Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Flow Field and Side-Wall Heat Transfer in Rectangular Rib-Roughened Passages

In order to achieve higher thermal efficiency and power output, the gas turbine inlet temperature of gas turbine engine is continuously increased. However, the increasing temperature may exceed the melting point of the blade material. Rib turbulators are often used in the midsection of internal cooling ducts to augment the heat transfer from blade wall to the coolant. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate side-wall heat transfer of a rectangular passage with the leading/trailing walls being roughened by continuous or truncated ribs. The inlet Reynolds number is ranging from 12,000 to 60,000. The detailed three dimensional (3D) fluid flow and heat transfer over the side-wall are presented. The overall performances of ribbed passages are compared. It is suggested that the usage of truncated ribs is a suitable way to augment the side-wall heat transfer and improve the flow structure near the leading edge especially under the critical limitation of pressure drop.

Abstract The gas turbine engine's extreme conditions need a robust design to produce efficient energy and reliable operation. Flow and thermal analysis are essential for complex aerodynamic and thermodynamic interaction during turbine performance. There is a need to understand and predict the temperature to make the gas turbine engine efficient. This paper will outline the numerical methods applied for primary cooling methods in gas turbine blades. These include impinging leading-edge cooling, internal cooling in the midsection, and pin fin in the trailing edge. The main objective of this paper is to understand the numerical research done on improving gas turbine cooling. The emphasis will be on understanding the present CFD (Computational fluid dynamics) techniques applied for gas turbine cooling and further development. This paper briefly outlines the new conjugate heat transfer based CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modeling techniques that have evolved over the years due to recent computing power development.

A problem involved in the increase of the turbine inlet temperature of gas turbine engine is the failure of material because of excessive thermal stresses. This requires cooling methods to withstand the increase of the inlet temperature. Rib turbulators are often used in the mid-section of internal cooling ducts to augment the heat transfer from blade wall to the coolant. This study numerically investigates side-wall heat transfer of a rectangular passage with the leading/trailing walls being roughened by staggered ribs whose length is less than the passage width. Such a passage corresponds to the internal cooling passage near the leading edge of a turbine blade. The inlet Reynolds number is ranging from 12,000 to 60,000. The detailed 3D fluid flow and heat transfer over the side-wall are presented. The overall performances of several ribbed passages are evaluated and compared. It is found that the side-wall heat transfer coefficients of the passage with truncated (continuous) ribs on opposite walls are about 20%–27% (28%–43%) higher than those of a passage without ribs, while the pressure loss could be reduced compared to a passage with continuous ribs. It is suggested that the usage of truncated ribs is a suitable way to augment the side-wall heat transfer and improve the flow structure near the leading edge.

A new arrangement of side-wall burners of an industrial furnace was studied by three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. This simulation was conducted on ten calculation domain. Finite rate/eddy dissipation model was used as a combustion model. Discrete ordinate model (DOM) was considered as radiation model. Furthermore, weighted sum of gray gas model (WSGGM) was used to calculate radiative gas properties. Tube skin temperature and heat flux profiles were obtained by solving mass, momentum, and energy equations. Moreover, fuel rate variation was considered as an effective parameter. A base flow rate of fuel (m˙=0.0695kg/s) was assigned and different ratios (0.25 m˙, 0.5 m˙, 2 m˙, and 4 m˙) were assigned to investigate the heat distribution over the furnace. Resulted temperature and heat profiles were obtained in nonuniform mode using the proposed wall burner arrangement. According to the results, despite increased heat transfer coefficient of about 34% for m˙–4 m˙, temperature profile for this rate is too high and is harmful for tube metallurgy. Also, the proper range for fuel rate variation was determined as 0.5–2 m˙. In this range, heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number for m˙–2 m˙ were increased by 21% and for m˙–0.25 m˙ were decreased by about 28%.

Abstract Reynolds based thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) simulations of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) generally provide accurate results; however, the uncertainty of the pad’s leading edge thermal boundary conditions causes uncertainty of the results. The highly complex thermal-flow mixing action between pads (BPs) results from the oil supply nozzle jets and geometric features. The conventional Reynolds approach employs mixing coefficients (MCs), estimated from experience, to approximate a uniform inlet temperature for each pad. Part I utilized complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow modeling to illustrate that temperature distributions at the pad inlets may deviate strongly from being uniform. The present work retains the uniform MC model but obtains the MC from detailed three-dimensional CFD modeling and machine learning, which could be extended to the radially and axially varying MC case. The steps for implementing an artificial neural network (ANN) approach for MC regression are provided as follows: (1) utilize a design of experiment step for obtaining an adaptable training set, (2) conduct CFD simulations on the BP to obtain the outputs of the training set, (3) apply an ANN learning process by Levenverg–Mardquart backpropagation with the Bayesian regularization, and (4) couple the ANN MC results with conventional TEHD Reynolds models. An approximate log fitting method provides a simplified approach for MC regression. The effectiveness of the Reynolds TEHD TPJB model with ANN regression-based MC distributions is confirmed by comparison with CFD based TEHD TPJB model results. The method obtains an accuracy nearly the same as the complete CFD model, but with the computational economy of a Reynolds approach.

