Submarine Pipeline Installation Joint Industry Project: Global Response Analysis of Pipelines During S-Laying

The development of deep water gas fields using trunklines to carry the gas to the markets is sometime limited by the feasibility/economics of the construction phase. In particular there is market for using S-lay vessel in water depth larger than 1000m. The S-lay feasibility depends on the applicable tension at the tensioner which is a function of water depth, stinger length and stinger curvature (for given stinger length by its curvature). This means that, without major vessel up-grading and to avoid too long stingers that are prone to damages caused by environmental loads, the application of larger stinger curvatures than allowed by current regulations/state of the art, is needed. The work presented in this paper is a result of the project “Development of a Design Guideline for Submarine Pipeline Installation” sponsored by STATOIL and HYDRO. The technical activities are performed in co-operation by DNV, STATOIL and SNAMPROGETTI. This paper presents the results of the analysed S-lay scenarios in relation to extended laying ability of medium to large diameter pipelines in order to define the statistical distribution of the relevant load effects, i.e. bending moment and longitudinal strain as per static/functional, dynamic/total, and environmental load effects. The results show that load effects (longitudinal applied strain and bending moment) are strongly influenced by the static setting (applied stinger curvature and axial force at the tensioner in combination with local roller reaction over the stinger). The load effect distributions are the basis for the development of design criteria/safety factors which fulfil a predefined target safety level.

The scope of the project is to produce a LRFD (Load Resistant Factor Design) design guideline to be used in the definition and application of design criteria for the laying phase e.g. to S and J-lay methods/equipment. The guideline covers D/t from 15 to 45 and applied strains over the overbend in excess of 0.5%. This paper addresses the failure modes relevant for combined high curvatures/strains, axial, external pressure and local forces due to roller over the stinger of an S-lay vessel and to sea bottom contacts, particularly: • Residual pipe ovality after laying, • Maximum strain and bending moment capacity. Analytical equations are proposed in accordance with DNV OS F101 philosophy and design format.

Designing floating bridges for wide and deep fjords is very challenging. The floating bridge is subjected to wind, wave, and current loads. All these loads and corresponding load effects should be properly evaluated, e.g. for ultimate limit state design check. In this study, the wind-, wave- and current-induced load effects of an end-anchored floating bridge are numerically investigated. The considered floating bridge, about 4600 m long, was an early concept for crossing Bjørnafjorden, Norway. It consists of a cable-stayed high bridge part and a pontoon-supported low bridge part, and has a number of eigen-modes, which might be excited by the relevant environmental loads. Numerical simulations show that the sway motion and strong axis bending moment along the bridge girder are primarily induced by wind loads, while variations of heave motion and weak axis bending moment are mainly induced by wave loads. Current loads mainly provide damping force to reduce the variations of sway motion and strong axis bending moment. Turbulent wind can cause significantly larger low-frequency resonant responses than second-order difference-frequency wave loads.

Given the influence of near-fault vertical seismic action, we established a girder-spring-damping-rod model of a double-span continuous girder bridge and used the transient wave function expansion method and indirect modal function method to calculate the seismic response of the bridge. We deduced the theoretical solution for the vertical and longitudinal contact force and displacement response of the bridge structure under the action of the near-fault vertical seismic excitation, and we analyzed the influence of the vertical separation of the bridge on the bending failure of the pier. Our results show that under the action of a near-fault vertical earthquake, pier-girder separation will significantly alter the bridge’s longitudinal displacement response, and that neglecting this separation may lead to the underestimation of the pier’s bending damage. Calculations of the bending moment at the bottom of the pier under different pier heights and cross-sectional diameters showed that the separation of the pier and the girder increases the bending moment at the pier’s base. Therefore, the reasonable design of the pier size and tensile support bearing in near-fault areas may help to reduce longitudinal damage to bridges.

