Dynamic performance is of great importance to compliant mechanisms which are employed in dynamic applications, especially if the dynamic problems in DOC (degree of constraint) directions are to be met. An investigation on the dynamic characteristics of a 2R compliant mechanism is presented. Based on the substructure techniques, the in-plane dynamic model of the preceding compliant mechanisms is developed. The natural frequencies and sensitivities are then analyzed. The numerical result verifies the validity of the proposed method. Finally, optimal design of compliant mechanism is investigated.

In order to investigate dynamic performance of flexible multi-link manipulators more exactly, establishing the dynamic model with accounting for link foreshortening and link material damping is needed. In this paper, a new dynamic model for planar flexible multi-link manipulators is established by using Lagrange approach. Both link foreshortening and link material damping are accounted for in this model. As a case simulation, this model is applied to a planar flexible two-link manipulator with a tip mass, and the motion responses of the manipulator are obtained using Gear method.

An intensive study on the dynamic modeling and analysis of compliant mechanisms is presented in this paper based on the pseudo-rigid-body model. The pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model with single degree-of-freedom is proposed at first and the dynamic equation of the 1R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model for a flexural beam is presented briefly. The pseudo-rigid-body dynamic models with multi-degrees-of-freedom are then derived in detail. The dynamic equations of the 2R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model and 3R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model for the flexural beams are obtained using Lagrange equation. Numerical investigations on the natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the three pseudo-rigid-body dynamic models are made. The effectiveness and superiority of the pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model has been shown by comparing with the finite element analysis method. An example of a compliant parallel-guiding mechanism is presented to investigate the dynamic behavior of the mechanism using the 2R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model.

Compliant mechanisms gain at least some of their mobility from the deflection of flexible members rather than from movable joints only. Dynamic effects are very important to improving the design of compliant mechanisms. An investigation on the dynamics and synthesis of the compliant mechanisms is presented. The dynamic model of compliant mechanisms is developed at first. The natural frequency and sensitivity are then studied based on the dynamic model. Finally, optimal design of compliant mechanism is investigated. The experimental study of natural frequency is performed. The comparison between the experiment results and the theoretical results verifies the validity of the experiment system and theoretical model.

Based on the principle of dynamic equivalence, a new dynamic model of compliant mechanisms is developed using the pseudo-rigid-body model. The dynamic equation of general planar compliant mechanisms is derived. The natural frequency of a compliant mechanism is obtained in the example of a planar compliant parallel-guiding mechanism. The numerical results show the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed method compared with the methods of FEA and flexible mechanisms.

The conventional mechanisms transmitted force and displacement through rigid members (high stiffness) and traditional joints (with high softness), where recently, researchers have come up with new systems called compliant mechanisms that transfer power and mobility through the deformation of their flexible members. One of the most frequently used approaches for designing compliant mechanisms is topology optimization. Extracting the optimal design of a displacement amplifying compliant mechanism using the modified Invasive Weed Optimization (MIWO) method is the current study's main novelty. The studied mechanism is a compliant micro-mechanism that can be used as a micrometric displacement amplifier. The goal of this synthesis is to maximize the output-to-input displacement ratio. In this research, a new random step is added to the Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) method; the new seeds can be spread farther from their parents, which can be improved the algorithm's abilities. The results show that the use of the modified IWO algorithm for this problem has led to a significant improvement over the results from similar articles.

Dynamic modeling and frequency characteristic analysis of a novel 3-PSS (three-prismatic-spherical-spherical) flexible parallel micro-manipulator with three translational DOF in space were investigated in this paper. Firstly, the kinematics analysis was developed based on the pseudo-rigid body model. The Jacobian matrix and the relationship between the micro angular deformation of the flexible spherical hinge and the end pose of mobile platform were respectively obtained by employing vector closed-loop method and coordinate transformation method. Then, taking into account the elastic strain energy of the flexible spherical hinge, dynamic model of this mechanism was established via Lagrange equations, and the expression of natural frequency was further derived. Combined with a set of given parameters, natural frequencies of the system were calculated by using MATLAB software. For the comparison purpose, a simulated modal analysis of the mechanism with the same parameters was also performed by employing finite element ANSYS software. Results from numerical calculation and finite element simulation indicated that maximum error of their natural frequencies was 2.71%, which verified the correctness of the theoretical dynamic model. Finally, variations of natural frequencies with changes of the basic parameters were analyzed. Analysis results show that natural frequencies increase with the increase of the bending stiffness kbm of flexible spherical hinge and the difference in radius Er between static platform and mobile platform, while decrease with the increase of the length l of the link rod and the masses of the main components of mechanism. Besides, it can be further drawn from these obtained results that the natural frequencies increase with the increase of the angle θl between the link rod and the z axis of reference coordinate system. Considering that the increase of the stiffness kbm and the angle θl will reduce the scope of working space, it is recommended in designing the structure to choose a set of larger stiffness kbm and angle θl as much as possible under the premise of satisfying the working space.

In general, compliant mechanisms are single-state devices, meaning there is a one-to-one relationship between the inputs (actuation) and outputs (mechanism motion). This is particularly troublesome in precision mechanisms which offer limited flexibility in performance characteristics for high cost. In this paper we demonstrate a method which was proposed in earlier work (2002) to make a six-axis compliant mechanism with reconfigurable performance characteristics. The mechanism was synthesized using CoMeT, a compliant mechanism design tool, and optimized via FEA simulation. Experimental results show that (1) mechanism transmission ratio can be reconfigured between negative and positive numbers (2) that dynamic mode shapes may be changed and (3) that natural frequencies may be independently reconfigured. A means to handle the competing material requirements of large range and high-bandwidth is briefly presented.
