In this paper, the general solution of steady-state 2D nonaxisymmetric mechanical and thermal stresses and electrical and mechanical displacements of a hollow thick cylinder made of fluid-saturated functionally graded porous piezoelectric material (FGPPM) is presented. The general form of thermal and mechanical boundary conditions is considered on the inside and outside surfaces. A direct method is used to solve the heat conduction equation and the nonhomogenous system of partial differential Navier equations, using the complex Fourier series and the power law functions method. The material properties, except Poisson's ratio, are assumed to depend on the radial variable and they are expressed as power law functions along the radial direction.

In this paper, the general theoretical analysis of two-dimensional steady-state thermal stresses for a hollow thick cylinder made of functionally graded material is developed. The temperature distribution is assumed to be a function of radial and circumferential directions with general thermal and mechanical boundary conditions on the inside and outside surfaces. The material properties, except Poisson’s ratio, are assumed to depend on the variable r and they are expressed as power functions of r. The separation of variables and complex Fourier series are used to solve the heat conduction and Navier equations.

Abstract Thermal stresses of a functionally graded hollow thick cylinder due to non-uniform internal heat generation are studied in this paper. Analytical solutions are obtained with radially varying properties by using the theory of elasticity. Thermal stresses distribution for different values of the powers of the module of elasticity and varying power law index of heat generation are studied. The results have been computed numerically and illustrated graphically.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine the temperature distribution of a thin rectangular plate made of thermosensitive functionally graded (FG) material. By finding out thermal deflection and stress resultants, the thermal stresses have been obtained and analyzed.Design/methodology/approachInitially, the rectangular plate is kept at the surrounding temperature. The upper, lower and two parallel sides (y=0,bandz=0, c) are thermally insulated, while other parallel sides (x=0,a) are given convective-type heating, that is, the rate of change of the temperature of the rectangular plate is proportional to the difference between its own temperature and the surrounding temperature. The non-linear heat conduction equation has been converted to linear form by introducing Kirchhoff’s variable transformation and the resultant heat conduction equation is solved by integral transform technique with hyperbolic varying point heat source.FindingsA mathematical model is prepared for FG ceramic–metal-based material, in which alumina is selected as the ceramic and nickel as the metal. The thermal deflection and thermal stresses have been obtained for the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous materials. The results are illustrated numerically and depicted graphically for comparison. During this study, one observed that variations are seen in the stresses, due to the variation in the inhomogeneity parameters.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper is constructed purely on theoretical mathematical modeling by considering various parameters and functions.Practical implicationsThis type of theoretical analysis may be useful in high-temperature environments like nuclear components, spacecraft structural members, thermal barrier coatings, etc., as the effect of temperature and evaluation of temperature-dependent and nonhomogeneous material properties plays a vital role for accurate and reliable structural analysis.Originality/valueIn this paper, the authors have used thermal deflection and resultant stresses to determine the thermal stresses of a thin rectangular plate with temperature- and spatial variable-dependent material properties which is a new and novel contribution to the field.

AbstractInitial observations of the influence of pore structure on material properties of cement paste are described. The total porosity is held constant and pore structure is altered by use of a superplasticizer. Corresponding changes in strength and fracture energy are observed. Changes in the cement paste pore structure are evaluated by analysis of images obtained by optical microscopy. The technique is a direct method of measurement that avoids assumptions about pore geometry.

This paper presents analytical solutions of the thermal stresses in a functionally graded solid cylinder with fixed ends in elastic region. These thermal stresses are due to the uniform heat generation inside the cylinder. Material properties of the functionally graded (FG) cylinder vary radially according to a parabolic form. The material properties are assumed to be independent of the temperature which are yield strength, elasticity modulus, thermal conduction coefficient, thermal expansion coefficient and Poisson’s ratio. The solutions for the thermal stresses are valid for both homogeneous and functionally graded materials.

In the present paper, thermomechanical vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) Reddy beams made of porous material subjected to various thermal loadings are investigated by utilizing a Navier solution method for the first time. Four types of thermal loadings, namely, uniform, linear, nonlinear, and sinusoidal temperature rises, through the thickness direction are considered. Thermomechanical material properties of FG beam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and supposed to vary through thickness direction of the constituents according to power-law distribution (P-FGM) which is modified to approximate the porous material properties with even and uneven distributions of porosities phases. The governing differential equations of motion are derived based on higher order shear deformation beam theory. Hamilton’s principle is applied to obtain the governing differential equations of motion which are solved by employing an analytical technique called the Navier type solution method. Influences of several important parameters such as power-law exponents, porosity distributions, porosity volume fractions, thermal effects, and slenderness ratios on natural frequencies of the temperature-dependent FG beams with porosities are investigated and discussed in detail. It is concluded that these effects play significant role in the thermodynamic behavior of porous FG beams.

The analytical solutions of the first-order shear deformation theory are developed to study the buckling behaviour of functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shells under three types of mechanical loads. The Poisson's ratios of the FG cylindrical shells are assumed to be constant, while the Young's moduli vary continuously throughout the thickness direction according to the volume fraction of constituents given by power-law or exponential function. The stability equations are employed to obtain the closed-form solutions for critical buckling loads of each loading case. The dependence of the critical buckling loads on the variations of the material properties with a power-law or exponential function is studied. It is observed that these effects change appreciably the critical buckling loads. Results for critical loads are tabulated for thin and moderately thick shells. Although the critical buckling load of FG cylindrical shells decreases as the circumferential wave numbers increase, it rises for axially compressed long shells as the longitudinal wave numbers increase.
