BackgroundGlaucoma prevalence and subtype profile vary across different racial and ethnic groups. This study provides a comparative evaluation of differences in aqueous humour dynamics (AHD) and ocular biometrics in healthy Chinese and Caucasian adults of two different age groups.MethodsData from two independent studies with identical designs were compared. Cohorts included young adults (20–30 years old, 32 Chinese and 39 Caucasians) and older adults (>50 years old, 37 Chinese and 46 Caucasians). Parameters of AHD and ocular biometrics were evaluated. Group comparisons were made by generalised estimating equation methods.ResultsDifferences in young adult Caucasians compared with similarly aged Chinese were thinner central cornea (−29.27 µm, p<0.001), lower intraocular pressure (IOP) (−2.33 mm Hg, p<0.001), larger anterior chamber volume (ACV) (28.78 µL, p<0.001) and faster uveoscleral outflow rate (Fu) (0.82 µL/min, p<0.001). Differences in older adult Caucasians compared with similarly aged Chinese were slower aqueous flow rate (Fa) (−0.28 µL/min, p=0.042), lower IOP (−1.97 mm Hg, p<0.001) and larger ACV (33.15 µL, p<0.001). Considering all subjects together by race, Caucasian subjects had slower Fa (−0.22 µL/min, p=0.035), thinner corneas (−0.52 µm, p=0.003), lower IOP (−2.11 mm Hg, p<0.001), higher ACV (30.39 µL, p<0.001) and faster Fu (0.63 µL/min, p<0.001).ConclusionDifferences in AHD and biometrics between Caucasian and Chinese adults include larger ACVs which may contribute to the wider angles reported in Caucasians, and slower Fa rates coupled with faster Fu rates which may contribute to their lower IOP and lower overall risk of glaucoma.

Purpose. To measure the anterior chamber volume (ACV) and determine factors associated with the ACV in healthy Chinese adults.Methods. In this cross-sectional study, we used swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) to measure ACV and other anterior segment parameters. Factors associated with ACV were also determined.Results. A total of 313 healthy Chinese adults were enrolled. The anterior segment parameters, including ACV, could be measured by SS-OCT with excellent repeatability and reproducibility. There was a significant difference between the horizontal and vertical anterior chamber widths (ACW) (P<0.05), with a mean difference of 390 μm. The ACV (mean153.83±32.42 mm3) was correlated with most of the anterior segment parameters, especially anterior chamber depth (ACD), which accounted for about 85% of the variation of ACV. Most of the anterior segment parameters were significantly correlated with age, and the relative changes in ACV and ACD were greatest in subjects aged 41–50 years.Conclusion. ACV was correlated with most of the anterior segment parameters measured in this study, particularly ACD. The relatively large difference between horizontal and vertical ACW suggests that the ACV could and should be measured using multiple OCT scans.

Abstract Background: To investigate the impact of refractive error and corneal parameters on myopic teenagers by using Pentacam and IOL Master 700. Methods: Retrospective observational case series of 505 eyes from 268 children from 7 to 19 years old presenting with myopia. Clinical course, slit lamp photographs and pentacam and IOL Master 700 findings were the main outcomes. Results: Assessment of the tomographic, topographic of corneal parameters of myopic children without any interventions revealed no statistically significant changes in terms of age based on sex. The mean Rf, Rs, K1 and K2 values of anterior and posterior corneal surface were 7.98±0.24mm, 7.73±0.30mm, 42.38±1.86 degrees, 43.55±1.91 degrees, 6.60±0.25mm, 6.21±0.26mm, -6.07±0.23 degrees, -6.42±0.65 degrees. Boys had higher Rf and Rs, but smaller in K1 and K2 than girls (P<0.05) of both anterior and posterior corneal surface. The Anterior chamber volume (ACV) had significant differences between sex (P<0.05). The Rf, K1 of anterior corneal surface did not show significantly different between ages, however, teenagers only in 7 to 9 age group increased significantly than 13 to 15-year-old group (P=0.031). Meanwhile, the Anterior chamber depth (ACD), Anterior chamber volume (ACV), Pupil diameter (PD), Spherical equivalent (SE) and Axial length (AL) had increasingly differenced in different age groups (P=0.002, 0.002, 0.036, 0.044, 0.002, <0.001). Model performance using p< 0.05 parameters as the predictive factors. SE=3.391+0.08×Age+2.307×Rs-0.094×ACD-0.001×ACV-0.951×AL. Conclusions: Our findings may suggest a physiological nature for ocular changes during the development that may elucidate the special points during the process of myopia of adolescents. We also imitate a formula based on our data which may help to evaluate the myopia of children and the prognosis in clinic. Our research conducted retrospectively registered.

