ARX Model of a Residential Heating System With Backpropagation Parameter Estimation Algorithm

Model predictive control (MPC) strategies hold great potential for improving the performance and energy efficiency of building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. A challenge in the deployment of such predictive thermo-static control systems is the need to learn accurate models for the thermal characteristics of individual buildings. This necessitates the development of online and data-driven methods for system identification. In this paper, we propose an autoregressive with exogenous terms (ARX) model of a thermal zone within a building. To learn the model, we present a backpropagation approach for recursively estimating the parameters. Finally, we fit the linear model to data collected from a residential building with a forced-air heating and ventilation system and validate the accuracy of the trained model.

The application of the heat recovery- system with the combined use of the recycled heat of the municipal boiler plants is substantiated. The thermal characteristics of the system and the levels of increase in the efficiency of the boiler with a rational ratio of the areas of heat exchange surfaces of water- and air-heating equipment of this system for different regions of Ukraine are determined.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To verify the correlation between temperature measurements performed using an infrared tympanic thermometer and an esophageal thermometer during the intraoperative period. METHOD A longitudinal study of repeated measures was performed including subjects aged 18 years or older undergoing elective oncologic surgery of the digestive system, with anesthesia duration of at least 1 hour. Temperature measurements were performed simultaneously by a calibrated esophageal thermometer and by a calibrated infrared tympanic thermometer, with laboratory reading precision of ±0.2ºC. The operating room temperature remained between 19 and 21ºC. RESULTS The study included 51 patients, mostly men (51%), white (80.4%). All patients were kept warm by a forced-air heating system, for an average of 264.14 minutes (SD = 87.7). The two temperature measurements showed no different behavior over time (p = 0.2205), however, tympanic measurements were consistently 1.24°C lower (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION The tympanic thermometer presented reliable results but reflected lower temperatures than the esophageal thermometer.

The parameter estimation problem of the ARX model is studied in this paper. First, some traditional identification algorithms are briefly introduced, and then a new parameter estimation algorithm—the modified momentum gradient descent algorithm—is developed. Two gradient directions with their corresponding step sizes are derived in each iteration. Compared with the traditional parameter identification algorithms, the modified momentum gradient descent algorithm has a faster convergence rate. A simulation example shows that the proposed algorithm is effective.

The Republic of Korea held the Winter Olympics in February 2018 and built several indoor ice rinks. Recently, the population of viewing and enjoying winter sports in indoor ice rink arenas is increasing and it is expected that the demand for building new indoor ice rink arenas will increase in the future. These indoor ice rinks generally should have an adequate dehumidification and heating system to provide optimal indoor air condition for users (spectators and athletes) under the required heat and humidity conditions. In addition, HVAC system designers should take steps to prevent fogging from condensation on the ice surface and to prevent condensation on the walls. This study was carried out to evaluate the formation of fog near the ice surface by using two air distribution systems applicable to the indoor ice rink arena. It was confirmed that the mixed ventilation method did not cause fog near ice surface, and that there is a great difference in the composition of the indoor thermal environment of the ice rink arena according to the type of ventilation system.

The paper presents results of heating energy consumption measurements in two pairs of buildings in community New Belgrade for two heating seasons. Influence of these measurements on energy savings is also presented. The measurements were carried out during heating seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04 in buildings in Block 34 and 63, connected to the district heating system "Beogradske elektrane". The buildings in each pair have similar architectural and thermal characteristics. One of the buildings in a pair was "test" building and the other "control" one. In the "test" building the energy consumption for heating of each apartment was measured, as well as total energy consumption for the whole building in the substation. Occupants were able to regulate the heating system. In the "control" building the energy consumption was measured only for the whole building, and occupants had almost no impact on heating energy consumption. The comparison of energy consumption for heating in the "test" and "control" buildings is given in the paper, as well as analysis of the influence of energy consumption measurements on the achieved energy savings. .
