Once-Through Steam Generator (OTSG) is widely used in nuclear reactor system due to its advantages of compactness. The heat transfer performance of DOTSG is studied in this paper. In order to minimize the DOTSG volume and reduce the pressure drop of coolant, the pitch of inner helical tube is optimized with Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP). The double-tube is divided to three regions according to the coolant phase in secondary side. With given heat transfer load, choosing a combination function of minimum tube length and minimum pressure drop constructed with linear weighted method as objective function, the pitch optimization proceeds from superheated region to boiling region, and then to sub-cooled region in sequence, using Maximum Principle and gradient method. Then the pitch and temperature distribution along the axis is obtained respectively. The results show that the optimal pitch keeps constant along the axial direction in sub-cooled region and superheated region, but varies in boiling region. In boiling region, compared with minimum tube length optimization, the optimal tube length is 6.4% longer while the pressure drop is 36.3% smaller; and compared with minimum pressure drop optimization, the optimal pressure drop is 29.1% larger while the optimal tube length is 4.6% smaller. With the optimal pitch, the temperature distribution is in agreement with the general physic rules, which proves the correctness and the feasibility of the Maximum Principle method used for the structural optimization of DOTSG in this paper.

The heat produced in the nuclear reactor due to fission reaction must be kept in control or else it will damage the components in the reactor core. Nuclear plants are using water for the operation dissipation of heat. Instead, some chemical substances which have higher heat transfer coefficient and high thermal conductivity. This experiment aims to find out how efficiently a nanofluid can dissipate heat from the reactor vault. The most commonly used nanofluid is Al2O3 nanoparticle with water or ethylene as base fluid. The Al2O3 has good thermal property and it is easily available. In addition, it can be stabilized in various PH levels. The nanofluid is fed into the reactor?s coolant circuit. The various temperature distribution leads to different characteristic curve that occurs on various valve condition leading to a detailed study on how temperature distribution carries throughout the cooling circuit. As a combination of Al2O3 as a nanoparticle and therminol 55 as base fluid are used for the heat transfer process. The Al2O3 nanoparticle is mixed in therminol 55 at 0.05 vol.% concentration. Numerical analysis on the reactor vault model was carried out by using ABAQUS and the experimental results were compared with numerical results.

NuScale Power, Inc. is commercializing a 45 Megawatt electric light water nuclear reactor NuScale Power Module (NPM). Each NPM includes a containment vessel, a reactor vessel, a nuclear reactor core, an integral steam generator, and an integral pressurizer. The NuScale Power Module is cooled by natural circulation. The primary coolant in the Reactor Pressure Vessel is heated in the nuclear core, it rises through a central riser, it spills over and encounters the helical coil steam generator, it is cooled as steam is generated inside the steam generator, and it is again heated in the nuclear core. The Steam Generator also must be designed to provide adequate heat transfer, to allow adequate primary reactor coolant flow, and to provide adequate steam flow to produce the required power output. This paper presents the CFD results that describe the transport phenomena on the heat transfer and fluid flow dynamics in helical coil steam generator tubes. The ultimate goal of the CFD modeling is to predict the steam outlet conditions associated with the chosen helical coil tube geometries, solving the primary and secondary flow region together coupled with the helical coil tube. However, current studies are focused on the primary side with the heat flux boundary condition assigned on the outer surface of the helical coil steam generator. In this study, the ANSYS CFX v. 12.1 [1] was used to solve the three-dimensional mass, momentum and energy equations. The helical coil steam generator has complex geometry and modeling entire geometry requires the enormous memory that is beyond our hardware capability and is not practical. Therefore, geometry was limited to 1 degree of the wedge and 5% of the total length in the middle. Only external flow, single phase flow around the helical coils, is simulated using the standard k-ε model and shear stress transport model. From the results of the numerical simulation, the pressure drop and temperature profiles were determined. It is important to understand thermal hydraulic phenomena for the design and performance prediction of the reactor internal.

Integration of modeling and optimization of a thermal management system simultaneously depends on heat transfer performance of the components and the topological characteristics of the system. This paper introduces a heat current method to construct the overall heat current layout of a typical double-loop thermal management system. We deduce the system heat transfer matrix as the whole system constraint based on the overall heat current layout. Moreover, we consider the influences of structural and operational parameters on the thermal hydraulic performances of each heat exchanger by combining the empirical correlations of the heat transfer and pressure drop. Finally, the minimum pressure drop is obtained by solving these optimal governing equations derived by the Lagrange multiplier method considering the physical constraints and operational conditions. The optimization results show that the minimum pressure drop reduces about 8.1% with the optimal allocation of mass flow rates of each fluid. Moreover, the impact analyses of structural and operating parameters and boundary conditions on the minimum and optimal allocation present that the combined empirical correlation-heat current method is feasible and significant for achieving integrated component-system modeling and optimization.

