Optimization of 3D Printed Elastomeric Nanocomposites for Flexible Strain Sensing Applications

Abstract Flexible and sensitive strain sensors can be utilized as wearable sensors and electronic devices in a wide range of applications, such as personal health monitoring, sports performance, and electronic skin. This paper presents the fabrication of a highly flexible and sensitive strain sensor by 3D printing an electrically conductive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposite on a PDMS substrate. To maximize the sensor’s gauge factor, the effects of MWNT concentration on the strain sensing function in nanocomposites are evaluated. Critical 3D printing and curing parameters, such as 3D printing nozzle diameter and nanocomposites curing temperature, are explored to achieve the highest piezoresistive response, showing that utilizing a smaller deposition nozzle size and higher curing temperature can result in a higher gauge factor. The optimized 3D printed nanocomposite sensor’s sensitivity is characterized under cyclic tensile loads at different maximum strains and loading rates. A linear piezoresistive response is observed up to 70% strain with an average gauge factor of 12, pointing to the sensor’s potential as a flexible strain sensor. In addition, the sensing function is almost independent of the applied load rate. The fabricated sensors are attached to a glove and used as a wearable sensor by detecting human finger and wrist motion. The results indicate that this 3D printed functional nanocomposite shows promise in a broad range of applications, including wearable and skin mounted sensors.

Abstract In recent years, highly flexible nanocomposite sensors have been developed for the detection of a variety of human body movements. To precisely detect the bending motions of human joints, the sensors must be able to conform well with the human skin and produce signals that effectively describe the amount of deformation applied to the material during bending. In this paper, a carbon nanotube-based piezoresistive strain sensor is developed via the direct ink writing based embedded 3D printing method. The optimum weight concentration range of carbon nanotubes in the nanocomposite inks, appropriate for embedded 3D printing, is identified. Samples with complex 2D and 3D geometries are printed to demonstrate the manufacturing capabilities of the embedded printing process. The sensitivity of the piezoresistive strain sensor is optimized by determining the ideal nanofiller concentration, curing temperature, and nozzle size to produce the highest gauge factor in a wide strain range. The piezoresistive and mechanical properties of the optimized sensors are fully characterized to verify the suitability for skin-attachable strain sensing applications. The developed sensors have a wide sensing range, high sensitivity, and minimal strain rate dependence. In addition, their low elasticity and high biocompatibility allow them to be comfortably bonded on the human skin.

In this work a flexible strain sensor is fabricated using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing technique. The strain sensor is fabricated using commercially available flexible Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) filaments and liquid metal Galinstan Ga 68.5% In 21% Sn 10%. The strain sensor consists of U-shape 2.34mm long and 0.2mm deep channels embedded inside a TPU 3D printed structure. The performance of the strain sensor is measured experimentally. Gauge Factor is estimated by measuring change in electric resistance when the sensor is subject to 13.2% – 38.6% strain. Upon straining and unstraining, results from characterization tests show high linearity in the range of 13.2% to 38.6% strain with very little hysteresis. However, changes due to permanent deformations are a limiting factor in the usefulness of these sensors because these changes limit the consistency of the device. FDM 3D printing shows promise as a method for fabricating flexible strain sensors. However, more investigation is needed to look at the effects of geometries and 3D printing process parameters on the yield elongation of the flexible filaments. Additionally, more investigation is needed to observe the effect of distorted dimensions of the 3D printed channels on the sensitivity of the strain sensor. It is anticipated that successful implementation of these commercially available filaments and FDM 3D printers will lead to reduction in cost and complexity of developing these flexible sensors.

Optical sensing is one of many promising applications for all-dielectric photonic materials. Herein, we present an analytical and numerical study on the strain-responsive spectral properties of a bioinspired sensor. The sensor structure contains a two-dimensional periodic array of dielectric nanodisks to mimic the optical behavior of grana lamellae inside chloroplasts. To accumulate a noticeable response, we exploit the collective optical mode in grana ensemble. In higher plants, such a mode appears as Wood’s anomaly near the chlorophyll absorption line to control the photosynthesis rate. The resonance is shown persistent against moderate biological disorder and deformation. Under the stretching or compression of a symmetric structure, the mode splits into a couple of polarized modes. The frequency difference is accurately detected. It depends on the stretch coefficient almost linearly providing easy calibration of the strain-sensing device. The sensitivity of the considered structure remains at 5 nm/% in a wide range of strain. The influence of the stretching coefficient on the length of the reciprocal lattice vectors, as well as on the angle between them, is taken into account. This adaptive phenomenon is suggested for sensing applications in biomimetic optical nanomaterials.

