Submarine Pipeline Installation JIP: Strength and Deformation Capacity of Pipes Passing Over the S-Lay Vessel Stinger

The development of deep water gas fields using trunklines to carry the gas to the markets is sometime limited by the feasibility/economics of the construction phase. In particular there is a market for using S-lay vessels in water depth larger than 1000m. The S-lay feasibility depends on the applicable tension at the tensioner which is a function of water depth, stinger length and stinger curvature (for given stinger length by its curvature). This means that, without major vessel up-grading and to avoid too long stingers that are prone to damages caused by environmental loads, the application of larger stinger curvatures than presently allowed by current regulations/state of the art is needed. The work presented in this paper is a result of the project “Development of a Design Guideline for Submarine Pipeline Installation” sponsored by STATOIL and HYDRO. The technical activities are performed in co-operation by DNV, STATOIL and SNAMPROGETTI. The scope of the project is to produce a LRFD (Load Resistant Factor Design) design guideline to be used in the definition and application of design criteria for the laying phase e.g. to S and J-lay methods/equipment. The guideline covers D/t from 15 to 45 and applied strains over the overbend in excess of 0.5%. This paper addresses the failure modes relevant for combined high curvatures/strains, axial, external pressure and local forces due to roller over the stinger of an S-lay vessel and to sea bottom contacts, particularly: • Residual pipe ovality after laying, • Maximum strain and bending moment capacity. Analytical equations are proposed in accordance with DNV OS F101 philosophy and design format.

This paper presents the results of the analysed S-lay scenarios in relation to extended laying ability of medium to large diameter pipelines in order to define the statistical distribution of the relevant load effects, i.e. bending moment and longitudinal strain as per static/functional, dynamic/total, and environmental load effects. The results show that load effects (longitudinal applied strain and bending moment) are strongly influenced by the static setting (applied stinger curvature and axial force at the tensioner in combination with local roller reaction over the stinger). The load effect distributions are the basis for the development of design criteria/safety factors which fulfil a predefined target safety level.

Offshore pipeline systems commonly incorporate induction-heating formed bends along flowlines and in pipeline end termination assemblies and spools. In deepwater locations, the pipeline and bends are subjected to various combinations of external pressure, internal pressure, bending moment and temperature changes, during installation, and operation. Although there is a history of research into the limiting loads and failure modes of such bends and pipelines systems there is, as yet, no comprehensive guidance to enable the calculation of the maximum capacity under combined bending and external pressure loading. Conservative guidance is presented in DNV OS-F101 (2007) [1] that proposes increasing the pipe wall thickness to reduce the effect of external pressure collapse effects thus enabling bending formulations relevant to straight pipe to be used. This proposed approach leads to unfeasibly large wall thickness requirements in very deepwater applications. There is therefore a requirement for a method to design deepwater bends for installation and operation conditions with levels of safety comparable with those used in the design of straight sections of pipelines that does not depend on the requirement to increase the wall thickness to the extent proposed in the current DNV guidance. In this study, a nonlinear FE method using ABAQUS is proposed to evaluate the ultimate capacities of induction-heating formed bends. The method takes into account the combined effects of non-linear material properties, initial ovality, wall thinning/thickening, external or internal pressure, internal CRA cladding and temperature change on the ultimate moment capacity of the bend. The numerical model is validated by comparison with available published results. The method developed here is based on the limit state design formulations in the current DNV OS-F101 guidance.

Considering the future development for offshore pipelines, moving towards difficult operating condition and deep/ultra-deep water applications, there is the need to understand the failure mechanisms and better quantify the strength and deformation capacity of corroded pipelines considering the relevant failure modes (collapse, local buckling under internal and external pressure, fracture / plastic collapse etc.). A Joint Industry Project sponsored by ENI E&P and Statoil has been launched with the objective to quantify and assess the strength and deformation capacity of corroded pipes in presence of internal overpressure and axial/bending loading. In this paper: • The State-of-the-Art on strength and deformation capacity of corroded pipes is presented; • The full-scale laboratory tests on corroded pipes under bending moment dominated load conditions, performed at C-FER facilities, are shown together with the calibrated ABAQUS FE Model; • The results of the ABAQUS FEM parametric study are presented.

The growing need to satisfy the national oil industry demand has required the evaluation and retrofit of the existing pipelines, in addition to create new risers for transportation and distribution of oil products. The current development of offshore structures requires better designs of the risers capable to assuring an optimal level of security. It is common to get situations, in the performance of fixed offshore platforms, in which risers might be found with lowly internal pressure or empty due to maintenance or repairing. This condition could represent an unfavorable situation that might become highly critical given the conditions they are found in. Therefore, this research is focused to study the mechanical behavior and their structural integrity of the pipelines such as, risers with helicoidally welds under combined load (external pressure, bending moment and axial compression). In particular, for safety prediction, the failure modes and uncertainties involved in each loading condition need to be incorporated in the analysis in order to specify the pipelines use thresholds that keep them over acceptable safety levels within their operating lifetimes.