Abstract Objective We aimed to investigate differences in and trends of normal calcaneal angles among Han Chinese adults from different age groups to establish normal reference ranges of calcaneal angles in these age groups, thereby providing a theoretical basis and morphological reference for the treatment of calcaneal fractures. Methods We collected lateral plain radiographs (X-ray) of the normal ankle joints of 6,260 Han Chinese adults who visited the Radiology Department of Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital between November 2008 and December 2020 to measure the calcaneal angles, including the Böhler angle (BA), Gissane angle (GA), calcaneal pitch angle (CPA), posterior facet inclination angle (PFIA), and calcaneal-tibial angle (CTA). On this basis, we analyzed the calcaneal angles in different age groups to summarize the characteristics of normal calcaneal angles in Han Chinese adults. Results According to the lateral plain radiographs of the normal ankle joints of 6,260 (male: 3,380; female: 2,880) adults (mean age: 46.3 ± 18.2 ), the mean values of the BA, GA, CPA, PFIA, and CTA were 33.17° ± 6.08°, 114.99° ± 8.17°, 25.67° ± 4.72°, 64.35° ± 8.51°, and 91.59° ± 11.57°, respectively. Results of the Pearson correlation analysis suggested negative correlations between age and both BA and PFIA (P < 0.01, respectively) but a lack of correlation between age and the GA, CPA or CTA (P > 0.05, respectively). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the least significant difference (LSD) test showed that at above the age of 18, there were statistically significant differences both in the BA between different age groups and in the PFIA between different age groups above 41 years old. Conclusion In Han Chinese adults, there are significant differences in BA and PFIA between different age groups, with these calcaneal angles exhibiting a trend of decrease with age.

Aims. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of either hearing, vision or dual sensory impairment on depressive symptoms and to identify subgroups that are vulnerable and significantly affected.Methods.Data from the 2006–2014 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) were used and a total of 5832 individuals were included in this study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D10) scale. Sensory impairment was assessed according to the levels of self-reported hearing or vision, which were categorised as either good (excellent, very good or good) or poor (fair or poor). The changes in hearing or vision from records of previous survey were investigated. Changes from good to poor, which indicates new onset, were defined as hearing impairment or vision impairment. Interactions of changes in hearing and vision were considered in the analysis. Dual sensory impairment was indicated when hearing impairment and vision impairment both developed at the same time. Demographic, socioeconomic and health-related factors were considered as potential confounders and were adjusted for in the generalised estimating equation model.Results.Individuals with hearing impairment demonstrated significantly more severe depressive symptoms [β = 0.434, standard errors (s.e.) = 0.097, p < 0.001] than those who had good hearing. Those with vision impairment also showed significantly elevated depressive symptoms (β = 0.253, s.e. = 0.058, p < 0.001) than those with good vision. When the interactions between hearing and vision were considered, participants with dual sensory impairment showed significantly more severe depressive symptoms (β = 0.768, s.e. = 0.197, p < 0.001) than those with good hearing and vision. The effect of a single and dual sensory impairment on depressive symptoms was significant in both sexes and across age groups, except for vision impairment in male participants.Conclusions.Hearing, vision and dual sensory impairment are significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that treatment or rehabilitation of either hearing or vision impairment would help prevent depression.

