A novel concept of producing false-twist yarns by cyclical stress fluctuation was developed. The forming principle was introduced to analyze the formation process of false twists on rotary threaded contact surfaces. Geometric analysis indicates that cyclical stress variations produce extra rotations (false twists) on fiber strands in the yarn formation area, causing twist redistribution and fiber arrangement remodeling with the appearance of local fiber reversion. Theoretical analysis reveals that more false twists are produced when the spun yarn is in contact with surfaces of high traverse speeds. Then, a motion simulation model using different traverse speeds of the threaded contact surface was established to compare the yarn internal stress variation, verifying the false-twist efficiency at different traverse speeds. Finally, a systematic comparison was conducted between the yarns spun at different traverse speeds. It was shown that the yarn properties improved with higher traverse speeds of the threaded contact surface, achieving less hairiness, high yarn strength, and low residual torque.

PurposeThis study aims to research the influence of non-probabilistic design variables on interval robust optimization of electric multiple units (EMU) brake module, therefore obtain the reasonable of design variables of the EMU brake module.Design/methodology/approachA robust optimization model of the EMU brake module based on interval analysis is established. This model also considers the dimension tolerance of design variables, and it uses symmetric tolerance to describe the uncertainty of design variables. The interval order relation and possibility degree of interval number are employed to deal with the uncertainty of objective function and constraint condition, respectively. On this basis, a multiobjective robust optimization model in view of interval analysis is established and applied to the robust optimization of the EMU brake module.FindingsCompared with the traditional method and the method proposed in the reference, the maximum stress fluctuation of the EMU brake module structure is smaller after using the method proposed in this paper, which indicates that the robustness of the maximum stress of the structure has been improved. In addition, the weight and strength of the structure meet the design requirements. It shows that this method and model introduced in this research have certain feasibility.Originality/valueThis study is the first attempt to apply the robust optimization model based on interval analysis to the optimization of EMU structure and obtain the optimal solution set that meets the design requirements. Therefore, this study provides an idea for nonprobabilistic robust optimization of the EMU structure.

The application of increased pressure was used as a strategy to investigate the effect of different cell structures on the mechanical properties of Al-TiB2 composite foams. In situ Al-xTiB2 (x = 5, 10 wt.%) composites were foamed under three different pressures (0.1 MPa, 0.24 MPa, 0.4 MPa) through the liquid melt route. The macro-structure of the composite foams was analyzed in terms of cell size distribution measured by X-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). It was found that the mean cell size decreases, and the cell size distribution range narrows with increasing pressure. Uniaxial compression tests revealed that the stress fluctuation (Rsd) of 10TiB2 foams is larger than that of 5TiB2 foams under the same pressure. Moreover, cell size refinement causes the simultaneous deformation of multi-layer cells, which leads to an enhancement in the energy absorption efficiency and specific energy absorption. The comparison of experimental data with theoretical predictions (G&A model) is discussed.

AbstractThe size effects of mechanical properties influence the microdeformation behaviors and failure mechanisms of hierarchical lamellar bones. Investigations of the continuous deformation behaviors and structure–behavior–property relationships of nanoscale lamellar bones provide essential data for reducing the risk of fracture. Here, five pillars with diameters ranging from 640 to 4971 nm inside a single lamella were fabricated. In situ pillar compressive tests inside a scanning electron microscope directly revealed the diameter-dependent enhanced strength, ductility, and stress fluctuation amplitude. Real-time observations also revealed the segmented deformation and morphological anisotropy of pillars with smaller diameters and the slight elastic recovery of pillars with larger diameters. The critical diameter leading to the brittle-to-ductile transition was confirmed. The “analogous to serrated flow” stress fluctuation behaviors at the nanoscale exhibited a significant size effect, with coincident fluctuation cycles independent of diameter, and each cycle of the fluctuation manifested as a slow stress increase and a rapid stress release. The discontinuous fracture of collagen fibrils, embedded enhancement of hydroxyapatite crystals, and layered dislocation movement on the basis of strain gradient plasticity theory were expected to induce cyclical stress fluctuations with different amplitudes.

Machining distortion is a recurring problem in the machining of monolithic aircraft parts. This paper aims to study the machining distortion minimization of monolithic aircraft parts. Firstly, the energy principle of machining distortion was analyzed. Then, a rapid prediction model of the final part distortion for beam parts was proposed based on the equivalent stress, and the initial bending strain energy contained in the final part was used to characterize the bending distortion risk of the final part. Numerical simulation and milling experiments verified the effectiveness of the proposed prediction model. The relative error between the experimental and calculated results does not exceed 26.5%. Finally, the influence of initial residual stress fluctuation, part geometry and the part location on part distortion was analyzed from the energy point of view. The obtained results indicated that the expected final part distortion can be minimized by adjusting these three factors.

