In this paper, a complete zero-dimensional transient simulation model of a solar-assisted refrigeration plant is presented. In addition, a case study is discussed, aiming at determining the optimal configuration of the system, from the energetic point of view, in a specific application. The system under analysis consisted of several components: evacuated solar collectors, circulation pumps, variable speed pump, water storage tanks, auxiliary heater, single-stage H2O-LiBr absorption chiller, cooling tower, feedback controller, on/off hysteresis controller, single lumped capacitance building and controllers. The simulation was performed using the TRNSYS environment which is provided by a large component library. This software also includes a detailed database with weather parameters for several European cities. The system and the building were simulated using TRNSYS built in models. The system was simulated using specially designed control strategies and varying the main design variables. In particular, a variable speed pump on the solar collector was implemented in order to maximize the tank temperature and minimizing the heat losses. Finally a sensitivity analysis was also performed in order to calculate the set of synthesis/design parameters that maximize the total system efficiency.

Camera Device is crucial components of Automobile punching parts on-line detector and Its dynamic characteristics has a critical influence on the accuracy of Automobile punching parts on-line detector. To reduce the relative acceleration of Camera Device to the measured part, biaxial body of Automobile Punching Parts On-line Detector was optimized. On the basis of analyzing mechanism, simplifying the prototype, determining the design variables and the objective function and the constraint condition, this paper puts forward the parameter optimization mathematic model with the minimum of the acceleration of Camera Device relative to the point on the measured work piece as objective function and completes mechanism simulation and optimization by the ADAMS software. The results show that some design parameters gets more reasonable and dynamic performance of Automobile punching parts on-line detector is better.

The paper presents concept and application of mathematical and simulation model of variable-speed drives (hereafter VSD or VSDs). The models were/are used in rolling mills engineering, commissioning and maintenance. The VSDs are the main actuators there. In order to reach optimal performance in terms of material tolerances, wear and tear, and reliability it is necessary to have good VSD control which meets not only technology targets but also properties of the VSD mechanical train (set of motor rotors, shafts, gear boxes, couplings, clutches, spindles, working and backup rolls, etc.). Only the optimal VSD control and appropriate operation and maintenance can ensure trouble-free operation and long lifetime of the VSDs. We have been dealing with the VSDs models since 1990. Since then we have used the models in many practical applications. Currently, we concentrate mainly on an optimal and advanced interstand section control. Apart from various PID control strategies, also Fuzzy control has been tested and analyzed. The paper mentions some of our experiences we have achieved in this area.

Different from the extant power flow analysis methods, this paper discusses the power flows for the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) in three-phase four-wire systems from the point of view of impedance matching. To this end, combined with the designed control strategies, the establishing method of the UPQC impedance model is presented, and on this basis, the UPQC system can be equivalent to an adjustable impedance model. After that, a concept of impedance matching is introduced into this impedance model to study the operation principle for the UPQC system, i.e., how the system changes its operation states and power flow under the grid voltage variations through discussing the matching relationships among node impedances. In this way, the nodes of the series and parallel converter are matched into two sets of impedances in opposite directions, which mean that one converter operates in rectifier state to draw the energy and the other one operates in inverter state to transmit the energy. Consequently, no matter what grid voltages change, the system node impedances are dynamically matched to ensure that output equivalent impedances are always equal to load impedances, so as to realize impedance and power balances of the UPQC system. Finally, the correctness of the impedance matching-based power flow analysis is validated by the experimental results.

The photodegradation mechanism of 1-phenyl-4-allyl-tetrazol-5-one has been studied using (time-dependent) density functional theory with the M06-HF, B3LYP, and PBE0 functionals and the VDZ basis set. All calculations have been carried out using the polarizable continuum model to simulate the solvent effects of methanol. The reaction pathway evolution on the triplet state has been characterised to validate a previously postulated experimental-based mechanism. The transition states and minimums have been initially located by local scanning in partial constrained optimisation, followed by a fully relaxed search procedure. The UV spectra has shown to be better described with PBE0 functional when compared with the experimental results, having the M06-HF a shift of 40 nm. From the energetic point of view, the postulated mechanism has been validated in this work showing a concerted photoextrusion of the N2 molecule. The intramolecular proton transfer occurs at a later stage of the mechanism after cyclization of the allyl group on a triplet biradical intermediate. The photoproduct observed experimentally, a pyrimidinone, has been characterised. The infrared spectroscopic reaction profile has also been proposed.

An outline is presented for construction of wavelet filters with compact support. Our approach does not require any extensive simulations for obtaining the values of design variables like other methods. A unified framework is proposed for designing halfband polynomials with varying vanishing moments. Optimum filter pairs can then be generated by factorization of the halfband polynomial. Although these optimum wavelets have characteristics close to that of CDF 9/7 (Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau), a compact support may not be guaranteed. Subsequently, we show that by proper choice of design parameters finite wordlength wavelet construction can be achieved. These hardware friendly wavelets are analyzed for their possible applications in image compression and feature extraction. Simulation results show that the designed wavelets give better performances as compared to standard wavelets. Moreover, the designed wavelets can be implemented with significantly reduced hardware as compared to the existing wavelets.

