This paper discusses how to determine the arrangement of compressors in a two-unit gas pipeline station where there is no standby unit. The compressors are driven by variable speed drivers such as gas turbines or variable frequency electric motors. Both series and parallel arrangements are analyzed in a transient simulation mode to determine which operation mode is more advantageous. Among the assumptions in this paper are the performance characteristics of the compressor. It will be outlined how these performance characteristics influence the conclusions.

The experience of using variable speed drives at the pumping stations operated by Vodokanal LLC in Novokuznetsk is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of this technical device are specified. It is demonstrated that currently, the use of variable speed drives provides for reducing the energy consumption by more than 20, reducing the repair and maintenance costs for improving the service life of electric motors for reducing inrush current, water leaks and the load on the pumping equipment and pipeline valving. The use of variable speed drives has paid off even in case where adjusting the parameters to ensure the technology (velocity, performance, etc.) bringing the equipment parameters to the required values without replacing it (in order to increase the equipment load to the nominal value for the subsequent period) compensating for daily irregularities in water consumption are required.

Gas pipeline projects are capital intensive and normally are developed under scenarios of uncertainty. Such uncertainties vary from closing take-or-pay, ship-or-pay or delivery-or-pay agreements to those uncertainties related to the acquisition of equipments, material and construction and assembling contracts. Natural gas compression service contracts with compressor station using gas motors and reciprocating compressors have been widely adopted at PETROBRAS as economically feasible against holding the stations as part of the pipeline asset as well as providing an effective approach to mitigate risks inherent to the gas business and associated to the compressor stations. Although compression service contracts with turbo compressors (gas turbine drivers and centrifugal compressors) have not yet been accomplished at PETROBRAS for gas pipeline projects, studies and preliminaries discussions shows that, taken into consideration certain relevant aspects, they will also present great opportunity to be adopted and will generate the same advantages already perceived for the compression service contracts with stations that uses gas motor drivers and reciprocation compressors. This paper has the objective of presenting an economic approach and a business model addressing the main points that must be considered while doing feasibility analysis between the alternatives of holding property of the compression station asset against the opportunity of having a compression service contract as operating cost for the project. Questions such as how to address depreciation, overhaul costs and tailor made equipment, such as centrifugal compressors, are raised and answered.

Industrial gas turbines operate over a wide range of combinations of loads and speeds. The fuel control valve must be designed to cover the entire range precisely. The design of an electrically operated fuel control valve is described and comparison between the predicted and measured performance characteristics is shown.

By means of experiment, the author analyzed the operation performance of the capillary radiant air-conditioning terminal integrated with DC variable speed new air unit. The results show that the operation mode that the capillary radiant air-conditioning terminal running combined with DC variable speed new air unit not only avoid the disadvantages of the capillary radiant air-conditioning such as temperature dropping slowly, condensation of moisture under hot and humid conditions during the cooling season, but also effectively overcome the problem that the cooling ability of the radiation surface is low caused by avoiding condensation, and the system can also take the moisture load indoor away as well as achieve the purpose of dehumidification. Besides, using the heat storage capacity of the capillary radiant air-conditioning terminal, controlling water- system of capillary radiant air-conditioning terminal to open and close appropriately can achieve the goal of energy saving.

This article discusses the importance of gas turbines, centrifugal compressors and pumps, and other turbomachines in processes that bring natural gas to the end users. To be useful, the natural gas coming from a large number of small wells has to be gathered. This process requires compression of the gas in several stages, before it is processed in a gas plant, where contaminants and heavier hydrocarbons are stripped from the gas. From the gas plant, the gas is recompressed and fed into a pipeline. In all these compression processes, centrifugal gas compressors driven by industrial gas turbines or electric motors play an important role. Turbomachines are used in a variety of applications for the production of oil and associated gas. For example, gas turbine generator sets often provide electrical power for offshore platforms or remote oil and gas fields. Offshore platforms have a large electrical demand, often requiring multiple large gas turbine generator sets. Similarly, centrifugal gas compressors, driven by gas turbines or by electric motors are the benchmark products to pump gas through pipelines, anywhere in the world.

Software for monitoring and evaluating the performance of gas turbines is being developed under the auspices of Gas Research Institute (GRI). Reference [1] provides an overview of the GRI project. This paper describes the PEGASUS software and monitoring system. PEGASUS is an acronym for Performance Evaluation of GAS Users Systems. Field test results, on multi-shaft turbines used in the gas pipeline industry, have demonstrated the potential of the software. The software and instrumentation, can help identify maintenance and upgrade actions to improve performance.

Low Frequency Noise at Gas Turbines A natural gas compressor station that was equipped with Hispano Suiza Turbines THM 1202 emitted high intensity noise between 20 Hz and 40 Hz, causing window vibrations and standing waves within the living rooms of a nearby residential area. Since additional sound attenuation by increasing the volume of the exhaust silencers was impossible, further investigations were carried out to explain the mechanism of this low frequency noise emission. By changing the flame pattern inside the combustion chambers of the turbines it was possible to achieve a remarkable reduction at 31.5 Hz amounting to 15 dB. The investigation procedure leading to the final results will be the subject of this presentation.