Abstract Duration of load (DOL) is a key factor in design of wood structures, which makes the reliability analysis of wood structures more complicated. The importance of DOL is widely recognized, yet the methods and models through which it is incorporated into design codes vary substantially by country/region. Few investigations of the effect of different model assumptions of DOL and other random variables on the results of reliability analysis of wood structures can be found. In this paper, comparisons are made on the reliability analysis methods that underlie the China and the Canada standards for design of wood structures. Main characteristics of these two methods, especially the way how DOL is treated are investigated. Reliability analysis was carried out with the two methods employing the same set of material properties and load parameters. The resulted relationships between reliability index β and resistance partial factor γR* (the β–γR* curves) for four load combinations are compared to study the safety level indicated by the two methods. The comparison shows that the damage accumulation model (Foschi–Yao model) in the Canada analysis method is highly dependent on the type and duration of load, resulting in more conservative design than the China analysis method in loading cases dominated by dead load, but less conservative design in cases of high level of live loads. The characteristics of the load effect term of the performance function are also found to make considerable difference in reliability levels between the two methods. This study aims to provide references for researchers and standard developers in the field of wood structures.

The BP operated Greater Plutonio field development offshore Angola comprises a spread-moored FPSO in 1,300 m water depth, serving as a hub processing the fluids produced from or injected into the subsea wells. The selected riser system is a Hybrid Riser Tower comprising 11 risers bundled around a central structural tubular (Core Pipe), tensioned by a steel Buoyancy Tank at its top and maintained by an anchor base at its bottom. The Riser Tower is fabricated onshore and then towed to the field for final installation in deepwater near the FPSO. Once the Riser Tower installation is completed the risers are connected to the FPSO by means of flexible jumpers and to the flowlines by means of rigid spools. All fabrication and installation work has been performed by Acergy. This paper presents the studies performed to cover all the steps of the installation phase: build-up of the Orcaflex model, miscellaneous studies to determine model and analyses parameters, towing analysis, upending analysis, Buoyancy Tank ballasting and deballasting analyses, and contingency analyses. This paper is mainly focused on the Riser Tower installation but also covers the installation of the Riser Tower anchor and of the flexible jumpers in order to give a complete overview of the operations related to the Riser Tower system. A comparison between computed data and data measured during operations is also presented to support the overall installation analysis methodology. Lessons learned are provided for future improvement of Riser Tower installation covering main challenges such as Riser Tower modeling, weight/buoyancy repartition along the Riser Tower, Buoyancy Tank ballasting adjustment in Lobito bay, fatigue issues during surface and subsurface tow, bending moment issues during upending, etc.

Anchor penetration is an important issue involved in the study of submarine pipeline damage accidents. To explore the penetration of a ship’s anchor under certain conditions, this study investigated the motion and force of an anchor and formulated a calculation method for the bottoming speed of an anchor. Meanwhile, the depth of anchor penetration was calculated under different conditions according to bottoming speed through programming. Finally, the reliability of the calculation method for the penetration depth was verified by comparing the actual measurement and the numerical simulation. On the basis of the findings, the calculation results were further analyzed, and conclusions were derived regarding the relationship between anchor mass, the horizontal projected area of the anchor, the anchor height on the water surface, and water depth. The conclusions provide suggestions for the application of anchor penetration in terms of seabed depth with certain reference values.

The upper and lower courses of sea oil and gas exploitationare connected by submarine pipeline which is called life line project. Free span often occurs because of the unevenness and scour of seabed, and fatigue is one of the main failure modes.In this paper, with the finite element numerical simulation method, based on the harmonic response analysis, the research on the structural response of free span under the vibration induced by vortex was investigated, and the effect of the factors such as flow velocity, length of free span. According to the analysis results,the fatigue life of free span was evaluated.

After a brief review of the principal effects of soil-structure interaction on the response of structures subjected to earthquakes, a simple practical procedure is presented for evaluating these effects. The procedure is next applied to a study of the response of a proposed 400-ft steel gravity platform in 300-ft water depth, and the results of the study are discussed. The structure investigated consists of three large-diameter legs of tubular construction interconnected by a truss-type bracing system and supported on three circular pads.
