Integrated Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Student (Distance Learning) Education in Thermal Systems Design

Abstract This paper describes an educational program in practical thermal systems design that encompasses design project-oriented teaching of undergraduate, graduate and off-campus professional students, industry-university collaboration, and community outreach. The program uses an integrated approach that treats thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer as parts of one interconnected area, in which solutions to real-life design problems can be obtained only when all these aspects are considered simultaneously. Cooperation between students at various stages of their educational and professional careers is fostered to maximize the synergy that results from combining insights gained in industry and those developed in structured classroom instruction. The program consists of a comprehensive portfolio of Thermal Systems Design Instruction Initiatives. An interactive design laboratory format is used for cooperative execution of open-ended mini-projects spanning two-to-three weeks, and a semester-long project. The use of virtual project groups through the web removes geographical barriers. Computer programs for the solution of projects are placed on-line to create a design library for use by students in future semesters as case studies. An Energy-Efficient Environmentally-Safe Design Studio is planned where projects on environmental responsibility, and energy efficiency can be conducted for the local community. Annual design studio conferences will be held to foster K-12 and community involvement, and to demonstrate sustainable technologies. Collaboration with local thermal systems related organizations such as the Iowa Energy Center is also being pursued, which will provide inherent mechanisms for technology transfer from course-related projects to industry and the community.

ABSTRACT This case, based on a real-life situation of how logistics costs function in daily operations, aims to provide students with the opportunity to understand how logistics costs are calculated and how the inter-organizational nature of these costs affects the profitability of two companies. The case hinges on understanding cost behavior (fixed and variable) and on management control systems design. Although logistics costs represent a small fraction of total costs in manufacturing companies, they can negatively affect the bottom line if left unattended. Students are presented with data relating to a three-year project in the automotive industry that shows that the project has been experiencing a sustained increase in costs that has eroded its profit margin. While it appears that logistics costs are the problem, it cannot be verified until the contracts are studied. In addition, the financial- and contract-related data provided are sufficient to extend the profitability analysis to the provider of logistics services. This case is suitable for management accounting courses at the master's or advanced undergraduate level; it has been tested and well received by students who want to gain a greater understanding of logistics costs—their nature, behavior, possible containment strategies, and inter-organizational effects. Data Availability: Some of the data are from public sources, but the logistics contracts and cost schedules are private; the confidentiality agreement with the two companies requires masking certain details and modifying the numeric data.


Schools have become the default mental health providers for children and adolescents, but they are often poorly equipped to meet the mental health needs of their students. The introduction tackles how to make students eligible for school-based services using the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Using the new DSM-5 as an organizing principle, this book then addresses the 12 most common mental disorders of childhood and adolescence, ages 3–18. While there are many books that address child and adolescent psychopathology, this book focuses on how to help students with mental disorders in pre-K–12 schools. Each chapter addresses the prevalence of a disorder in school-age populations, appropriate diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, comorbid disorders, rapid assessment instruments available, school-based interventions using multitiered systems of support, and easy-to-follow suggestions for progress monitoring. Unique to this book, each chapter has detailed suggestions for how school-based clinicians can collaborate with teachers, parents, and community providers to address the needs of youth with mental health problems so that school, home, and community work together. Each chapter ends with a list of extensive web resources and a real-life case example drawn from the clinical practice of the authors. The final chapter addresses two newly proposed diagnoses for self-harm in the DSM-5 and brings a cautious and sensible approach to assessing and helping students who may be at risk for serious self-injury or suicide.

Although increasing concern about climate change has raised awareness of the fundamental role of forest ecosystems, forests are threatened by human-induced impacts worldwide. Among them, wildfire risk is clearly the result of the interaction between human activities, ecological domains, and climate. However, a clear understanding of these interactions is still needed both at the global and local levels. Numerous studies have proven the validity of the socioecological system (SES) approach in addressing this kind of interdisciplinary issue. Therefore, a systematic review of the existing literature on the application of SES frameworks to forest ecosystems is carried out, with a specific focus on wildfire risk management. The results demonstrate the existence of different methodological approaches that can be grouped into seven main categories, which range from qualitative analysis to quantitative spatially explicit investigations. The strengths and limitations of the approaches are discussed, with a specific reference to the geographical setting of the works. The research suggests the importance of local community involvement and local knowledge consideration in wildfire risk management. This review provides a starting point for future research on forest SES and a supporting tool for the development of a sustainable wildfire risk adaptation and mitigation strategy.

