Social Media and Flemish Sports Reporters: A Multimethod Analysis of Twitter Use as Journalistic Tool

Literature states that incorporating social media as a journalistic tool in news reporting generates opportunities for journalists to not only dialogue with the audience but also to publish, to seek information, and to profile themselves or their organizations. This study broadens the empirical data on the journalistic use of social media, more specifically Twitter, by sports journalists in Flanders. A multimethod research approach was used to examine the content of tweets, the followings, and the profiles of the sports journalists. Results show that almost half of the sports journalists have a Twitter account, just over a third of them actively post tweets, and Twitter serves predominantly as an information source to learn more about athletes and their teams. Journalists also publish and communicate on Twitter and to a lesser extent use Twitter to interact with their audience. The study also reveals that Twitter is rarely used as a profiling tool for self-presentation.

Social media is now used as an information source in many different contexts. For professional journalists, the use of social media for news production creates new challenges for the verification process. This article describes the development and evaluation of the ‘Truthmeter’ – a tool that automatically scores the journalistic credibility of social media contributors in order to inform overall credibility assessments. The Truthmeter was evaluated using a three-stage process that used both qualitative and quantitative methods, consisting of (1) obtaining a ground truth, (2) building a description of existing practices and (3) calibration, modification and testing. As a result of the evaluation process, which could be generalized and applied in other contexts, the Truthmeter produced credibility scores that were closely aligned with those of trainee journalists. Substantively, the evaluation also highlighted the importance of ‘relational’ credibility assessments, where credibility may be attributed based on networked connections to other credible contributors.

This research focuses on social media. We were using Social Media in Supporting Tourism Development During Covid-19: Case Study a New Era Policy in Bandung. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods with data sources through the Twitter account of the Bandung City Culture and Tourism Office @DisbudparBdg assisted by the NVivo 12 Plus software. We are utilising Social Media to Support Tourism Development During Covid-19: A Case Study of New Era Policy in Bandung by measuring the use of social media in tourism planning, creation, integration, and marketing strategy. This research shows tourism planning in a new standard era by directing outdoor tourism and implementing health protocols. The Tourism Promotion Board integrates cooperation between the Bandung City Culture and Tourism Office and PT Kereta Api Pariwisata. Tourism marketing by providing tourist information can give tourists confidence that Bandung is an attractive and robust destination city in improving health regulations and strictly following health protocol rules during recreation.

Abstract Social media is the main choice in establishing social interactions in cyberspace in this new media era. The Facebook application as one of the contemporary social media is widely used by Digital natives. As a creative generation in using technology, Digital natives use Facebook as a medium of communication today. Facebook users who are increasing and used continuously have formed a habit that eventually becomes a culture of communication. This research is a qualitative research with a constructivist paradigm that uses a virtual ethnographic research approach. Virtual ethnography is an approach that aims to observe behavior patterns, patterns of life and social relations in virtual life in cyberspace. This study is to determine the communication culture of Digital natives on the use of social media Facebook. Abstrak Media sosial menjadi pilihan utama dalam menjalin interaksi sosial di dunia maya pada era media baru ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis yang menggunakan pendekatan penelitian etnografi virtual. Etnografi virtual merupakan pendekatan yang bertujuan untuk mengamati pola-pola perilaku, pola kehidupan dan relasi sosial dalam kehidupan virtual di dunia maya (cyber) Penelitian ini hendak mengkaji tentang, perubahan dan budaya komunikasi Digital natives pada penggunaan facebook di era media baru, sedangkan Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah Untuk mengetahui budaya komunikasi Digital natives pada penggunaan media sosial facebook. Medical conference organisers have increasingly used social media to improve interaction and learning amongst healthcare professionals. Despite the increasing use of Twitter at critical care conferences, there remains considerable debate as to its impact and ability to generate meaningful discussions beyond the duration of the conference itself. We aim to analyse the trend in Twitter use at international critical care conferences between 2014 and 2017. Fifteen major, international critical care conferences were identified spanning 2014–2017. They represented the annual congresses of the leading critical care professional societies including the first critical care conference to incorporate social media, Social Media and Critical Care. There has been an increased utilisation of social media at all the conferences analysed. This is reflected both in the number of users and the number of tweets. Tweets from the official conference twitter account contribute only a small proportion to the overall number with the exception of the International Fluid Academy. The potential benefits of social media have resulted in a sustained increased in its use at critical care conference between 2014 and 2017. Our analysis provides a better understanding on the use of social media at critical care conference. Further studies are needed to ascertain if this increase in use translates to enhance learning and patient care amongst colleagues.