Abstract Background:We aimed to evaluate the association between alcohol consumption and risk of cancer incidence among rural Chinese adults. Methods: We utilized data from a community-based cohort study in rural China enrolled in 2003 and followed up prospectively up to 2018. Generalized estimating equation models were used to obtain odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and cancer incidence. Results: After an average of 15 years of follow-up, a total of 9870 adult participants were included in this study. The results of the regression analysis for males showed that former drinkers had a significantly increased risk of cancer compared to never drinkers ([OR]2.46,95%[CI](1.43-4.23)). The cancer risk for current drinkers with heavy alcohol consumption(>400g/week) significantly increased ([OR]1.66,95% [CI] (1.18-2.34))compared to never drinkers. Among current drinkers, for every 100g of alcohol consumed per week, the risk of cancer increased by 15%. Among current drinkers, those aged 53.5 years or older , had a significant increase in the risk of cancer ([OR]1.26,95% [CI](1.12-1.42), for those with triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL, the risk of cancer was even higher ([OR]1.50,95%[CI](1.20-1.88), P for interaction 0.018), and for those with high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC)<40 mg/dL, the risk of cancer increased the greatest ([OR]2.03,95%[CI](1.36-3.04), P for interaction 0.005). Conclusions: Among middle-aged and elderly males in rural China, the risk of cancer significantly increased among former and heavy current drinkers compared with never drinkers. Age, triglycerides, and HDLC may increase the risk of cancer along with alcohol consumption.

To establish the age- and sex-related normative values of sagittal alignment in asymptomatic Chinese adults, and to investigate the changes and possible associated compensation mechanisms across age groups. 584 asymptomatic Chinese adults aged 20–89 years were recruited. Subjects were grouped according to age and gender. Whole-body standing radiographs were acquired for evaluating sagittal alignment from spine to lower limb. Sagittal parameters between gender in different age groups were compared via independent t test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to demonstrate relationships between parameters. Thoracic kyphosis (TK) increased steadily while lumbar lordosis decreased gradually in both genders. Pelvic tilt (PT) in male is greater than in female across all age groups with age related gradual increase. There were significant differences between male and female from 20s to 60s in terms of knee flexion angle (KA) and ankle dorsiflexion angle (AA), but the differences were not significant after 60s. T1 pelvic angle (TPA) was significantly correlated with spinal, pelvic and lower-limb alignment. The older group (≥50 years) had a stronger correlation of TPA with PT and KA, whereas the younger (<50 years) had stronger correlation with TK. This study comprehensively presented the normative sagittal alignment based on a large asymptomatic population, which could serve as an age- and gender-specific reference value for spine surgeons when planning for correction surgery. Age can influence the recruitment of compensation mechanism that involve more pelvic and lower limb mechanisms for elderly people.

AimsTo determine the association between albuminuria and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).MethodsParticipants of the Singapore Chinese Eye study were recruited and underwent standardised ocular and systemic examinations. Albuminuria was determined using urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR, mg/g) based on random spot urinary albumin and creatinine measurements. POAG was defined using the International Society of Geographic and Epidemiological Ophthalmology classification. Multivariable logistic regression with generalised estimating equation model was used to evaluate the association between albuminuria and POAG, while accounting for correlation between eyes.ResultsA total of 3009 Chinese adults (5963 eyes), aged 40–80 years, were included in this study, of which, 52 subjects (75 eyes) had POAG. Higher UACR (per 50 mg/g increase) was independently associated with POAG (OR=1.04, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.07, p=0.003) following adjustment for age, gender, intraocular pressure, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, anti-hypertensive medication, history of cardiovascular disease, current smoking status, alcohol intake, body mass index and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Further stratification revealed that individuals with macroalbuminuria were 8.00 times likely to have POAG (95% CI 2.97 to 21.54, p<0.001), compared with those with normoalbuminuria. Microalbuminuria was not significantly associated with POAG (OR=0.49, 95% CI 0.19 to 1.29, p=0.150). The association between macroalbuminuria and POAG remained significant among individuals who were diabetic (OR=9.89, 95% CI 2.49 to 39.30, p=0.001) and hypertensive (OR=8.39, 95% CI 3.07 to 22.94, p<0.001).ConclusionIn this population-based study of Chinese adults, albuminuria was independently associated with POAG. Our findings provide further understanding on the pathogenesis of POAG and may potentially help to better identify individuals at risk of POAG.