Abstract Field development planning of gas condensate fields using numerical simulation has many aspects to consider that may lead to a significant impact on production optimization. An important aspect is to account for the effects of network constraints and process plant operating conditions through an integrated asset model. This model should honor proper representation of the fluid within the reservoir, through the wells and up to the network and facility. Obaiyed is one of the biggest onshore gas field in Egypt, it is a highly heterogeneous gas condensate field located in the western desert of Egypt with more than 100 wells. Three initial condensate gas ratios are existing based on early PVT samples and production testing. The initial CGRs as follows;160, 115 and 42 STB/MMSCF. With continuous pressure depletion, the produced hydrocarbon composition stream changes, causing a deviation between the design parameters and the operating parameters of the equipment within the process plant, resulting in a decrease in the recovery of liquid condensate. Therefore, the facility engineers demand a dynamic update of a detailed composition stream to optimize the system and achieve greater economic value. The best way to obtain this compositional stream is by using a fully compositional integrated asset model. Utilizing a fully compositional model in Obaiyed is challenging, computationally expensive, and impractical, especially during the history match of the reservoir numerical model. In this paper, a case study for Obaiyed field is presented in which we used an alternative integrated asset modeling approach comprising a modified black-oil (MBO) that results in significant timesaving in the full-field reservoir simulation model. We then used a proper de-lumping scheme to convert the modified black oil tables into as many components as required by the surface network and process plant facility. The results of proposed approach are compared with a fully compositional approach for validity check. The results clearly identified the system bottlenecks. The model can be used to propose the best tie-in location of future wells in addition to providing first-pass flow assurance indications throughout the field's life and under different network configurations. The model enabled the facility engineers to keep the conditions of the surface facility within the optimized operating envelope throughout the field's lifetime.

Abstract The convensional procedure of helical torsion spring design is an iterative process because of large number of requirements and relations that are to be attained once at a time. The design parameters are varied at random until the spring design satisfies performance requirements. A CAD of the spring for minimum weight is formulated with and without the variation of the maximum normal stress with the wire diameter. The CAD program solves by employing the method of Lagrange-Multipliers. The optimal parameters, in a closed form are obtained, normalized and plotted. These explicit relations of design variables allow direct evaluation of optimal design objective and hence, an absolute optimum could be achieved. The comparison of optimum results with those previously published, shows a pronounced achievement in the reduction of torsion spring weight.

Here we consider the results of experimental studies of the method of removing scale from the surface of steel sheet products. We propose a new method and device for cleaning the surface of rolled sheets from scale by cutting plates rotating around an axis moving translationally along the treated surface. The plates are tilted in the direction of the rotation vector at an angle of up to 10 degrees and are elastically pressed to the treated surface. This makes it possible to reproduce the macro-dimensions of sheet metal during the surface cleaning process. We present the results of experimental studies. We constructed mathematical and graphical dependences describing the influence of process factors on the efficiency of cleaning the rolled surface. We show that the most significant influence on the optimization parameter is exerted by the force of the tool's impact on the surface of the workpiece. Moreover, this influence is realized in a directly proportional relationship. Other factors studied, namely the angle of inclination of the plate, its rotation speed and feed, have a much smaller impact on the degree of cleaning of rolled products. These studies were necessary from the point of view of determining the design parameters of the power elements of both the technological equipment implementing this method and the technological installation as a whole. We adopted the experimental plan based on the real production capabilities of the industrial partner and corresponded to the classical concepts of the cutting theory. The described results make it possible to plan further experiments to study the directions of using the method

Abstract In this study, we summerize the method of fuzzy optimization using fuzzy numbers as design variables. In order to detect flaw in fuzzy calculation, we use LR-fuzzy numbers, which is known as its simplicity in calculation. We also use simple fuzzy numbers’ operations, which was proposed in the previous papers. The proposed method has unique characteristics that we can obtain fuzzy sets in design variables (results of the design) directly from single numerical optimizing process. Which takes a large number of numerical optimizing processes when we try to obtain similar results in the conventional methods. In the numerical examples, we compare the proposed method with several other methods taking imprecision in design parameters into account, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to figure out in which way a hinterland-based inland depot model can help a shipping company in solving the empty container problem at a regional level. The repositioning of empty containers is a very expensive operation that does not generate profits. Consequently, it is very important to provide an efficient empty container management. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the empty container problem is discussed at a regional repositioning level. For solving this problem, a mixed-integer linear optimization model is developed and validated by using the German hinterland as a case. Findings The findings show that the hinterland-based solution is able to reduce the total system costs by 40 per cent. In addition, total of truck kilometres could be reduced by more than 30 per cent too. Research limitations/implications This research is based on German data only. Originality/value This paper closes the gap in empty container repositioning research by looking at the hinterland dimension from a single shipping company point of view.