Political campaigns’ use of digital technologies has been a topic of scholarly concern for over two decades, but most studies have been focused on analyzing the use of digital platforms without considering contextual factors of the race, like public opinion polls. Opinion polls are an important information source for citizens and candidates and provide the latter with information that might drive strategic communication. In this article, we explore the relationship between the use of social media in the 2016 US presidential elections and candidates’ standing in public opinion polls, focusing on the surfacing and primary stages of the campaign. We use automated content analysis to categorize social media posts from all 21 Republican and Democratic candidates. Results indicate that a candidate’s performance in the polls drives certain communicative strategies, such as the use of messages of attacks and advocacy, as well as the focus on personal image.

Background and Objectives There is an increasing use of social media amongst the urological community. However, it is difficult to identify urological data on various social media platforms in an efficient manner. We proposed a hashtag, #UroSoMe, to be used when posting urology-related content in the social media platforms. The objectives of this article are to describe how #UroSoMe was developed, and to report the data of the first month of #UroSoMe.   Material and Methods The hashtag, #UroSoMe, was introduced to the urological community. The #UroSoMe working group was formed, and the members actively invited and encouraged people to use the hashtag #UroSoMe when posting urology-related contents. After the #UroSoMe (@so_uro) platform on twitter had grown to more than 300 users, the first live event of online case discussion, i.e. #LiveCaseDiscussions, was conducted. A prospective observational study of the hashtag #UroSoMe Twitter activity during the first month of its usage from 14 December 2018 to 13 January 2019 was evaluated. Outcome measures included number of users, number of tweets, user location, top tweeters, top hashtags used and interactions. Analysis was performed using NodeXL (Social Media Research Foundation; California, USA; https://www.smrfoundation.org/nodexl/), Symplur (https:// www.symplur.com) and Twitonomy (https://www.twitonomy.com).   Results The first month of #UroSoMe activity documented 1373 tweets/retweets by 1008 tweeters with 17698 mentions and 1003 replies. The #LiveCaseDiscussions was able to achieve a potential reach of 2,033,352 Twitter users. The top tweets mainly included cases presented by #UroSoMe working group members during #LiveCaseDiscussions. The twitonomy map showed participation from 214 geographical locations. The major groups of participants using the hashtag #UroSoMe were ‘Researcher/Academic’ and ‘Doctor’. The twitter account of #UroSoMe (@so_uro) has now grown to more than 1000 followers.   Conclusions Social media is an excellent platform for interaction amongst the urological community. The results demonstrated that #UroSoMe was able to achieve wide spread engagement from all over the world.

Abstract Background Social media platforms have long been recognised as major disseminators of health misinformation. Many previous studies have found a negative association between health-protective behaviours and belief in the specific form of misinformation popularly known as ‘conspiracy theory’. Concerns have arisen regarding the spread of COVID-19 conspiracy theories on social media. Methods Three questionnaire surveys of social media use, conspiracy beliefs and health-protective behaviours with regard to COVID-19 among UK residents were carried out online, one using a self-selecting sample (N = 949) and two using stratified random samples from a recruited panel (N = 2250, N = 2254). Results All three studies found a negative relationship between COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and COVID-19 health-protective behaviours, and a positive relationship between COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and use of social media as a source of information about COVID-19. Studies 2 and 3 also found a negative relationship between COVID-19 health-protective behaviours and use of social media as a source of information, and Study 3 found a positive relationship between health-protective behaviours and use of broadcast media as a source of information. Conclusions When used as an information source, unregulated social media may present a health risk that is partly but not wholly reducible to their role as disseminators of health-related conspiracy beliefs.

Social media has induced substantial growth of various cultural contacts, resulting in a great variation of uses in English. In light of the popularity of new social media, contacts of people from different cultures have been changed from predominant face-to-face encounters to instantaneous communication. This case study examines how Taiwanese students relate their ESL learning experiences to the use of social media and how their uses help transform these ESL students' gender/ethnic identities during study abroad. Adopting an ethnographic research approach, the results suggest some barriers and challenges those ESL students face during the time abroad, both linguistically but also in terms of intercultural friendship. Pedagogical implications and recommendations are made on how to more effectively using social media in developing linguistic and intercultural competence in the context of study abroad.

This chapter discusses the current use of social media for professional growth, focusing on a case study that uses social media to increase instructional design graduate students' awareness and participation in professional growth opportunities. Social media metrics were analyzed from three social networking tools (Facebook Page, Twitter account, and/or Google+ community) that are used to communicate with the students in the program. Additional data was collected using an electronic questionnaire with open and closed-ended questions. The results show that graduate students' participation in the social media initiatives for professional growth provided awareness of self-directed, voluntary, and informal learning opportunities; engaged students in conversations with their peers and the instructors; and allowed the learners to expand their learning experience outside the traditional classroom format.
