Sensitivity of Fatigue Assessment to the Use of Different Reference S-N Curves

The S-N curve based fatigue assessment approach is the most widely used one in both ship and offshore industry, in contrast with a fracture mechanics approach. The S-N approach, implemented by either simplified or spectral method, has to apply S-N curves to calculate fatigue strength. The S-N curve, which represents the number of cycles (N) of a constant amplitude stress range (S) that will cause a fatigue failure, is normally developed based on experimental data. Which S-N curve should be applied to a particular detail depends very much on the geometry of the detail, welding information as well as loading condition. There are various S-N curves published by different institutions, e.g., S-N curves published by UK HSE, IIW, AWS etc. The newly developed ABS “Guidance on Fatigue Assessment of Offshore Structures”, [1], proposes the ABS S-N curves, in which two categories of joints, tubular and non-tubular, are included, and both size and environment effects are taken into account. However, the application in Gulf of Mexico is also influenced by API recommendations. In API RP 2A, AWS S-N curves are referred, which in US practice is accepted for fixed (buoyant and non-buoyant) platform deck structures. The objective of this paper is to address the difference between different S-N curves and to present the detailed results of fatigue assessment by using different S-N curves for non-tubular joints. Conclusions made based on the study provide more background on the S-N curve application in fatigue assessment.

A full-penetration weld on both sides between a shell and a flat head is evaluated for fatigue strength by four methods, two based on structural stress and two on notch stress. Internal pressure is cycled with constant amplitude. The allowable cycles are calculated by each method. The number of cycles for the same geometry and loading varies widely, ranging from 4,835 to 137,000.

By research of simple tubular joints, thin-shell element analyses have been conducted for thousands of DTK joints frequently used in offshore structures in this paper. These joints are subjected to axial load, by use of nonlinear least squares fitter, the above results are derived a new set of parametric equations, in terms of several non-dimensional geometric ratios γ, ξ, β, τ and θ with the Origin software. Separate analyses have been conducted for the difference of SCFs in DTK joints and SCFs for TK joint from empirical formulas. The SCF results of these joints could act as a good reference for both further academic studies on SCF of other complex joints and engineering designing works.

Generally, jack-up structures are used for production drilling and exploration of hydrocarbons. The combination of mobility and the behavior as a fixed structure in operational conditions has made it an important structure in the offshore industry over the last 40 years. When a jack-up structure has been in operation for a great part of its original design-life and intention is there to extend the usage of this structure at a specific location, an investigation on fatigue degradation of the structure is an essential factor that has to be carried out before taking any decision. Fatigue is the process of damage accumulation in material due to stress fluctuation caused by variation of loads in service time. The fatigue failure occurs when accumulated damage has exceeded a critical level. In this paper, the remaining fatigue capacity of the jack-up structure is considered as an indicator for adequate use of the structure. It can be specified based on the difference between design-fatigue and fatigue experienced by the structure. The design-fatigue can be determined based on fluctuation of loads during the lifetime of the structure and experienced fatigue is specified by the load conditions, which the structure has experienced during its service time. When the information on the load conditions which the structure has experienced in its service time is available or known precisely, determination of the remaining fatigue capacity could be carried out by using the Palmgren–Miner’s rule. In practice, uncertainties are present in loads and characteristics of material. Hence it will be reasonable to determine the remaining fatigue reliability of the structure by the reliability methods. In this paper, based on a crack propagation approach and achieved information from inspection, it is shown that the remaining fatigue reliability of jack-up structures could be determined and updated by using a Bayesian procedure in the duration of the service time.

Background. The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of 2Shape, Twisted File (TF) and EndoSequence Xpress (ESX) nickel-titanium rotary files at intracanal temperature (35°C). Methods. Twenty 2Shape TS1 (25/.04), 20 TF (25/.04) and 20 ESX (25/.04) files were tested for cyclic fatigue at intracanal temperature (35°C). All the instruments were rotated in artificial canals which were made of stainless steel with an inner diameter of 1.5 mm, 60° angle of curvature and a radius curvature of 5 mm until fracture occurred; the time to fracture was recorded in seconds using a digital chronometer and the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) for each file was calculated. Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction was performed to statistically analyze data using SPSS 21.0. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results. NCF values revealed that the 2Shape had significantly the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, followed by TF and ESX at intracanal temperature (P<0.05). The difference was significant between the TF and ESX groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference among the 2Shape, TF and ESX files with respect to the lengths of the fractured file fragments (P>.05). Conclusion. Within the limitations of present study, it was concluded that the cyclic fatigue resistance of 2Shape files at the intracanal temperature is higher than that of TF and ESX files.