Abstract Gas Turbine blade cooling is an important topic of research, as a high turbine inlet temperature (TIT) essentially means an increase in efficiency of gas turbine cycles. Internal cooling channels in gas turbine blades are key to the cooling and prevention of thermal failure of the material. Serpentine channels are a common feature in internal blade cooling. Optimization methods are often employed in the design of blade internal cooling channels to improve heat-transfer and reduce pressure drop. Topology optimization uses a variable porosity approach to manipulate flow geometries by adding or removing material. Such a method has been employed in the current work to modify the geometric configuration of a serpentine channel to improve total heat transferred and reduce the pressure drop. An in-house OpenFOAM solver has been used to create non-traditional geometries from two generic designs. Geometry-1 is a 2-D serpentine passage with an inlet and 4 bleeding holes as outlets for ejection into the trailing edge. Geometry-2 is a 3-D serpentine passage with an aspect ratio of 3:1 and consists of two 180-degree bends. The inlet velocity for both the geometries was used as 20 m/s. The governing equations employ a “Brinkman porosity parameter” to account for the porous cells in the flow domain. Results have shown a change in shape of the channel walls to enhance heat-transfer in the passage. Additive manufacturing can be employed to make such unconventional shapes.

Recently, the number of gas turbine combined cycle plants is rapidly increasing in substitution of nuclear power plants. The turbine inlet temperature (TIT) is being constantly increased in order to achieve higher efficiency. Therefore, the improvement of the cooling technology for high temperature gas turbine blades is one of the most important issue to be solved. In a gas turbine, the main flow impinging at the leading edge of the turbine blade generates a so called horseshoe vortex by the interaction of its boundary layer and generated pressure gradient at the leading edge. The pressure surface leg of this horseshoe vortex crosses the passage and reaches the blade suction surface, driven by the pressure gradient existing between two consecutive blades. In addition, this pressure gradient generates a crossflow along the endwall. This all results into a very complex flow field in proximity of the endwall. For this reason, burnouts tend to occur at a specific position in the vicinity of the leading edge. In this research, a methodology to cool the endwall of the turbine blade by means of film cooling jets from the blade surface is proposed. The cooling performance and heat transfer coefficient distribution is investigated using the transient thermography method. CFD analysis is also conducted to know the phenomena occurring at the end wall and calculate the heat transfer distribution.

The solution for dynamic modeling of reheating furnaces requires a burner model, which is simultaneously accurate and fast. Based on the fact that radiative heat transfer is the most dominant heat transfer mode in high-temperature processes, the present study develops a simplified flame representation model that can be used for dynamic simulation of heat transfer in reheating furnaces. The first part of the paper investigates, experimentally and computationally, gas combustion in an industrial burner. Experiments aim at establishing an experimental database of the burner characteristics. This database is compared with numerical simulations in order to establish a numerical model for the burner. The numerical burner model was solved using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software (FLUENT 6.3.26). A selection of results is presented, highlighting the usefulness of CFD as a modeling tool for industrial scale burners. In the second part of the paper, a new approach called the “emissive volume approach” is established. This approach consists of replacing the burner flame by a number of emissive volumes that replicates the radiative effect of the flame. Comparisons with CFD results show a difference smaller than 1% is achieved with the emissive volume approach, while computational time is divided by 40.

Increasing turbine inlet temperature is one of the main strategies used to accomplish the demands of increased performance of modern gas turbines. As a consequence, optimization of the cooling system is of paramount importance in gas turbine development. Leading edge represents a critical part of cooled nozzles and blades, given the presence of the hot gases stagnation point and the unfavourable geometry for cooling. This paper reports the results of a numerical investigation aimed at assessing the rotation effects on the heat transfer distribution in a realistic leading edge internal cooling system of a high pressure gas turbine blade. The numerical investigation was carried out in order to support and to allow an in-depth understanding of the results obtained in a parallel experimental campaign. The model is composed of a trapezoidal feeding channel which provides air to the cold bridge system by means of three large racetrack-shaped holes, generating coolant impingement on the internal concave leading edge surface, whereas four big fins assure the jets confinement. Air is then extracted through 4 rows of 6 holes reproducing the external cooling system composed of shower-head and film cooling holes. Experiments were performed in static and rotating conditions replicating the typical range of jet Reynolds number (Rej) from 10000 to 40000 and Rotation number (Roj) up to 0.05, for three crossflow cases representative of the working condition that can be found at blade tip, midspan and hub, respectively. Experimental results in terms of flow field measurements on several internal planes and heat transfer coefficient on the LE internal surface have been performed on two analogous experimental campaigns at University of Udine and University of Florence respectively. Hybrid RANS-LES models were used for the simulations, such as Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), given their ability to resolve the complex flow field associated with jet impingement. Numerical flow field results are reported in terms of both jet velocity profiles and 2D vector plots on symmetry and transversal internal planes, while the heat transfer coefficient distributions are presented as detailed 2D maps together with radial and tangential averaged Nusselt number profiles. A fairly good agreement with experimental measurements is observed, which represent a validation of the adopted computational model. As a consequence, the computed aerodynamic and thermal fields also allow an in-depth interpretation of the experimental results.

Internal convective cooling of gas-turbine airfoil is essential because turbine inlet temperature becomes higher for pursuing higher thermal efficiency. For higher cooling performance, heat transfer is often enhanced by installing ribs and/or pin-fins in the internal passage. In this study, in order to enhance heat transfer, the combination of spherical dimples, cylindrical protrusions, and transverse square ribs was applied to one wall of a narrow passage. As for the cylindrical protrusions, two different diameter cases were examined. The heat transfer enhancement was measured by a transient infrared thermography method for the Reynolds number of 2,000, 6,000, and 10,000. The pressure loss was also measured in the experiments, and RANS simulation was performed to give a rationale for the experimental results. The present results clearly showed the spatial variation of the local Nusselt number: the high Nusselt number was observed on the rib top-surface and also near the leading edge on the protrusion top-surface. In addition, the areas around the dimple’s trailing-edge on the oblique line connecting the neighbor dimples showed moderately enhanced heat transfer. When two different protrusion-diameter cases were compared, both the mean Nusselt number and the friction factor were similarly higher in the larger protrusion case than the smaller protrusion case, and therefore the larger protrusion case was more effective in cooling even when the pressure loss was taken into account.
