Validity and composition of the Silurian trilobite genera Borealarges and Dicranogmus, with new species from the Canadian Arctic

New silicified material from Arctic Canada demonstrates that the lichid trilobite genera Borealarges and Dicranogmus, recently claimed to be synonyms, are independent groups with no close phylogenetic connection to one another. Dicranogmus has been known mainly from cranidia alone; prior association of librigenae and pygidia with the Arctic Canadian species D. skinneri has been queried. This association is correct beyond reasonable doubt, based on description of new material of both D. skinneri and a new species. Three new species of Borealarges are related to B. tuckerae Adrain 1994. Cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of this species group. Pending further new information, however, the group is retained within the genus Borealarges. The stratigraphic range of the species group is extended from the lower Wenlock (Sheinwoodian) to upper Ludlow (Ludfordian) by the discovery of a rare species in the Douro Formation of Cornwallis Island, Arctic Canada. New taxa from the Wenlock of the Cape Phillips Formation, Arctic Canada, include Dicranogmus wynni, Borealarges nicoae, B. warholi, and B. yulei.

Cladistic analysis of the trilobite subfamily Acanthoparyphinae Whittington and Evitt, 1954, yields an explicit hypothesis of relationship for the group. All Silurian species together form a robustly supported monophylum including the genera Hyrokybe Lane, 1972, Parayoungia Chatterton and Perry, 1984, and Youngia Lindström, 1885. Sister to this is the Ordovician type species of Acanthoparypha Whittington and Evitt, 1954. Remaining species that have historically been assigned to either Acanthoparypha or Pandaspinapyga Esker and Levin, 1964, form a rather labile paraphylum. Nevertheless, the entire group thus identified is definitely monophyletic, and supported by several prominent synapomorphic character-states.The basal structure and basal node of the subfamily are more difficult to assess. The relationships of the genera Hammannopyge Přibyl, Vaněk, and Pek, 1985, Holia Bradley, 1930, and Nieszkowskia Schmidt, 1881, need to be addressed within the wider context of the family as a whole. The traditional assignment of Holia to the acanthoparyphines is followed.Wenlock acanthoparyphines from the Cape Phillips Formation of the central Canadian Arctic islands include several species of Hyrokybe and Parayoungia. They are similar to, and in one case conspecific with, coeval forms to the southwest in the southern Mackenzie Mountains.Five species are new: Holia glabra, Hyrokybe lightfooti, Hyrokybe youngi, Hyrokybe mitchellae, and Parayoungia mclaughlini. At least four other potentially new species are reported in open nomenclature.

Radnoria bretti n. sp., from the Wenlock (Sheinwoodian) Rochester Formation of western New York State, is the best preserved and most completely known member of its genus. It provides the first definitive information on Radnoria's hourglass-shaped rostral plate, the first known hypostome of a Silurian member of the genus, demonstrates that Radnoria engaged in sphaeroidal enrollment, and reveals that early holaspid individuals had tubercles on the posterior thoracic axes and pygidial axial rings that were effaced with maturity. Three new species from the Wenlock of the Cape Phillips Formation of Nunavut are known from sparse material and are reported in open nomenclature. Together, the species greatly increase knowledge of Laurentian Silurian brachymetopids, which have until now been known from a single cranidium from the Wenlock of Arkansas.

Abstract The fauna of bristletails of the genus Lepismachilis Verhoeff, 1910 in Montenegro and Serbia includes only one species L. (Berlesilis) targionii (Grassi, 1887) with 2 + 2 eversible vesicles on abdominal urocoxites II–VI. Three new species of this genus are described: L. (Lepismachilis) prijepolja sp. nov., L. (Lepismachilis) limensa sp. nov. from Serbia, and L. (Lepismachilis) alexandrae sp. nov. from Montenegro. All described new species belong to the species group of the subgenus Lepismachilis s. str. with 2 + 2 eversible vesicles on abdominal urocoxites II–V. Lepismachilis prijepolja sp. nov. differs from L. y-signata Kratochvíl, 1945 and L. notata Stach, 1919 by the color, drawings and ratios of the compound eyes; ratios of sensory field on fore femur of male, number of divisions of ovipositor. Lepismachilis limensa sp. nov. differs from L. hauseri Bitsch, 1974 and L. abchasica Kaplin, 2017 by ratios of paired ocelli, sensory field on fore femur of male; ratios and chaetotaxy of maxillary and labial palps. Lepismachilis alexandrae sp. nov. differs from L. abchasica by the drawings of the compound eyes; ratios of paired ocelli, sensory field on fore femur of male; number of divisions of the parameres and gonapophyses. A list of the Machilidae occurring in Balkan Peninsula is also provided.

Three new species of Anaulacomera are described, Anaulacomera (Anaulacomera) mariellae sp. n. and Anaulacomera (Anallomes) arlindoi sp. n., belonging respectively to the Inermis and Lanceolata species group, and Anaulacomera angelinae sp. n., placed as incertae sedis. The individuals were collected at the Iguaçu National Park and adjacent small fragments of Atlantic Forest, in southwestern Paraná state, Brazil. The description was based on external morphology of males. We also present distribution maps for the species of the Inermis and the Lanceolata species groups.

A taxonomic revision of the flea beetle genus <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> Jacoby, endemic to Madagascar, is provided. This genus includes seven species of which three are new to science: <em>D. elegans</em> sp. n., <em>D. jenisi</em> sp. n., and <em>D. nigroscutis</em> sp. n. An updated catalogue including new material, new faunistic records, distributions, chorotypes, and ecological notes is supplied. Lectotypes for <em>Diphaulacosoma</em> <em>laevipenne</em> Jacoby, <em>D. bicolor</em> (Weise) and <em>D. scutellare</em> (Weise) are designated. Additionally, the revision comprises a key for the identification of all seven species considered, habitus photos, and microscope and scanning electron micrographs of diagnostic characters, including aedeagus and spermatheca.

The study is based on new material from the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden (RNHM) and the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) and addresses issues in two genera: Epeus Peckham & Peckham, 1886 and Ptocasius Simon, 1885 from Thailand. Both genera are of Asian/Indomalayan origin, the latter with a diversity hotspot in the subtropical valleys of the Himalayas. Based on morphological data, we propose three new species of Epeus (Epeus daiqini sp. nov. (♂♀), Epeus pallidus sp. nov. (♀), Epeus szirakii sp. nov. (♀)) and two new species of Ptacasius (Ptocasius metzneri sp. nov. (♂♀) and Ptocasius sakaerat sp. nov. (♀)). Additionally, we redescribed E. tener (Simon, 1877) and added photographs of morphological characters. The genus Ptocasius is redefined due to the inclusion of 37 species, previously included in Yaginumaella Prószyński, 1979. Relationships and distribution of both genera are discussed in reference to molecular, morphological and distributional data, published by other authors in recent years.

The monotypic tachinid genus Opsozelia Townsend, 1919 (Diptera: Tachinidae) is synonymized with ZeliaRobineau-Desvoidy 1830, syn. nov. The single species of Opsozelia, O. discalis Townsend, 1919, is redescribed as Zelia discalis, comb. nov., based on examination of the holotype from Guyana and additional material from Suriname, Brazil and Paraguay. Three new species of Zelia similar to Z. discalis are described from Brazil: Z. magnasp. nov., Z. guimaraesisp. nov. and Z. formosasp. nov. These four species are treated informally as the Zelia discalis species group. An identification key to the species of this species group is provided based on male specimens. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the male terminalia of all species and for the female terminalia of one species, Z. guimaraesi.
