In this paper a numerical model is used to investigate the effect of the elasticity of the bearing in the pressure distribution in the lubricant and the stress distribution in the bearing. The lubricant film, as well as a bearing, including the lining and the backing of the insert, and the housing, are modeled using the general-purpose ANSYS®5.7 commercial Finite Element program. Results have been obtained for the pressure, radial displacement, hoop and von Mises stress distributions at the surface of the bearing, as well as for the shear stress distribution at the interface between the lining and the backing. A number of conclusions have been drawn regarding the relative significance of the steep pressure gradient at the end of the lubricated region on the hoop stresses that cause localized bending distortions at the surface of the lining. These localized bending distortions, in turn, are likely to cause fatigue failure of the lining.

Introduction. One of the principle factors for the success of implant supported/retained overdentures (IOs) is the manner in which the stresses are transferred to the surrounding bone. Hence, the aim of the present study is to compare the stress induced in the mandible around IOs, using two different attachment systems, locator and telescopic. Methods. 3D finite element models were prepared using Pro/ENGINEER or PTC Creo to simulate 4 clinical situations: IOs using two different attachment systems, locator and telescopic, with and without splinting. A vertical compressive load of 35N was directed toward the central fossa in the molar region of each overdenture. Non-linear static contact analysis was carried out to determine the stress distribution in various components of IOs. Then, the models were analyzed by a finite element program ABAQUS, and displayed using Von Mises stress patterns. Results. The contact stress values developed on the implant and attachment components were lower with locator attachment, in both splinted and non-splinted models. On the other hand, the stress distribution to the cortical bone was more with non-splinted/splinted locator attachments (3.73/4.12 Mega Pascals) when compared to the non-splinted/splinted telescopic attachments (2.66/3.7 Mega Pascals). The stresses in all the components of overdenture were greater with the splinted model compared to non-splinted, in both the attachment systems.  Conclusion. The locator attachment might demonstrate superior clinical performance, as the stresses on implant and attachment components were less compared to telescopic. Non-splinted model showed better results in both the attachment types.

By means of a finite element method (FEM), the present study evaluated the effect of fiber post (FP) placement on the stress distribution occurring in endodontically treated upper first premolars (UFPs) with mesial–occlusal–distal (MOD) nanohybrid composite restorations under subcritical static load. FEM models were created to simulate four different clinical situations involving endodontically treated UFPs with MOD cavities restored with one of the following: composite resin; composite and one FP in the palatal root; composite and one FP in the buccal root; or composite and two FPs. As control, the model of an intact UFP was included. A simulated load of 150 N was applied. Stress distribution was observed on each model surface, on the mid buccal–palatal plane, and on two horizontal planes (at cervical and root-furcation levels); the maximum Von Mises stress values were calculated. All analyses were replicated three times, using the mechanical parameters from three different nanohybrid resin composite restorative materials. In the presence of FPs, the maximum stress values recorded on dentin (in cervical and root-furcation areas) appeared slightly reduced, compared to the endodontically treated tooth restored with no post; in the same areas, the overall Von Mises maps revealed more favorable stress distributions. FPs in maxillary premolars with MOD cavities can lead to a positive redistribution of potentially dangerous stress concentrations away from the cervical and the root-furcation dentin.

Abstract Using deep learning to analyze mechanical stress distributions has been gaining interest with the demand for fast stress analysis methods. Deep learning approaches have achieved excellent outcomes when utilized to speed up stress computation and learn the physics without prior knowledge of underlying equations. However, most studies restrict the variation of geometry or boundary conditions, making these methods difficult to be generalized to unseen configurations. We propose a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) model for predicting 2D von Mises stress distributions in solid structures. The cGAN learns to generate stress distributions conditioned by geometries, load, and boundary conditions through a two-player minimax game between two neural networks with no prior knowledge. By evaluating the generative network on two stress distribution datasets under multiple metrics, we demonstrate that our model can predict more accurate high-resolution stress distributions than a baseline convolutional neural network model, given various and complex cases of geometry, load and boundary conditions.

Structural finite-element analysis (FEA) has been widely used to study the biomechanics of human tissues and organs, as well as tissue–medical device interactions, and treatment strategies. However, patient-specific FEA models usually require complex procedures to set up and long computing times to obtain final simulation results, preventing prompt feedback to clinicians in time-sensitive clinical applications. In this study, by using machine learning techniques, we developed a deep learning (DL) model to directly estimate the stress distributions of the aorta. The DL model was designed and trained to take the input of FEA and directly output the aortic wall stress distributions, bypassing the FEA calculation process. The trained DL model is capable of predicting the stress distributions with average errors of 0.492% and 0.891% in the Von Mises stress distribution and peak Von Mises stress, respectively. This study marks, to our knowledge, the first study that demonstrates the feasibility and great potential of using the DL technique as a fast and accurate surrogate of FEA for stress analysis.

In the thoracolumbar region, between 7% and 30% of spinal fusion failures are at risk for pseudarthrosis. From a biomechanical perspective, the nonconformity of the intervertebral graft to the endplate surface could contribute to pseudarthrosis, given suboptimal stress distributions. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of endplate-graft conformation on endplate stress distribution, maximum Von Mises stress development, and stability. The study design used an experimentally validated finite element (FE) model of the L4–L5 functional spinal unit to simulate two types of interbody grafts (cortical bone and polycaprolactone (PCL)-hydroxyapatite (HA) graft), with and without endplate-conformed surfaces. Two case studies were completed. In Case Study I, the endplate-conformed grafts and nonconformed grafts were compared under without posterior instrumentation condition, while in Case Study II, the endplate-conformed and nonconformed grafts were compared with posterior instrumentation. In both case studies, the results suggested that the increased endplate-graft conformity reduced the maximum stress on the endplate, created uniform stress distribution on endplate surfaces, and reduced the range of motion of L4–L5 segments by increasing the contact surface area between the graft and the endplate. The stress distributions in the endplate suggest that the load sharing is greater with the endplate-conformed PCL-HA graft, which might reduce the graft subsidence possibility.