A computational method of fluid-structure coupling is implemented to predict the fatigue response of a high-pressure turbine blade. Two coupling levels, herein referred to as a “fully coupled” and “decoupled” methods are implemented to investigate the influence of multi-physics interaction on the 3 D stress state and fatigue response of a turbine blade. In the fully-coupled approach, the solutions of the fluid-flow and the solid-domain finite element problem are obtained concurrently, while in the decoupled approach, the independently computed aerodynamic forces are unilaterally transferred as boundary conditions in the subsequent finite element solution. In both cases, a three-dimensional unsteady stator-rotor aerodynamic configuration is modelled to depict a forced-vibration loading of high-cycle failure mode. Also analyzed is the low-cycle phenomenon which arises due to the mean stresses of the rotational load of the rotating turbine wheel. The coupling between the fluid and solid domains (fully-coupled approach) provides a form of damping which reduces the amplitude of fluctuation of the stress history, as opposed to the decoupled case with a resultant higher amplitude stress fluctuation. While the stress amplitude is higher in the decoupled case, the fatigue life-limiting condition is found to be significantly influenced by the higher mean stresses in the fully-coupled method. The differences between the two approaches are further explained considering three key fatigue parameters; mean stress, multiaxiality stress state and the stress ratio factors. The study shows that the influence of the coupling between the fluid and structures domain is an important factor in estimating the fatigue stress history.

Purpose As in real applications several alternating current (AC) currents may be injected to the electronic devices, this study aims to analyze their effects on the lifetime of the solder joints and, consequently, shed the light on these effects at the design phase for other researchers to consider. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors investigated on current waveform shapes on the performance and reliability of the solder joints in electronic package. Three common and extensively used current shapes in several simulations and experiments were selected to study their effects on the solder joint performance. Findings The results demonstrate a sever thermal swing and stress fluctuation in the solder joint induced in the case of triangle current type because the critical states lack any relaxation time. In fact, the stress intensification in the solder under application of the triangle current type has been shown to contribute to increasing brittle intermetallic compounds. An accelerated increase of on-state voltage of power semiconductor was also observed in under application of the triangle current type. Originality/value The originality of this paper is confirmed.

Affected by the mining activities of the working face, the surrounding rock of the roadway is easily deformed and destroyed. For deep buried roadways, the deformation and destruction of the surrounding rock is particularly prominent. Under the influence of in situ stress fluctuation, 3−1103 tailgate of the Hongqinghe coal mine was in a complex stress environment with a maximum stress exceeding 20 MPa. Affected by mining stress, the roadway behind the working face was seriously deformed. In order to alleviate the deformation of the roadway, directional blasting and cutting measures for the 3−1103 tailgate were adopted in this paper. The mechanism of crack propagation in single-row to three-hole directional blasting was revealed by numerical simulation. The blasted rock was divided into three regions according to the crack condition. The numerical analysis of the cutting heights of 0 m, 10 m, 12 m, and 14 m, respectively, showed the stress peaks of different cutting heights and the deformation law of the surrounding rock. The pressure relief effect was the best at 14 m cutting height. At this time, the peak stress was 39 MPa with the smallest roadway deformation. Based on numerical simulation and theoretical analysis results, engineering tests were carried out. Field monitoring showed that the deformation of the roadway was inversely proportional to the roof cutting height. The higher the cutting height is, the more preferential the roadway is to reach the stable state. It can be concluded that directional blasting can change the surrounding rock structure, control the deformation of the roadway, and play a role in pressure relief. It provides a new measure to control roadway deformation.

Abstract Data-driven neural network methods have been widely applied for the prediction of stress–strain behavior, but have proven ill-suited for the extrapolation of time-dependent creep behavior. To overcome this problem, we embedded a physics-based model into feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) to construct a model-guided neural network (MGNN). We proposed a new initialization method for the weights in the model, based on selecting the appropriate physics-based model and activation function, and the resulting MGNN was used for predicting the creep behavior of blade-grooves in a steam turbine rotor under in-service conditions. We compared the performance of the MGNN with baseline methods, namely MGNN0, a FFNN, and a nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (network). The results showed that the physics-based model and the neural network in the MGNN complemented each other: the model provided physical relationships to guide the neural network, and the neural network provided stress-fluctuation-tracking for the model. This functionality enabled primary creep behavior to be used as training data for the MGNN, enabling it to predict secondary creep behavior.
