A Reduced Model for Air Foil Journal Bearings for Time-Efficient Run-Up Simulations

Abstract This paper introduces a time-efficient reduced model for gas foil bearings. The foil structure of the considered air foil bearing can be modeled very realistically by a quasistatic nonlinear stiffness/friction hysteresis model; the gas film is assumed to be stiff enough to be neglected for the nonlinear forced response analysis. The main objective is to carry out nonlinear simulations of rotors with foil bearings in time domain. An important feature of the model is to enable fast run-up simulations, while maintaining important physical properties of the bearing. Furthermore, the determination of the model parameters should be simple to enable a fast adaption of new foil bearing geometries into existing rotor models. Finally, it should be possible to implement the bearing model very easily into arbitrary rotordynamic or multibody software tools. The basis of the approach is a two-dimensional hysteresis model, which approximates the nonlinear relationship between the movement of the rotor journal and the corresponding bearing forces. Although the here presented reduced bearing model cannot predict instability effects generated by the air film, the model may capture the nonlinear behavior of the foil bearing accurately. Hence, the nonlinear response of the rotor-bearing system may be predicted very precisely, if the rotor speed is below the threshold speed of instability. The input data for the reduced bearing model are measured or simulated hysteresis curves. The relevant parameters that influence the accuracy and the limits of the numerical model are discussed. Different simulations with very detailed finite element bearing models are presented in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the reduced modeling approach.

Foil bearings are one type of hydrodynamic air/gas bearings but with a compliant bearing surface supported by structural material that provides stiffness and damping to the bearing. The hybrid foil bearing (HFB) in this paper is a combination of a traditional hydrodynamic foil bearing with externally-pressurized air/gas supply system to enhance load capacity during the start and to improve thermal stability of the bearing. The HFB is more suitable for relatively large and heavy rotors where rotor weight is comparable to the load capacity of the bearing at full speed and extra air/gas supply system is not a major added cost. With 4,448N∼22,240N thrust class turbine aircraft engines in mind, the test rotor is supported by HFB in one end and duplex rolling element bearings in the other end. This paper presents experimental work on HFB with diameter of 102mm performed at the US Air force Research Laboratory. Experimental works include: measurement of impulse response of the bearing to the external load corresponding to rotor’s lateral acceleration of 5.55g, forced response to external subsynchronous excitation, and high speed imbalance response. A non-linear rotordynamic simulation model was also applied to predict the impulse response and forced subsynchronous response. The simulation results agree well with experimental results. Based on the experimental results and subsequent simulations, an improved HFB design is also suggested for higher impulse load capability up to 10g and rotordynamics stability up to 30,000rpm under subsynchronous excitation.

Nonlinear behavior of soils during a seismic event has a predominant role in current site response analysis. Soil response analysis, and more concretely laboratory data, indicate that the stress-strain relationship of soils is nonlinear and exhibits hysteresis. An equivalent linearization method, in which non-linear characteristics of shear modulus and damping factor of soils are modeled as equivalent linear relations of the shear strain is usually applied, but this assumption, however, may lead to a conservative approach of the seismic design. In this paper, we propose an alternative analysis formulation, able to address forced response simulation of soils exhibiting their characteristic nonlinear behavior. The proposed approach combines ingredients of modal and harmonic analyses enabling efficient time-integration of nonlinear soil behaviors based on the offline construction of a dynamic response parametric solution by using Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD)-based model order reduction technique.

A reduced model has been developed to describe the time evolution of a discharge in an iron core tokamak, taking into account the nonlinear behavior of the ferromagnetic during the discharge. The calculation of the discharge scenario and program regime in the tokamak is formulated as an inverse problem - the optimal control problem. The methods for solving the problem are compared and the analysis of the correctness and stability of the control problem is carried out. A model of “quasi-optimal” control is proposed, which allows one to take into account real power sources. The discharge scenarios are calculated for the T-15 tokamak with an iron core.

This paper describes the results of a study into the dynamic behavior of a magnetic bearing system. The research focuses attention on the influence of nonlinearities on the forced response of a two-degree-of-freedom rotating mass suspended by magnetic bearings and subject to rotating unbalance and feedback control. Geometric coupling between the degrees of freedom leads to a pair of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are then solved using both numerical simulation and approximate analytical techniques. The system exhibits a variety of interesting and somewhat unexpected phenomena including various amplitude driven bifurcational events, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the complete loss of stability associated with the escape from the potential well in which the system can be thought to be oscillating. An approximate criterion to avoid this last possibility is developed based on concepts of limiting the response of the system. The present paper may be considered as an extension to an earlier study by the same authors, which described the practical context of the work, free vibration, control aspects, and derivation of the mathematical model.

A new foil gas bearing with spring bumps was constructed, analyzed, and tested. The new foil gas bearing uses a series of compression springs as compliant underlying structures instead of corrugated bump foils. Experiments on the stiffness of the spring bumps show an excellent agreement with an analytical model developed for the spring bumps. Load capacity, structural stiffness, and equivalent viscous damping (and structural loss factor) were measured to demonstrate the feasibility of the new foil bearing. Orbit and coast-down simulations using the calculated stiffness and measured structural loss factor indicate that the damping of underlying structure can suppress the maximum peak at the critical speed very effectively but not the onset of hydrodynamic rotor-bearing instability. However, the damping plays an important role in suppressing the subsynchronous vibrations under limit cycles. The observation is believed to be true with any air foil bearings with different types of elastic foundations.

The regeneration of highly loaded turbine blades causes small variations of their geometrical parameters. To determine the influence of such regeneration-induced variances of turbine blades on the nozzle excitation, an existing air turbine is extended by a newly designed stage. The aerodynamic and the structural dynamic behavior of the new turbine stage are analyzed. The calculated eigenfrequencies are verified by an experimental modal analysis and are found to be in good agreement. Typical geometric variances of overhauled turbine blades are then applied to stator vanes of the newly designed turbine stage. A forced response analysis of these vanes is conducted using a uni-directional fluid-structure interaction approach. The effects of geometric variances on the forced response of the rotor blade are evaluated. It is shown that the vibration amplitudes of the response are significantly higher for some modes due to the additional wake excitation that is introduced by the geometrical variances e.g. 56 times higher for typical MRO-induced variations in stagger-angle.

Abstract Coulomb friction has an influence on the behavior of numerous mechanical systems. Coulomb friction systems or dry friction systems are nonlinear in nature. This nonlinear behavior requires complex and time demanding analysis tools to capture the dynamics of these systems. Recently, efforts have been made to develop efficient analysis tools able to approximate the forced response of systems with dry friction. The objective of this paper is to introduce a methodology that assists in these efforts. In this method, the piecewise-linear nonlinear response is separated into individual linear responses that are coupled together through compatibility constraint equations. The new method is demonstrated on a number of systems of varying complexity. The results obtained by the new method are validated through the comparison with results obtained by time integration. The computational savings of the new method is also discussed.

The assumption of “perfect flexibility” is shown to be self-consistent in an important class of finite-width foil bearing problems. When the membrane equations are written in the “stretched coordinates” of foil bearing theory, the usual edge conditions on the tape result in a statically determinate problem. The tape dynamics couples to the Reynolds lubrication equation through a single force-balance equation which does not entail the elastic strain.
