The purpose of this paper is to show an exemplary methodology for the integrated conceptioning of a floating wind turbine system with focus on the spar-type hull and the wind turbine blade-pitch-to-feather controller. It is a special interest to use a standard controller, which is easily implementable, even at early design stages. The optimization of the system is done with adapted static and dynamic models through a stepwise narrowing of the design space according to the requirements of floating wind turbines. After selecting three spar-type hull geometries with variable draft a simplified nonlinear simulation model with four degrees of freedom is set up and then linearized including the aerodynamics with the blade pitch controller in the closed-loop. The linear system allows conventional procedures for SISO controller design giving a theoretically suitable range of controller gains. Subsequently, the nonlinear model is used to find the optimal controller gains for each platform. Finally, a nonlinear coupled model with nine degrees of freedom gives the optimal solution under realistic wind and wave loads.

A numerical procedure for the fully coupled aerodynamic and hydroelastic time-domain analysis of an offshore floating wind turbine system including rotor blade dynamics, dynamic motions and flexible deflections of the structural system is illustrated. For the aerodynamic analysis of wind turbine system, a design code FAST developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is employed. It is combined with a time-domain hydroelasticity response analysis code ‘Shell-Stress Oriented Dynamic Analysis Code (SSODAC)’ which has been developed by one of the authors. Then, the dynamic coupling between the rotating blades and the structural system under wind and wave loads is taken into account. By using this method, a series of analysis for the hydroelastic response of an offshore large floating structure with two rotors under combined wave and wind loads is performed. The results are compared with those under the waves and those under the winds, respectively, to investigate the coupled effects in terms of stress as well as motions. The coupling effects between the rotor-blades and the motions are observed in some cases. The impact on the structural design of the floating structure, tower and blade is addressed.

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of Offshore Floating Wind Turbine system subjected to coupled wind and wave loads in time domain. Floating Wind Turbine system in deep water has the great potential in exploiting renewable wind energy in the near future due to the energy and environmental issues. Distinct structural arrangements determine the complexity of motion behaviors and loading characteristics of OFWTs. The aerodynamic loads play a dominant part in the loading pattern, which is distinguished from traditional floating offshore oil and gas structures. To simulate the response induced by wind and wave, a calculation scheme is proposed containing the coupling between aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. Accordingly, a set of time-domain numerical codes is developed and presented. With the integrated aero and hydro dynamic analysis codes, simulations are conducted to obtain performance of Hywind system. Cases for decay, white noise, wind only and the coexistence of wind and wave are investigated. The results are compared to the test statistics collected from a model test, which was carried out in Deepwater Offshore Basin in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Abstract Design optimization of mooring systems is an important step towards the reduction of costs for the floating wind turbine (FWT) industry. Accurate prediction of slowly-varying horizontal motions is needed, but there are still questions regarding the most adequate models for low-frequency wave excitation, and damping, for typical FWT concepts. To fill this gap, it is fundamental to compare existing load models against model tests results. This paper describes a calibration procedure for a three-columns semi-submersible FWT, based on adjustment of a time-domain numerical model to experimental results in decay tests, and tests in waves. First, the numerical model and underlying assumptions are introduced. The model is then validated against experimental data, such that the adequate load models are chosen and adjusted. In this step, Newman’s approximation is adopted for the second-order wave loads, using wave drift coefficients obtained from the experiments. Calm-water viscous damping is represented as a linear and quadratic model, and adjusted based on decay tests. Additional damping from waves is then adjusted for each sea state, consisting of a combination of a wave drift damping component, and one component with viscous nature. Finally, a parameterization procedure is proposed for generalizing the results to sea states not considered in the tests.

