Abstract A new rotor control scheme, the isotropic control of anisotropic rotor bearing system in complex state space, is proposed, which utilizes the concepts on the eigenstructure of the isotropic rotor system. Then the control scheme is applied to an active magnetic bearing system and the control performance is investigated in relation to control energy, transient response, and unbalance response. In particular, it is shown that the proposed method is efficient for control of unbalance response.

As a new rotor control scheme, isotropic control of weakly anisotropic rotor bearing system in complex state space is proposed, which utilizes the concepts on the eigenstructure of the isotropic rotor system. Advantages of the scheme are that the controlled system always retains isotropic eigenstructure, leading to circular whirling due to unbalance and that it is efficient for control of unbalance response. And the system analysis and controller design becomes simple and yet comprehensive since the order of the matrices treated in the complex domain approach is half of that in the real approach. The control scheme is applied to a rigid rotor-active magnetic bearing system which is digitally controlled and the control performance is investigated experimentally in relation to unbalance response and control energy. It is found that the isotropic optimal control method, which essentially eliminates the backward unbalance response component, is more efficient than the conventional optimal control in that it gives smaller major whirl radius and yet it often requires less control effort.

Purpose The active magnetic bearing is highly nonlinear and unstable system. In general most of physical systems, conventional PID control strategies are employed for their stable operation but the dynamics of the system are influenced by input voltage saturation that degrades the performance of the system. The conventional PID control scheme does not work properly alone. In such a situation, PID faces windup phenomenon that leads to instability in the system. To overcome this problem, an anti-windup control scheme leads to stable and smooth operation of active magnetic bearing system. Design/methodology/approach The proposed anti-windup control strategy is based on dynamic output feedback that is applied on linearized active magnetic bearing (AMB) system to stabilize and avoid the input voltage saturation effect in the actuator. Findings An anti-windup controller is designed for active magnetic bearing system in presence of input voltage saturation. The stability of AMB system with anti-windup controller is derived in sense of Lyapunov and expressed as linear matrix inequality problem for AMB system and the designed anti-windup controller also enlarges the region of attraction of considered AMB system. Originality/value T-S fuzzy technique is used for obtaining local linear model of nonlinear active magnetic bearing system for easy and simple implementation of anti-windup control scheme. In proposed methodology the region of attraction for anti-windup compensator is also discussed. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by the numerical simulation results for considered active magnetic bearing system and domain of attraction or stability region of closed loop AMB system are also calculated using Eigen Value Optimization technique for both the cases such as with and without anti-windup controller. The comparative result and the contribution of proposed control strategy are also discussed.

Abstract The present work investigates the online vibration control of a cracked rotor-bearing system incorporated with AMB. A fatigue crack, which exhibits the opening and closure behavior of cracked faces while rotation, is introduced artificially in the shaft to understand the dynamic behavior of a cracked rotor system. For this, three-point bending tests were performed to obtain edge transverse crack in the shaft. An eight-pole electromagnetic actuator was used to apply control forces directly on to the shaft in the radial direction. The radial force was used to assist vibration suppression in the rotor. In order to achieve active control to mechanical vibration and other disturbances, a simple PID control strategy is used. Closed loop tests are conducted on the d-SPACE DS1202 platform using the differential driving mode of the PID controller to suppress the vibration of a shaft containing a transverse crack integrated with an AMB supported on two conventional bearings. The comparison of the dynamic behavior of the laboratory test rig with and without active magnetic bearing (AMB) with the numerically simulated data is analyzed. The vibration suppression is found to be achieved satisfactorily in the presence of the unbalance force, bow force, crack force, and with other forces on the rotor-bearing system.

Purpose This paper aims to present bifurcation analysis of a magnetically supported coaxial rotor model in auxiliary bearings, which includes gyroscopic moments of disks and geometric coupling of the magnetic actuators. Design/methodology/approach Ten nonlinear equations of motion were solved using the Runge–Kutta method. The vibration responses were analyzed using dynamic trajectories, power spectra, Poincaré maps, bifurcation diagrams and the maximum Lyapunov exponent. The analysis was carried out for different system parameters, namely, the inner shaft stiffness, inter-rotor bearing stiffness, auxiliary bearing stiffness and disk position. Findings It was shown that dynamics of the system could be significantly affected by varying these parameters, so that the system responses displayed a rich variety of nonlinear dynamical phenomena, including quasi-periodicity, chaos and jump. Next, some threshold values were provided with regard to the design of appropriate parameters for this system. Therefore, the proposed work can provide an effective means of gaining insights into the nonlinear dynamics of coaxial rotor–active magnetic bearing systems with auxiliary bearings in the future. Originality/value This paper considered the influences of the inner shaft stiffness, inter-rotor bearing stiffness, auxiliary bearing stiffness and disk position on the bifurcation behavior of a magnetically supported coaxial rotor system in auxiliary bearings.

Nowadays, the search for increasing performances in turbomachinery applications has led to a growing utilization of active magnetic bearings (AMBs), which can bring a series of advantages thanks to their features: AMBs allow the machine components to reach higher peripheral speeds; in fact there are no wear and lubrication problems as the contact between bearing surfaces is absent. Furthermore, AMBs characteristic parameters can be controlled via software, optimizing machine dynamics performances. However, active magnetic bearings present some peculiarities, as they have lower load capacity than the most commonly used rolling and hydrodynamic bearings, and they need an energy source; for these reasons, in case of AMBs overload or breakdown, an auxiliary bearing system is required to support the rotor during such landing events. During the turbomachine design process, it is fundamental to appropriately choose the auxiliary bearing type and characteristics, because such components have to resist to the rotor impact; so, a supporting design tool based on accurate and efficient models of auxiliary bearings is very useful for the design integration of the Active Magnetic Bearing System into the machine. This paper presents an innovative model to accurately describe the mechanical behavior of a complete rotor-dynamic system composed of a rotor equipped with two auxiliary rolling bearings. The model, developed and experimentally validated in collaboration with Baker Hughes a GE company (providing the test case and the experimental data), is able to reproduce the key physical phenomena experimentally observed; in particular, the most critical phenomenon noted during repeated experimental combined landing tests is the rotor forward whirl, which occurs in case of high friction conditions and greatly influences the whole system behavior. In order to carefully study some special phenomena like rotor coast down on landing bearings (which requires long period of time to evolve and involves many bodies and degrees of freedom) or other particular events like impacts (which occur in a short period of time), a compromise between accuracy of the results and numerical efficiency has been pursued. Some of the elements of the proposed model have been previously introduced in literature; however the present work proposes some new features of interest. For example, the lateral and the axial models have been properly coupled in order to correctly reproduce the effects observed during the experimental tests and a very important system element, the landing bearing compliant suspension, has been properly modelled to more accurately describe its elastic and damping effects on the system. Furthermore, the model is also useful to characterize the frequencies related to the rotor forward whirl motion.