There is an increasing demand for subsea electrical power transmission in the oil- and gas industry. Electrical power is mainly required for subsea pumps, compressors and for direct electrical heating of pipelines. The majority of subsea processing equipment is installed at water depths less than 1000 meters. However, projects located offshore Africa, Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico are reported to be in water depths down to 3000 meters. Hence, Nexans initiated a development programme to qualify a dynamic deep water power cable. The qualification programme was based on DNV-RP-A203. An overall project plan, consisting of feasibility study, concept selection and pre-engineering was outlined as defined in DNV-OSS-401. An armoured three-phase power cable concept assumed suspended from a semi-submersible vessel at 3000 m water depth was selected as qualification basis. As proven cable technology was selected, the overall qualification scope is classified as class 2 according to DNV-RP-A203. Presumed high conductor stress at 3000 m water depth made basis for the identified failure modes. An optimised prototype cable, with the aim of reducing the failure mode risks, was designed based on extensive testing and analyses of various test cables. Analyses confirmed that the prototype cable will withstand the extreme loads and fatigue damage during a service life of 30 years with good margins. The system integrity, consisting of prototype cable and end terminations, was verified by means of tension tests. The electrical integrity was intact after tensioning to 2040 kN, which corresponds to 13 000 m static water depth. A full scale flex test of the prototype cable verified the extreme and fatigue analyses. Hence, the prototype cable is qualified for 3000 m water depth.

Problems regarding the combined axial force and bending moment for the behaviour of semi-rigid steel joints under service loading have been recognized in recent studies. As an extended research on the cyclic behaviour of a bolted endplate joint, this study is performed relating to the contribution of column axial force on the cyclic behaviour of the joint. Using finite element analysis, the deteriorations of the joint performance have been evaluated. The preliminary parametric study of the joint is conducted with the consideration of flexibility of the column flange. The column axial force was observed to significantly influence the joint behaviour when the bending of the column flange dominates the failure modes. The reductions of moment resistance predicted by numerical analysis have been compared with codified suggestions. Comments have been made for further consideration of the influence of column axial load in seismic design of bolted endplate joints.

The BP operated Greater Plutonio field development offshore Angola comprises a spread-moored FPSO in 1,300 m water depth, serving as a hub processing the fluids produced from or injected into the subsea wells. The selected riser system is a Hybrid Riser Tower comprising 11 risers bundled around a central structural tubular (Core Pipe), tensioned by a steel Buoyancy Tank at its top and maintained by an anchor base at its bottom. The Riser Tower is fabricated onshore and then towed to the field for final installation in deepwater near the FPSO. Once the Riser Tower installation is completed the risers are connected to the FPSO by means of flexible jumpers and to the flowlines by means of rigid spools. All fabrication and installation work has been performed by Acergy. This paper presents the studies performed to cover all the steps of the installation phase: build-up of the Orcaflex model, miscellaneous studies to determine model and analyses parameters, towing analysis, upending analysis, Buoyancy Tank ballasting and deballasting analyses, and contingency analyses. This paper is mainly focused on the Riser Tower installation but also covers the installation of the Riser Tower anchor and of the flexible jumpers in order to give a complete overview of the operations related to the Riser Tower system. A comparison between computed data and data measured during operations is also presented to support the overall installation analysis methodology. Lessons learned are provided for future improvement of Riser Tower installation covering main challenges such as Riser Tower modeling, weight/buoyancy repartition along the Riser Tower, Buoyancy Tank ballasting adjustment in Lobito bay, fatigue issues during surface and subsurface tow, bending moment issues during upending, etc.

As the important lessons learned from the Fukushima-nuclear power plant accident, mitigation of failure consequences and prevention of catastrophic failure became essential against severe accident and excessive earthquake conditions. To improve mitigation measures and accident management, clarification of failure behaviors with locations is premise under design extension conditions such as severe accidents and earthquakes. Design extension conditions induce some different failure modes from design conditions. Furthermore, best estimation for these failure modes are required for preparing countermeasures and management. Therefore, this study focused on identification of failure modes under design extension conditions. To observe ultimate failure behaviors of structures under extreme loadings, new experimental techniques were adopted with simulation materials such as lead and lead-antimony alloy, which has very small yield stress. Postulated failure modes of main components under design extension conditions were investigated according three categories of loading modes. The first loading mode is high temperature and internal pressure. Under this mode, ductile fracture and local failure were investigated. At the structural discontinuities, local failure may become dominant. The second is high temperature and external pressure loading mode. Buckling and fracture were investigated. Buckling occurs however hardly break without additional loads or constraints. The last loading is excessive earthquake. Ratchet deformation, collapse, and fatigue were investigated. Among them, low-cycle fatigue is dominant.
