Rileya nov. gen. (Coelomycetes) is characterized by thick-walled plectenchymatous pycnidia, hypha-like, branched conidiophores, and holoblastic, distoseptate conidia with a simple apical appendage produced holoblastically from the inner wall. A single species, R. piceae, is described from Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. in coastal British Columbia, Canada.

Vanterpoolia, a new genus of sporodochial hyphomycetes, is erected for a fungus occurring on necrotic, newly flushed needles of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) in coastal British Columbia, Canada. The genus is characterized by triradiate conidia or rodlike, appendaged conidia produced in acropetal chains from simple, septate conidiophores arising from a pseudoparenchymatous stroma. A single species, Vanterpoolia tsugae n.sp., is described.

Sirococcus blight, caused by Sirococcus strobilinus Preuss, was shown to be a seed-borne disease of container-grown Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr., P. glauca (Moench) Voss, P. engelmannii Parry, and P. glauca × P. engelmannii spruces. The fungus was best detected by germinating seeds from seedlots with consistent disease histories, in autoclaved soil mix in pots (kept at 16 to 20 °C, and at light intensities of 900 to 1800 lx), and isolating the pathogen from diseased seedlings. Seed-borne isolates of S. strobilinus were pathogenic to P. sitchensis seedlings. The pathogen was present on 0.3 to 3.1% of the seeds of infested seedlots. Seeds with shrunken contents yielded the pathogen seven to nine times more often than seeds with normal-appearing contents. Disease incidence was unrelated to seedcoat damage or prevalence of empty seeds. Histological examinations revealed presence of the pathogen throughout the endosperm and embryo tissues of diseased seeds. The results are discussed in relation to incidence of Sirococcus blight in Coastal, container nurseries.

Tree-ring studies using increment cores have increasingly measured elemental (N) and isotopic (δ15N) nitrogen values to evaluate environmental changes in the nitrogen cycle. The paucity of nitrogen in wood has constrained tree-ring analyses to annual resolution. Based on 77 rings and 310 sub-rings, we provide evidence for substantial intra-annual variability in N and δ15N values in the heartwood of 11 geographically widely separated, old growth Sitka spruce [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carrière] trees from coastal British Columbia. The range of N and δ15N values within rings (intra-annual level) was on average equal to or up to seven-times the range among rings (inter-annual level). Most rings showed a seasonal reduction in N values from early to late growth and a corresponding increase to the early growth of the following season (P < 0.05 to 0.001, Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test). By contrast, intra-annual changes in δ15N values were highly variable among years and among trees, ranging from pronounced oscillations (4.0‰) to reasonable consistency. Our results allude to the potential importance of such intra-ring data for interpreting seasonal trends in nitrogen use and increasing understanding of ecological processes in the marine–terrestrial interface.

We compared height growth and nutrition (foliar nutrient concentrations and retranslocation rates from 1-year-old needles) of second-growth plantations on imperfectly drained, lower productivity cedar–hemlock–salal forests with those of more productive ecosystems of north coastal British Columbia. Soils ranged from deep organic profiles to well-drained mineral soils derived from igneous to metamorphic bedrock. Leader increments on imperfectly drained sites were smaller than on well-drained sites, averaging 42% less for western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), 56% less for Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carrière), and 32% less for western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don). Strong linear correlations were found between leader increment and foliar N, P, and S concentrations for all three tree species, and baseline foliar data for productive sites were presented. The foliar N ratios with P, S, and K were consistent across sites and indicated that many key foliar nutrients increased proportionally to the availability of N. A comparison of nutrient concentrations between current and 1-year-old foliage generally showed little difference on poorer sites, which suggested that there had been no retranslocation of nutrients from young needles within trees to compensate for low soil nutrient availability. This study confirmed the inherently low productivity of cedar-hemlock-salal forests, especially on granodiorite and gneissic diorite bedrock types, and suggested the need for site treatments or long rotations for sustainable management.

Manure-N availability must be known in order to design application practices that maximize the nutrient value of the manure while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. This study determined the effect of time and rate of liquid manure application on silage corn yield and N utilization, and residual soil nitrate at harvest, in south coastal British Columbia. Liquid dairy or liquid hog manure was applied at target rates of 0, 175, 350 or 525 kg N ha−1, with or without addition of 100 kg N ha−1 as inorganic fertilizer, at two sites in each of 2 yr. Time of liquid-dairy-manure application was also tested at two sites in each of 2 yr with N-application treatments of: 600 kg N ha−1 as manure applied in spring; 600 kg N ha−1 as manure applied in fall; 300 kg N ha−1 as manure applied in each of spring and fall; 200 kg N ha−1 applied as inorganic fertilizer in spring; 300 kg N ha−1 as manure plus 100 kg N ha−1 as inorganic fertilizer applied in spring; and a control that received no applied N. Fall-applied manure did not increase corn yield or N uptake in the following growing season. At all sites, maximum yield was attained using manure only. Selection of proper spring application rates for manure and inorganic fertilizer were found to be equally important in minimizing residual soil nitrate at harvest. Apparent recovery of applied N in the crop ranged from 0 to 33% for manure and from 18 to 93% for inorganic fertilizer. Key words: N recovery, manure management

The highly deformed section at Open Bay is one of the few good exposures of a thick sedimentary unit within the prebatholithic rocks along coastal British Columbia. It provides new structural information relating to emplacement of a part of the Coast Range batholith and it contains an important Upper Triassic fauna unusually well represented. Structural and paleontological analyses are mutually supporting and are purposely combined in one paper.Thirteen ammonite genera from 14 localities clearly substantiate McLearn's tentative assignment to the Tropites subbullatus zone (Upper Karnian) and suggest a restriction to the T. dilleri subzone as defined in northern California.Contrary to an earlier view, the beds are lithologically similar across the whole bay except for variations in the intensity of deformation and thermal alteration. Their contact with slightly older relatively undeformed flows is apparently a zone of dislocation. Stratigraphic thicknesses cannot be measured with confidence, and subdivision into "Marble Bay Formation" and "Open Bay Group" cannot be accepted. Open Bay Formation is redefined to include all the folded marble and interbedded pillow lava at Open Bay. Lithologic and biostratigraphic correlation is suggested with the lower middle part of the Quatsino Formation on Iron River, 24 miles to the southwest. Basalt flows and pillowed volcanics west of Open Bay are correlated with the Texada Formation within the Karmutsen Group.The predominant folding is shown to precede, accompany, and follow intrusion of numerous andesitic pods and to precede emplacement of quartz diorite of the batholith. Structural asymmetry is shown to have originated through gentle cross-folding and emplacement of minor intrusives during deformation.

This paper addresses the academic conversation on Protestant missions to the Indigenous peoples of coastal British Columbia during the second half of the nineteenth century through a consideration of the role of revivalist piety in the conversion of some of the better known Indigenous Methodist evangelists identified in the scholarly literature. The paper introduces the work of existing scholars critically illuminating the reasons (religious convergence and/or the want of symbolic and material resources) typically given for Indigenous, namely, Ts’msyen, conversion. It also introduces Methodist revivalist piety and its instantiation in British Columbia. And, finally, it offers a critical exploration of revivalist piety and its role in conversion as set within a broader theoretical inquiry into the academic study of ritual and religion.