The full involvement of local communities in the tourism sector, not only benefits them and the environment in general, but also improves the quality of the tourism experience. Projects imposed from outside and motivated by the pursuit of rapid economic growth often override local needs, conditions and resources, and result in unacceptable environmental, social and cultural costs. Local involvement is crucial to sustainable and appropriate development, which meets the needs of the local people and safeguards their natural and cultural environments. Thus a local development strategy is essential, especially in disadvantaged areas and countries.

The HERMES Cognitive Care and Guidance for Active Aging project proposes an integrated approach to cognitive assistance, promoting the autonomy of elderly users through pervasive technology. This work aims to describe elderly people’s opinions when they are presented scenarios developed in this project. Two focus groups were organized in Austria and Spain with a view to collecting their impressions about the way in which the technological device can cover their needs; complementarily, a second session was conducted including a quantitative questionnaire. Although some participants were reluctant to use the technology, they welcomed some functionalities of the HERMES system and they considered that using them can help them to become familiar with them. Usefulness, usability, and use of real-life information for functionalities such as cognitive games are considered to be key areas of the project. This evaluation has provided the developers of the system with meaningful information to improve it and it guarantees that the system addresses elderly people’s needs.

Purpose – Archaeological, palaeontological and geological research has been conducted in Kenya for many years. These research efforts have resulted in exceptional depth of understanding of the region's cultural heritage including those with rock art. Unfortunately, very few of the research programmes have engaged communities as active participants in conservation and consumers of the research findings. The purpose of this paper is to report how collaboration between the National Museums of Kenya and the Trust of African Rock Art (TARA) is creating a link between research, conserving heritage and community engagement. Design/methodology/approach – An overview of two rock art tourism community projects undertaken by TARA will reveal that engaging communities and disseminating research findings does not only foster preservation of sites but is critical in transforming rock art sites into economic endeavours whose outcomes are providing alternative livelihoods. Findings – Community engagement remains the only viable way of ensuring long-term conservation of heritage sites going forward. Originality/value – TARA is the only organization conducting this kind of work in the African continent. This case study therefore, provides authentic information on local community involvement as a conservation strategy in the African context.

ABSTRACTThe urgency to set up the Border Between Indonesia and Timor-Leste and the border crossers is based on much more complex historical reasons than the arrangement of Indonesia's borders with other countries. Border governance policies between Indonesia and Timor-Leste are characterized by: border governance policies indicate a desire to adopt an integrated approach, governance practices tend to be fragmented where two very dominant approaches are the security approach and the socio-economic welfare approach. A border governance policy that ignores cultural identity variables leads to a reverse response, namely the use of cultural identity to challenge the country's dominant conception and policy in border governance. The phenomenon of "rat road" and other cross-border interaction networks called illegal by the state can be read as a form of local community resistance to the claim of state sovereignty over the border. In an integrated border governance policy, a cultural approach should be one of the main components that characterize other approaches. Jailly puts the four dimensions of the policy parallel, the cultural approach in border governance policy to the principles that fuel security policy, local politics and economic policy in border governance. The practical consequence of this study is the policy that border governance must move beyond the dominance of the economic security approach to an integrated approach. This study proposes the concept of trans-border social and cultural space as an important element in integrated border governance.Key Words: Border governance, Indonesia – Timor-Leste, Cultural crosser borders.

An Integrated Approach to Product Delivery Planning and SchedulingProduct delivery planning and scheduling is a task of high priority in transport logistics. In distribution centres this task is related to deliveries of various types of goods in predefined time windows. In real-life applications the problem has different stochastic performance criteria and conditions. Optimisation of schedules itself is time consuming and requires an expert knowledge. In this paper an integrated approach to product delivery planning and scheduling is proposed. It is based on a cluster analysis of demand data of stores to identify typical dynamic demand patterns and product delivery tactical plans, and simulation optimisation to find optimal parameters of transportation or vehicle schedules. Here, a cluster analysis of the demand data by using the K-means clustering algorithm and silhouette plots mean values is performed, and an NBTree-based classification model is built. In order to find an optimal grouping of stores into regions based on their geographical locations and the total demand uniformly distributed over regions, a multiobjective optimisation problem is formulated and solved with the NSGA II algorithm.