Long Term Operation (LTO) of nuclear power plants (NPPs) requires an ageing management review and a revalidation of Time Limited Ageing Analyses (TLAAs) of structures and components important for nuclear safety. An important ageing effect to manage is fatigue. Generally, the basis for this is formed by the fatigue analyses of the safety relevant components. In this paper, the methodology for the revalidation of fatigue TLAAs is demonstrated for LTO of NPP Borssele in the Netherlands. The LTO demonstration starts with a scoping survey to determine the components and locations having relevant fatigue loadings. The scope was defined by assessment against international practice and guidelines and engineering judgment. Next, a methodical review was performed of all existing fatigue TLAAs. This also includes the latest international developments regarding environmental effects. In order to reduce conservatism, a comparison was made between the number of cycles in the analyses and the number of cycles projected to the end of the intended LTO period. The projected number of cycles is based on transient counting. The loading conditions used in the analyses were assessed by means of temperature measurements by the fatigue monitoring system (FAMOS). As a result of the review, further fatigue assessment or assessment of environmental effects was necessary for certain locations. New analyses were performed using state-of-the-art calculation and assessment methods. The methodology is demonstrated by means of an example of the surge line. The model includes the piping, as well as the nozzles on the pressurizer and the main coolant line. The thermal loadings for the fatigue analysis are based on temperature measurements. Fatigue management of the NPP is ensured by means of the fatigue concept where load monitoring, transient counting and fatigue assessment are coupled through an integrated approach during the entire period of LTO.

The various functions desired from a frontline warship such as a frigate, corvette or a destroyer, coupled with the requirement of very high speeds and economic viability restricting the size, necessitates a very dense arrangement of weapons and sensors on the top deck and superstructure. Accordingly, Navies across the world have faced several problems with respect to functions for which a good aerodynamic design for these structures is essential. Major issues include smoke nuisance created due to impinging of the ship's exhaust gases on to the top deck leading to possible suction by engine intakes and high turbulence in the ship's air-wake leading to ship aircraft interface concerns. The flow field on the helodeck is extremely complex due to its geometry and interaction with the wake of the ship’s superstructure. A knowledge of this complexity is essential for ensuring safe helo operations on the helodeck. The problem of ship helicopter interaction has hogged the lime light in recent times, due to rising demand for design of warships for increased stealth, especially in the past two decades. Consequently, several researchers in countries with advanced Navies have invested considerable resources towards evolving both experimental and numerical solutions for the problem. However, given the military nature of the operations, open literature on the subject containing details of such research, which can be used as reference material for present work, are limited. Considering the complexities involved in the problem, an attempt has been made in this paper to holistically review the widely scattered and limited literature in this field. A good amount of literature on marine helo applications emerge from the offshore industry. Keeping in mind that the fields of warship design and offshore structures are dissimilar and have their peculiar problems, informed conclusions have been made in drawing lessons from available literature.

This research studied the degradation of tensile properties of kenaf fibre reinforced polypropylene composites due to cyclic immersion into two different solutions, as well as comparison of the developed composites’ tensile properties under continuous and cyclic immersion. Composites with 40% and 60% fibre loadings were immersed in tap water and bleach for 4 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 3 days of immersion and 4 days of conditioning in room temperature (28°C and 55% humidity). The tensile strength and modulus of composites were affected by fibre composition, type of liquid of immersion, and number of cycles. The number of immersion cycles and conditioning caused degradation to tensile strength and modulus of kenaf fibre reinforced polypropylene composites. Continuous and cyclic immersion in bleach caused tensile strength of the composites to differ significantly whereas, for tensile modulus, the difference was insignificant in any immersion and fibre loadings. However, continuous immersion in the bleach reduced the tensile strength of composites more compared to cyclic immersion. These preliminary results suggest further evaluation of the suitability of kenaf fibre reinforced polypropylene composites for potential bathroom application where the composites will be exposed to water/liquid in cyclic manner due to discontinuous usage of bathroom.
