concluded that when the theoretical gaps are identical, the impact of the recovery factor on the seal stability can be high. The sensitivity of the seal stability to large changes in the outlet to inlet gap ratio is high as well. It is concluded that fin variations due to rubbing or wearing inducing inlet gaps more open than the exit gaps lead to an additional loss of stability concerning the case of identical gaps. The agreement between the updated model and 3D linearized Navier-Stokes simulations is excellent when the model is informed with data coming from steady RANS simulations of the seal.

Non-contacting labyrinth seals are still the most common constructive elements used to minimize leakage losses in turbomachinery between areas with high pressure and areas with low pressure. Unfortunately, the leakage flow through the labyrinth seal generates forces which can have a great impact on the dynamics of the turborotor. Particularly in cases of instability, the turbomachinery is restricted in its power or rotating speed because of violent self-excited vibrations of the rotor. The occurrence of self-excited rotor vibrations due to lateral forces must definitely be excluded. To consider the labyrinth forces in Finite-Element prediction, a set of preferably exact dynamic coefficients is required. Numerical approaches used to calculate the coefficients are based on Navier-Stokes equations. A comparison with experimental data is essential for a validation of the calculation. The experimental identification is difficult, because of the littleness of the forces to be measured in gas seals. Especially the non-conservative coefficients, cross-coupled stiffness and direct damping, show a good agreement in both magnitude and trend depending on the entry swirl of the seal.

Abstract Turbine rim cavities require an adequate supply of cooling purge flow to prevent hot gas ingestion from overheating metal components beneath the gas path airfoils. Purge flow is typically introduced into rim cavities through a labyrinth seal at the inner diameter of the cavity, or through conduits in the metal walls of the rim cavity. This numerical study will focus on purge flow introduced through axial holes in the stationary side of a turbine realistic rim cavity. Three dimensional Unsteady Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes (URANS) CFD modeling is utilized to model of cavity sealing effectiveness as a function of axial purge flow rate. CFD modeling is compared with experimental data from the test turbine in the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START). Results show good agreement with experimental data, especially at lower purge flow rates. Analytical depictions of the flow field setup in the rim cavity are provided, explaining trends observed in experimental data. Differences in sealing effectiveness trends between the upper and lower portions of the rim cavity are predicted by CFD modeling, adding insight to ingestion phenomena in turbine realistic rim cavities with complex geometry and flow leakage paths.

The results of a numerical study of the viscous oscillating flow around a pair of circular cylinders are presented herein, for a constant frequency parameter, β, equal to 50, and Keulegan-Carpenter numbers, KC, ranging between 0.2 and 10. The cylinders were placed side-by-side to the oncoming flow, for a pitch to diameter ratio, P/D, equal to 2. The finite-element method was employed for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, in the formulation where the stream function and the vorticity are the field variables. The vorticity contours generated from the solution were used mainly for the flow visualization, whereas the stream-lines and isobars are shown in some cases. At low values of the Keulegan-Carpenter number the flow remains symmetrical with respect to the horizontal axis of symmetry of the solution domain. As the Keulegan-Carpenter number is increased asymmetries appear in the flow, which are eventually amplified and lead finally to more complicated vortex-shedding patterns. These asymmetries generate an aperiodic flow configuration at consecutive cycles, which becomes almost chaotic as KC grows larger. For the various Keulegan-Carpenter numbers examined the time-histories of the hydrodynamic forces are presented, and the r.m.s. values of the hydrodynamic forces and the coefficients of the in-line force were evaluated.

Two-dimensional numerical study of transient natural convection in an inclined cubic cavity filled with air using stream function-vorticity form for the Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out to explore the route toward chaos. The hot and cold vertical walls are maintained isothermal at temperature Tc and Th respectively and the other walls are adiabatic.  Two angles of inclination of the cavity 25° and 65° are considered. Transfers equations are solved using finite-difference discretization procedures. The study predicts various critical Rayleigh numbers for the two tilted angles characterizing the variation of the attractor behaviour and shows that the larger the Rayleigh number is, the more sensitive the attractor becomes to time step and meshes size. The routes toward the chaos followed by the attractor are: limit point / limit cycle / T2 torus / cycle fitted on a T2 torus / chaos / T2 torus / cycle fitted on a T2 torus / chaos when the Rayleigh number increases. The analysis confirms also the bifurcation of the attractor from a limit point to a limit cycle via an overcritical Hopf bifurcation for a Rayleigh number between 1.95x106 and 1.96x106.© 2013 JSR Publications.