The present paper deals with the estimation of the short-term extreme motions of a spar floating wind turbine in parked rotor conditions, through a 1:30 at-sea experiment, carried out at the Natural Ocean Engineering Laboratory (NOEL) of Reggio Calabria (Italy). Thanks to some favorable local environmental conditions of the site, several wind-generated sea states with relatively low significant wave height (Hs < 0.50 m) have been collected during the experiment. These sea states are scale models of ocean storms, which are relevant hydrodynamic design conditions for the spar platform. The 30-minutes extreme values of the model structure motions have been estimated for all the six degrees of freedom, using the Weibull Tail Method (WTM), and the results obtained are presented in the paper. Such estimations are 1:30 scale models of the 3-hours extreme values of the spar motions in parked rotor conditions and may be directly used for design purposes.

Wind power has great potential because of its clean and renewable production compared to the traditional power. Most of the present researches for floating wind turbine rely on the hydro-aero-elastic-servo simulation codes and have not been exhaustively validated yet. Thus, model tests are needed and make sense for its high credibility to master the kinetic characters of floating offshore structures. The characters of kinetic responses of the spar-type wind turbine are investigated through model test research technique. This paper describes the methodology for wind/wave model test that carried out at Deepwater Offshore Basin in Shanghai Jiao Tong University at a scale of 1:50. A Spar-type floater was selected to support the wind turbine in this test and the model blade was geometrically scaled down from the original NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine blade. The detail of the scaled model of wind turbine and the floating supporter, the test set-up configuration, the mooring system, the high-quality wind generator that can create required homogeneous and low turbulence wind, and the instrumentations to capture loads, accelerations and 6 DOF motions are described in detail, respectively. The isolated wind/wave effects and the integrated wind-wave effects on the floating wind turbine are analyzed, according to the test results.

Offshore wind turbine is a novel approach in the field of wind energy technology. With the rapid development of coastal wind farms, it is the trend to move them outward to deep-water district. However, the cost of construction rises significantly with the increase in water depth. Floating wind turbine is one of the efficient methods to solve this problem. The early history, current status and cutting-edge improvements of overseas offshore floating wind turbine as well as the shortcomings shall be presented. The concept designs, international standards, fully coupled model simulations and hydrodynamic experiments will be illustrated and discussed together with the development of the theory and the related software modules. Thus a novel researching method and concept shall be presented to provide reference for future researches

In this study, the typical ocean environment was simulated with the aim to investigate the dynamic response under various environmental conditions of a Tension Leg Platform (TLP) type floating offshore wind turbine system. By applying Froude scaling, a scale model with a scale of 1:200 was designed and model experiments were carried out in a lab-scale wave flume that generated regular periodic waves by means of a piston-type wave generator while a wave absorber dissipated wave energy on the other side of the channel. The model was designed and manufactured based on the standard prototype of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 5 MW offshore wind turbine. In the first half of the study, the motion and structural responses for operational wave conditions of the North Sea near Scotland were considered to investigate the performance of a traditional TLP floating wind turbine compared with that of a newly designed TLP with added mooring lines. The new mooring lines were attached with the objective of increasing the horizontal stiffness of the system and thereby reducing the dominant motion of the TLP platform (i.e., the surge motion). The results of surge translational motions were obtained both in the frequency domain, using the response amplitude operator (RAO), and in the time domain, using the omega arithmetic method for the relative velocity. The results obtained show that our suggested concept improves the stability of the platform and reduces the overall motion of the system in all degrees-of-freedom. Moreover, the modified design was verified to enable operation in extreme wave conditions based on real data for a 100-year return period of the Northern Sea of California. The loads applied by the waves on the structure were also measured experimentally using modified Morison equation—the formula most frequently used to estimate wave-induced forces on offshore floating structures. The corresponding results obtained show that the wave loads applied on the new design TLP had less amplitude than the initial model and confirmed the significant contribution of the mooring lines in improving the performance of the system.

In this research, it is developed to design LQG controller for wind turbine systems which are identified with Predictor-Based System Identification (PBSID) technique. The PBSID technique works well under closed-loop condition, which is useful for a system requiring closed-loop operation due to safety reason. First, a wind turbine system is identified using PBSID technique in full range of wind speed. Afterwards, using the identified system matrices, 1-DOF LQG controller is designed. The controller enables power generation to track the optimal power trajectory of a system. Simulation is used to demonstrate its usefulness.