This work presents an experimental study of the effect of a magnetic field on laminar forced convection of a ferrofluid flowing in a tube filled with permeable material. The walls of the tube are subjected to a uniform heat flux and the permeable bed consists of uniform spheres of 3-mm diameter. The ferrofluid synthesis is based on reacting iron (II) and iron (III) in an aqueous ammonia solution to form magnetite, Fe3O4. The magnetite is mixed with aqueous tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide, (CH3)4NOH, solution. The dependency of the pressure drop on the volume fraction, and comparison of the pressure drop and the temperature distribution of the tube wall is studied. Also comparison of the wall temperature distribution, convection heat transfer coefficient and the Nusselt numbers of ferrofluids with different volume fractions is investigated for various Reynolds numbers (147 < Re < 205 ). It is observed that the heat transfer is enhanced by using a porous media, increasing the volume fraction had a similar effect. The pressure coefficient decreases for higher Reynolds number. The effect of magnetic field in four strategies, named modes, on ferrofluid flow through the porous media is presented.

A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study of heat enhancement in helically grooved tubes was carried out by using a 3-dimensional simulation with the STARCCM+ simulation package software. The k-ε model selected for turbulent flow simulation and the governing equations were solved by using the finite volume method. Geometric models of the current study include 3 rectangular grooved tubes with different groove width (w) and depth (e) which varies from 0.2 mm to 0.6 mm for the same tube length of 2.0m and diameter of 7.1 mm. The simulations were performed in the Reynolds number (Re) range of 4000–10000 with a uniform wall heat flux of 3150 w/m2 applied as a boundary condition on the surface of each tube. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of different groove dimensions on the thermal performance and pressure drop of water inside the grooved tubes and clarify the structural nature of the flow in regards to flow swirl and turbulent kinetic energy distributions. It was found that the highest performance belongs to the groove with these dimensions (w = 0.2 mm and e = 0.2 mm) which was considered for further study. Then, for these same groove dimensions four pitch size to tube diameter (p/D) ratios ranging from 1 to 18 were simulated for the same 2.0 m length tube. The results for Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) showed that by increasing the (p/D) ratio both the Nu numbers and the friction factors (f) values decrease. With a smaller pitch length (p) the turbulence intensity generated by the internal groove was also found to increase. The physical behavior of the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics were observed by contour plots which showed an increasing swirl flow and turbulent kinetic energy as p/D decreases. With an increase of the Nu number for smaller p/D ratio, a penalty of a higher pressure drop was obtained. The results were validated with a previous experimental work and the average error between the experimental and CFD Nu numbers and f were 13% and 8% respectively. A higher level of turbulent kinetic energy is observed near the grooves, as compared to the smooth areas of the pipe surface away from the grooves, which are expected to lead to higher levels of heat transfer. The effect of pitch length (p) on the flow pattern were plotted by streamlines along the tubes, by decreasing the pitch size (p/D ratio) an increase in the swirl is noticed as evidenced by the plots of the path lines. Finally, empirical correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor were provided as a function of p/D and Re number. This study indicates that the incorporation of the internal groove, of particular dimensions, can lead to an improvement of performance in heat exchanger devices. A limited variation of the groove dimensions was conducted and it was found that the values of Nu and f do not improve with an increase of (w) nor with that of (e) from 0.2–0.6 mm.

In the present study, a numerical model was developed for laminar flow in a microchannel with a suspension of microsized phase change material (PCM) particles. In the model, the carrier fluid and the particles are simultaneously present, and the mass, momentum, and energy equations are solved for both the fluid and particles. The particles are injected into the fluid at the inlet at a temperature equal to the temperature of the carrier fluid. A constant heat flux is applied at the bottom wall. The temperature distribution and pressure drop in the microchannel flow were predicted for lauric acid microparticles in water with volume fractions ranging from 0 to 8%. The particles show heat transfer enhancements by decreasing the temperature distribution in the working fluid by 39% in a 1 mm long channel. Meanwhile, particle blockage in the flow passage was found to have a negligible effect on pressure drop in the range of volume fractions studied. This work is a first step towards providing insight into increasing heat transfer rates with phase change-based microparticles for applications in microchannel cooling and solar thermal systems.
