MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid due to a uniform stream passing over a thick, porous conducting flat plate subjected to a uniform suction at the plate under the influence of uniform transverse magnetic field has been studied taking into account the effect of Hall current. Induced magnetic field has been taken into consideration and exact solutions have been obtained for primary and secondary flows and induced magnetic field. Effects of different parameters have been illustrated using graphs. It has also been pointed out that when the magnetic Prandtl number is very small effects of Hall current, wall conductivity, and thickness of the plate are all negligible.

Abstract An unsteady flow formation in Couette motion of an electrically conducting fluid subject to transverse magnetic field has been analyzed in the presence of suction/injection through the porous plates when one of the porous plates is in ramped motion. It is assumed that the porous plates are uniformly permeable and the fluid is entering the flow region through one of the porous plates at same rate as it is leaving through the other porous plate. The resulting boundary value problem has been solved exactly under the assumption of a negligible induced magnetic field, external electric field and pressure gradient. Unified closed form expressions for the velocity field and skin-friction corresponding to the case of a magnetic field fixed relative to the fluid or to the moving porous plate have been presented. In order to highlight the impact of the ramp motion of the porous plate on the fluid flow, it has also been compared with Couette flow between porous plates when one of the porous plates has been set into an impulsive motion.

The unsteady MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid between two horizontal parallel non conducting plates, where the lower one is stretching sheet and the upper one is oscillating porous plate, is studied in the presence of a transverse magnetic field and the effects of Hall current. Fluid motion is caused by the stretching of the lower sheet and a constant suction is applied at the upper plate which is oscillating in its own plane. The stretching velocity of the sheet is assumed to be a linear function of distance along the channel. The expressions relating to the velocity distribution are obtained and effects of different values of various physical parameters are calculated numerically and shown graphically.

The paper investigates the magnetohydrodynamic flow of two immiscible, electrically conducting fluids between isothermal and insulated moving plates in the presence of an applied electric and inclined magnetic field with the effects of induced magnetic field. Partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer and magnetic field conservation are transformed to ordinary differential equations and solved exactly in both fluid regions, under physically appropriate boundary and interface conditions. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the non-dimensional velocity, non-dimensional induced magnetic field and nondimensional temperature. The analytical results for various values of the Hartmann number, the angle of magnetic field inclination, loading parameter and the ratio of plates? velocities are presented graphically to show their effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics.

An approximate solution to the problem of steady free convective MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically-conducting fluid over an infinite vertical isothermal porous plate with mass convection is presented here. A uniform magnetic field is assumed to be applied transversely to the direction of the flow, taking into account the induced magnetic field with viscous and magnetic dissipations of energy. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using the series solution method. The induced magnetic field, current density, temperature gradient and flow velocity are studied for magnetohydrodynamic body force, magnetic Prandtl number, Schmidt number and Eckert number. It is observed that the induced magnetic field is found to increase with a rise in magnetic Prandtl number. Current density is strongly reduced with increasing magnetic Prandtl number, but enhanced with Schmidt number. The acquired knowledge in our study can be used by designers to control MHD flow as suitable for a certain applications such as laminar magneto-aerodynamics, and MHD propulsion thermo-fluid dynamics.

Radiation effect on unsteady free convection flow of an electrically conducting, gray gas near equilibrium in the optically thin limit along an infinite vertical porous plate are investigated in the presence of strong transverse magnetic field imposed perpendicularly to the plate, taking Hall currents into account. A similarly parameter length scale (h), as a function of time and the suction velocity are considered to be inversely proportional to this parameter. Similarity equations are then derived and solved numerically using the shooting method. The numerical values of skin friction and the rate of heat transfer are represented in a table. The effects of radiation parameter, Hall parameter, and magnetic field parameters are discussed and shown graphically.

Abstract The paper discusses the boundary layer flow of a weak electrically conducting viscoelastic Walters’ liquid B over a nonlinearly stretching sheet subjected to an applied transverse magnetic field, when the liquid far away from the surface is at rest. The stretching is assumed to be a quadratic function of the coordinate along the direction of stretching. An analytical expression is obtained for the stream function and velocity components as a function of the viscoelastic parameter, the Chandrasekhar number and stretching related parameters. The results have possible technological applications in liquid based systems involving stretchable materials.

The objective of this investigation is to study the influence of thermal radiation and magnetic Prandtl number on the steady MHD heat and mass transfer by mixed convection flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically-conducting, Newtonian fluid which is an optically thin gray gas over a vertical porous plate taking into account the induced magnetic field. The similarity solutions of the transformed dimensionless governing equations are obtained by series solution. It is found that, velocity is reduced considerably with a rise in conduction-radiation parameter (R) or Hartmann number (M) whereas the skin friction is found to be markedly boosted with an increase in M or Magnetic Prandtl number (Pm). An increase in magnetic body parameter (M) or Magnetic Prandtl number (Pm) is found to escalate induced magnetic field whereas an increase in R is shown to exert the opposite effect. Applications of the study include laminar magneto-aerodynamics, materials processing and MHD propulsion thermo-fluid dynamics.DOI: 10.3329/jname.v7i2.5662

Unsteady hydromagnetic Couette flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid between two parallel porous plates taking Hall current into account in a rotating system is studied. Fluid flow within the channel is induced due to impulsive movement of the lower plate of the channel and is permeated by a uniform transverse magnetic field which is fixed relative to the moving plate. Solution of the governing equations is obtained by Laplace transform technique. The expression for the shear stress at the moving plate due to primary and secondary flows is also derived. Asymptotic behavior of the solution valid for small and large values of time t is analyzed to gain some physical insight into the flow pattern. Numerical values of primary and secondary velocities and that of shear stress at the moving plate due to primary and secondary flows are displayed graphically for various values of Hall current parameter m, rotation parameter K2, magnetic parameter M2, suction/injection parameter S and time t.

Abstract The unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid due to non-coaxial rotations of a porous disk subjected to a periodic suction and the fluid at infinity in the presence of applied transverse magnetic field has been studied. The fluid at infinity passes through a fixed point. The velocity field, shear stresses are obtained in a closed form.
