Objective: Quality improvement in the healthcare industry has evolved over the past few decades. In recent years, an increased focus on coordination of care efforts and the introduction of health information technology has been of high importance in improving the quality of patient care.Methods: In this review, we present a history of quality improvement efforts, discuss quality improvement in the healthcare industry, and examine quality improvement strategies with a focus on patient-centered care and information technology applications via patient registries.Results: Evidence shows that the key to quality improvement efforts in the healthcare industry is the coordination of patient care efforts through better data evaluation processes. By utilizing patient registries that can be linked to electronic health records (EHRs) and the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) framework, the quality of care provided to patients can be improved.Conclusions: While many healthcare organizations have quality improvement departments or teams in place that may be able to handle these types of efforts, it is important for organizations to be familiar with processes and frameworks that employees at different levels of the organization can be involved in. In order to ensure successful outcomes from quality improvement initiatives, managers and clinicians should work together in identifying problems and developing solutions.

Abstract Objective To systematically review studies assessing the effects of health information technology (health IT) on patient safety outcomes. Materials and Methods The authors employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement methods. MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing Allied Health (CINAHL), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases, from 2001 to June 2012, were searched. Descriptive and comparative studies were included that involved use of health IT in a clinical setting and measured effects on patient safety outcomes. Results Data on setting, subjects, information technology implemented, and type of patient safety outcomes were all abstracted. The quality of the studies was evaluated by 2 independent reviewers (scored from 0 to 10). A total of 69 studies met inclusion criteria. Quality scores ranged from 1 to 9. There were 25 (36%) studies that found benefit of health IT on direct patient safety outcomes for the primary outcome measured, 43 (62%) studies that either had non-significant or mixed findings, and 1 (1%) study for which health IT had a detrimental effect. Neither the quality of the studies nor the rate of randomized control trials performed changed over time. Most studies that demonstrated a positive benefit of health IT on direct patient safety outcomes were inpatient, single-center, and either cohort or observational trials studying clinical decision support or computerized provider order entry. Discussion and Conclusion Many areas of health IT application remain understudied and the majority of studies have non-significant or mixed findings. Our study suggests that larger, higher quality studies need to be conducted, particularly in the long-term care and ambulatory care settings.

Background: Cancer and its management can incur high costs, high risks and high demand. In Indonesia, there remains gap in the availability of national cancer data despite the establishment of a National Committee for Cancer Control. Multiple pilot projects have been developed by the Ministry of Health to improve the delivery of care, including interventions utilising digital health approaches and integrated referral information systems. However, it is not yet clear to what extent these approaches influence patient management or the experience of cancer patients themselves. This research aims to explore the current role of health information technology (HIT) in the provision of services and treatments for patients with cancer from primary to tertiary healthcare centres in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Methods: The study will adopt an observational mixed-methods single case study design of health facilities involved in the delivery of cancer services in a sub-national health system. We will collect data through face-to-face interviews with a range of health professionals involved in the delivery of cancer care. Patients will be interviewed to share their views and experiences of the existing cancer referral system and communication with health facilities. Alongside interviews, we will undertake an analysis of routine data from participating health facilities to assess gaps in existing information systems. Data analysis will include framework analysis for qualitative data alongside descriptive analyses of quantitative data. Findings will be used to inform conceptual maps to be presented as part of Theory of Change workshops focused on understanding how the existing cancer referral system works, why and for whom, with a focus on future refinement and intervention development.  Conclusion: Our findings will inform critical thinking around the design, implementation, adaptation, and evaluation of existing systems. Through early engagement and participation of key stakeholders and project partners, we intend that findings will have immediate utility.

<p><em>People with diabetes mellitus must take responsibility for their own care to improve their quality of life. People with diabetes mellitus often need a set of services and support ranging from glucose monitoring, insulin and other treatment management, psychotherapy and social support, physical activity, nutritional counseling and others. Diabetes mellitus patients can play a more active role in treating their diabetes with health information technology. This literature review uses the PRISMA statement as a guide to search for research articles from two databases, Ebsco and Scopus. The results of the analysis of nine selected research articles indicate that information technology provides patient education and support for patients with diabetes mellitus. Information technology has been used to improve the quality of care for patients with diabetes mellitus, enable health workers to more effectively manage patients and to help patients manage their own illnesses so that research and related publications are needed to improve the care of patients with diabetes mellitus at home.</em></p><p><strong>BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: </strong>Penderita diabetes mellitus harus bertanggung jawab atas perawatan mereka sendiri untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidupnya. Penderita diabetes mellitus seringkali membutuhkan seperangkat layanan dan dukungan mulai dari pemantauan glukosa, insulin dan manajemen pengobatan lainnya, psikoterapi dan dukungan sosial, aktivitas fisik, konseling gizi dan lain-lain. Pasien diabetes mellitus bisa memainkan peran lebih aktif dalam perawatan diabetesnya dengan teknologi informasi kesehatan. Kajian pustaka ini menggunakan <em>PRISMA statement </em>sebagai panduan pencarian artikel penelitian dari dua database yaitu <em>Ebsco</em> dan <em>Scopus. </em>Hasil analisis sembilan artikel penelitian terpilih menunjukkan bahwa teknologi informasi memberikan pasien pendidikan dan dukungan pada pasien diabetes mellitus. Teknologi informasi telah digunakan untuk meningkatkan kualitas asuhan pasien diabetes mellitus,   memungkinkan tenaga kesehatan lebih efektif mengelola pasien dan untuk membantu pasien mengelola sendiri penyakitnya sehingga penelitian dan publikasi terkait diperlukan untuk meningkatkan perawatan pasien diabetes mellitus di rumah.</p>