In this study, a basic design of area-arrayed graphene nanoribbon (GNR) strain sensors was proposed to realize the next generation of strain sensors. To fabricate the area-arrayed GNRs, a top-down approach was employed, in which GNRs were cut out from a large graphene sheet using an electron beam lithography technique. GNRs with widths of 400 nm, 300 nm, 200 nm, and 50 nm were fabricated, and their current-voltage characteristics were evaluated. The current values of GNRs with widths of 200 nm and above increased linearly with increasing applied voltage, indicating that these GNRs were metallic conductors and a good ohmic junction was formed between graphene and the electrode. There were two types of GNRs with a width of 50 nm, one with a linear current–voltage relationship and the other with a nonlinear one. We evaluated the strain sensitivity of the 50 nm GNR exhibiting metallic conduction by applying a four-point bending test, and found that the gauge factor of this GNR was about 50. Thus, GNRs with a width of about 50 nm can be used to realize a highly sensitive strain sensor.

Additive-manufacturing is one of the major pillars of the new industrial revolution and the three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has been highlighted in this scenario. Among the many areas benefited by 3D-printing, the development of electrochemical sensors has appeared in evidence in the last years. One potential application of 3D-printed electrochemical sensors is devoted to forensic chemistry, which demands for portable analytical methods that can provide on-site measurements and thus bring a relevant information in loco. In this context, this review highlights the recent contribution of 3D-printing technology on the development of electrochemical sensors with great promises for on-site analysis in “real-world” forensic scenarios. From the detection of trace explosives, gunshot residues, illicit drugs and chemical threats, to the measurement of adulterants in food and fuels, we show the wide range of applications that 3D-printed electrochemical sensors have been proposed and future demands that can be addressed by such a powerful, affordable, and accessible tool.

Homogeneous mixing of microscopic volume fluids at low Reynolds number is of great significance for a wide range of chemical, biological, and medical applications. An efficient jet mixer with arrays of micronozzles was designed and fabricated using additive manufacturing (three-dimensional (3D) printing) technology for applications in centrifugal microfluidic platforms. The contact surface of miscible liquids was enhanced significantly by impinging plumes from two opposite arrays of micronozzles to improve mixing performance. The mixing efficiency was evaluated and compared with the commonly used Y-shaped micromixer. Effective mixing in the jet mixer was achieved within a very short timescale (3s). This 3D printed jet mixer has great potential to be implemented in applications by being incorporated into multifarious 3D printing devices in microfluidic platforms.

Abstract Inflatable structures provide significant volume and weight savings for future space and soft robotic applications. Structural health monitoring (SHM) of these structures is essential to ensuring safe operation, providing early warnings of damage, and measuring structural changes over time. In this paper, we propose the design of a single flexible strain sensor for distributed monitoring of an inflatable tube, in particular, the detection and localization of a kink should that occur. Several commercially available conductive materials, including 3D-printing filaments, conductive paint, and conductive fabrics are explored for their strain-sensing performance, where the resistance change under uniaxial tension is measured, and the corresponding gauge factor (GF) is characterized. Flexible strain sensors are then fabricated and integrated with an inflatable structure fabric using screen-printing or 3D-printing techniques, depending on the nature of the raw conductive material. Among the tested materials, the conductive paint shows the highest stability, with GF of 15 and working strain range of 2.28%. Finally, the geometry of the sensor is designed to enable distributed monitoring of an inflatable tube. In particular, for a given deformation magnitude, the sensor output shows a monotonic relationship with the location where the deformation is applied, thus enabling the monitoring of the entire tube with a single sensor.

Sensor designs found in nature are optimal due to their evolution over millions of years, making them well-suited for sensing applications. However, replicating these complex, three-dimensional (3D), biomimetic designs in artificial and flexible sensors using conventional techniques such as lithography is challenging. In this paper, we introduce a new processing paradigm for the simplified fabrication of flexible sensors featuring complex and bioinspired structures. The proposed fabrication workflow entailed 3D-printing a metallic mold with complex and intricate 3D features such as a micropillar and a microchannel, casting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) inside the mold to obtain the desired structure, and drop-casting piezoresistive graphene nanoplatelets into the predesigned microchannel to form a flexible strain gauge. The graphene-on-PDMS strain gauge showed a high gauge factor of 37 as measured via cyclical tension-compression tests. The processing workflow was used to fabricate a flow sensor inspired by hair-like ‘cilia’ sensors found in nature, which comprised a cilia-inspired pillar and a cantilever with a microchannel that housed the graphene strain gauge. The sensor showed good sensitivity against both tactile and water flow stimuli, with detection thresholds as low as 12 µm in the former and 58 mm/s in the latter, demonstrating the feasibility of our method in developing flexible flow sensors.
