Abstract The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of metacomposites for acoustic smart lining in grazing turbulent flow. Theoretical and numerical investigations are carried out for designing innovative specimen. A specific focus is placed in the realization of prototypes for evaluating the metacomposite liner performances in 2D and 3D liners, its process complexity and robustness. The insight gain in this project is new tools for obtaining innovative samples; the acoustical experimental tests demonstrate efficiency and robustness of such technology for controlling UHBR noise emission. This paper is focused on parametric study based on the maximization of the absorption coefficient in a duct by optimizing the impedance of a treated area.

In some industrial processes, and especially in agrofood industries, the cleaning in place mechanism used for hydraulic circuits plays an important role. This process needs a good knowledge of the hydrodynamic flows to determinate the appropriate parameters that assure a good cleaning of these circuits without disassembling them. Generally, different arrangements are present in these hydraulic circuits, such as expansions, diffusers, and elbows. The flow crossing these singularities strongly affects the process of cleaning in place. This work is then a contribution to complete recent studies of “aliments quality security” project to ameliorate the quality of the cleaning in place. It presents experimental and numerical investigations of a confined turbulent flow behavior across a conical diffuser (2α=16 deg). The role of a perturbation caused by the presence of an elbow in the test section, upstream of the progressive enlargement, was studied. The main measurements were the static pressure and the instantaneous velocity fields using the particle image velocimetry (PIV). Post-processing of these PIV measurements were adopted using the Γ2 criterion for the vortices detection and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique to extract the most energetic modes contained in the turbulent flow and to the turbulent flow filtering. A database has been also constituted and was used to test the validity of the most models of turbulence, and in particular, a variant of the shear stress transport (SST) model.

The results of a first experimental research program on masonry vaults strengthened by means of GFRP meshes embedded in a thin layer of lime mortar, are herein presented. The tests were designed to reproduce the pattern of a transversal horizontal load proportional to the vault self-weight. The typical simplified loading patterns generally used for the experimental tests concern concentrated vertical loads at the crown section or at 1/4 of the span, but some numerical investigations evidenced that these configurations are not able to reproduce the actual behavior and the effectiveness of the reinforcement. So a specific rig was designed to apply the horizontal load pattern.Solid brick masonry barrel vaults were considered (thickness 120 mm, arch span 4000 mm, arch rise/radius = 0.75). Three quasi-static cyclic tests were performed: the first concerned an unreinforced vault, the second a vault reinforced at the extrados through the application of a mortar coating reinforced with a GFRP mesh and the third reinforced at the intrados surface with the same technique. The experimental results demonstrated the technique effectiveness and the important increment of ductility of the vaults.

This paper is the first part of a two part paper reporting the improvement of efficiency of a one-and-half stage high work axial flow turbine by non-axisymmetric endwall contouring. In this first paper the design of the endwall contours is described and the CFD flow predictions are compared to five-hole-probe measurements. The endwalls have been designed using automatic numerical optimization by means of an Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm, the flow being computed with the 3D RANS solver TRACE. The aim of the design was to reduce the secondary kinetic energy and secondary losses. The experimental results confirm the improvement of turbine efficiency, showing a stage efficiency benefit of 1%±0.4%, revealing that the improvement is underestimated by CFD. The secondary flow and loss have been significantly reduced in the vane, but improvement of the midspan flow is also observed. Mainly this loss reduction in the first row and the more homogeneous flow is responsible for the overall improvement. Numerical investigations indicate that the transition modeling on the airfoil strongly influences the secondary loss predictions. The results confirm that non-axisymmetric endwall profiling is an effective method to improve turbine efficiency, but that further modeling work is needed to achieve a good predictability.

ABSTRACTRaman measurements of temperature reported earlier have been repeated using a doubled Nd: YAG pulse for excitation and an electronically delayed dye laser pulse. These results, together with a variety of experimental tests of the Raman method, confirm the validity of the small temperature rise during pulsed laser annealing. Transmission measurements spanning the visible and near IR show that there exists a thin (∼ 70 nm) layer at the surface in which the induced absorption coefficient is ∼ 7 × 105 cm−1.