It is a regular practice in the oil industry to modify mechanical equipment to incorporate new technologies and to optimize production. In the case of pressure vessels, it is occasionally required to cut large openings in their walls in order to have access to the interior part of the equipment for executing modifications. This cutting process produces temporary loads, which were obviously not considered in the original mechanical design. Up to now, there is not a general purpose specification for approaching the assessments of stress levels once a large opening in a vertical pressure vessel has been made. Therefore stress distributions around large openings are analyzed on a case-by-case basis without a reference scheme. This work studies the distribution of the von Mises equivalent stresses around a large opening in FCC Regenerators during internal cyclone replacement, which is a frequently required practice for this kind of equipment. A finite element parametric model was developed in ANSYS, and both numerical results and illustrating figures are presented.

AbstractWith modern-day technical advances, high sagittal oblique osteotomy (HSOO) of the mandible was recently described as an alternative to bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for the correction of mandibular skeletal deformities. However, neither in vitro nor numerical biomechanical assessments have evaluated the performance of fixation methods in HSOO. The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical characteristics and stress distribution in bone and osteosynthesis fixations when using different designs and placing configurations, in order to determine a favourable plating method. We established two finite element models of HSOO with advancement (T1) and set-back (T2) movements of the mandible. Six different configurations of fixation of the ramus, progressively loaded by a constant force, were assessed for each model. The von Mises stress distribution in fixations and in bone, and bony segment displacement, were analysed. The lowest mechanical stresses and minimal gradient of displacement between the proximal and distal bony segments were detected in the combined one-third anterior- and posterior-positioned double mini-plate T1 and T2 models. This suggests that the appropriate method to correct mandibular deformities in HSOO surgery is with use of double mini-plates positioned in the anterior one-third and posterior one-third between the bony segments of the ramus.

A practical, rationally based method is presented for the automated optimum design of ship structures. The method required the development of (a) a rapid, design-oriented finite-element program for the analysis of ship structures; (b) a comprehensive mathematical model for the evaluation of the capability of the structure; and (c) a cost-effective optimization algorithm for the solution of a large, highly constrained, nonlinear redesign problem. These developments have been incorporated into a program called SHIPOPT. The efficiency and robustness of the method is illustrated by using it to determine the optimum design of a complete cargo hold of a general-purpose cargo ship. The overall dimensions and the design loads are the same as those used in the design of the very successful SD14 series of ships. The redesign problem contains 94 variables, a nonlinear objective function, and over 500 constraints of which approximately half are non-linear. Program SHIPOPT required approximately eight minutes of central processing unit time on a CDC CYBER 171 to determine the optimum design.

In order to obtain a higher pressure capacity for the high-pressure die with a larger sample cavity, two types of two-layer split dies with a round cylinder and a quadrate cylinder were designed based on the conventional belt-type die. Finite element analysis was performed to investigate the stress distributions and pressure capacities of the high-pressure dies using a derived Mohr–Coulomb criterion and the von Mises criterion for the cylinder and supporting rings, respectively. As predicted by the finite element analysis results, in the two-layer split dies with a round cylinder, the stress state of the cylinder can be only slightly improved; and the von Mises stress of the first layer supporting ring can be hardly decreased. However, in the two-layer split dies with a quadrate cylinder and sample cavity, the stress state of the cylinder can be remarkably improved. Simultaneously, the von Mises stress of the supporting rings, especially for the first-layer supporting ring, can be also effectively decreased. The pressure capacities of the two-layer split dies with a round cylinder and a quadrate cylinder are 16.5% and 63.9% higher with respect to the conventional belt-type die.

The complicated steel wheel and rail interaction on curve causes side wear on rail head. Thus, the cost of maintenance for the track on curve is significantly higher than that for track on a tangent. The objective of this research is to develop 3D printing technology for repairing the side wear. In this paper, the study examines induced residual thermal stresses on a rail during the cooling down process after 3D printing procedure using the coupled finite volume and finite element method for thermal and mechanical analysis respectively. The interface of the railhead and additive materials should conserve high stresses to prevent any crack initiation. Otherwise, the additive layer would likely shear off the rail due to crack propagation at the rail/additive interface. In the numerical analysis, a cut of 75-lb ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) worn rail is used as a specimen, for which a three-dimensional model is developed. The applied residual stresses, as a result of temperature gradient and thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between additive and rail materials, are investigated. At the beginning, the worn rail is at room temperature while the additive part is at a high initial temperature. Then, additive materials start to flow thermal energy into the worn rail and the ambient. The thermal distribution results from thermal analysis are then employed as thermal loads in the mechanical analysis to determine the von-Mises stress distribution as the decisive component. Then, the effect of preheating on residual stress distribution is studied. In this way, the thermo-mechanical analysis is repeated with an increase in railhead’s initial temperature. In thermal analysis, the temperature contours at different time steps for both the non-preheated and preheated cases indicate that preheating presents remarkably lower temperature gradient between rail and additive part and also represents a more gradual cooling down process to allow enough time for thermal expansion mismatch alignment. In mechanical analysis, the transversal von-Mises stress distribution at rail/additive interface is developed for all cases for comparison purposes. It is shown that preheating is a key factor to significantly reduce residual stresses by about 40% at all points along transversal direction of interface.
