Paleomagnetism of the Little Dal lavas, Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada

The Proterozoic stratigraphic column of the Mackenzie Mountains is dominated by two main successions, the platformal "Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup" beneath, and the Windermere-equivalent Rapitan Group and younger strata, of rift-depression and slope origin, above. The former succession is at least partly older than 770 Ma, the latter younger than 770 Ma. These two main successions are locally separated by an unconformity-bounded succession, the "copper cycle." An important question is whether the copper cycle is more closely related in time and in origin to the older or the younger main succession. Determination of the paleomagnetism of the basaltic lavas locally preserved at the top of the Little Dal Group (top of the Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup) and comparison of their remanence directions with those published for other rocks bearing on the question were thought to be one way of shedding light on this question. Accordingly, paleomagnetic investigation of 10 sites in the Keele River area and six sites in the Thundercloud Range area was undertaken to obtain the remanence direction related to the initial extrusion of the lavas. Coherent directional groupings were only obtained from Little Dal lavas in the Keele River area. Of the three magnetizations found, LD-L (D = 304°, I = 20°, α95 = 7°) is assumed to represent the magnetization acquired on crystallization of the lavas. If this assumption is correct, the significant difference from the direction LD-A (D = 265°, I = 26°, α95 = 4°) reported elsewhere for strata low in the Little Dal Group suggests either that the lavas significantly postdate the group or that significant movement of the North American plate occurred during accumulation of the 2 km or so of platformal strata between the lower Little Dal beds and the lavas. The new results presented here also admit the conclusion that the Little Dal lavas do not represent the same igneous events as diabase intrusions dated at about 770 Ma that cut the lower Little Dal.

Background: Statins have been considered as therapy for children with coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) after Kawasaki disease (KD), due to potential beneficial pleiotropic effects which might influence chronic vascular processes and inflammation. Methods: The North American Kawasaki Disease Registry was queried to identify patients who have received statins in the first 6 months following the convalescent phase of KD. Each identified patient was matched by age, gender and CAA z score to 3 patients who were statin-naïve (controls). Linear regression models adjusted for repeated measures and maximum coronary involvement were used to determine an association of statin use with longitudinal changes in coronary artery diameter z-score. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare freedom from angiographically-confirmed stenosis or interventions. Results: Of 29 patients with KD and CAA (maximum coronary artery z-score >10) who received statins at any time (of n=621, 5%), 10 (9 males) patients were started within 6 months of the acute KD episode. The mean age at KD was 6.3±3.4 years (5.4±3.5 for controls, p=0.57). Mean maximum CAA z-score was 36±14 (vs. 29±16, p=0.20); 90% of statin patients and 87% of matched controls had CAAs in 3 or more branches. Linear regression analysis of 442 serial echocardiograms showed that maximum CAA z-score decreased by -1.5 (95%CI: -2.7; -0.4) SD/year (p=0.008) for control patients compared to -2.9 (95%CI: -4.4; -1.4) SD/year (p<0.001) for statin treated patients. The difference between the rate of change of CAA z-score for statin vs. control patients did not reach statistical significance (controls vs. statins: +1.4 SD/year, 95%CI: -0.6; +3.4, p=0.18). n=7 patients (3 on statin, 4 controls) developed stenosis or had revascularization, with no significant difference between groups (HR for statin group: 2.2 (0.4-11.4), p=0.41). Conclusions: This underpowered pilot study suggests that equipoise likely exists with regards to statin therapy in children with KD and CAA, and that a formal registry-nested trial might be considered.

The systematic position of the genus Massalongia and the closely related genera Koerberia, Vestergrenopsis, and Placynthium in the family Peltigeraceae including lichens with hemiangiocarpic apothecia is discussed. The ontogeny of a hemiangiocarpic apothecium is described briefly. A key for the determination of the genera is provided.A general survey is given for the morphology and anatomy of the genus Massalongia. The two species, M. carnosa and M. microphylliza, are described in detail. The new combination M. microphylliza is made.

Paleomagnetic results from 55 sampling sites throughout the Stark Formation are reported. The known stratigraphic sequence of these sites enables the behaviour of the geomagnetic field in these remote times (1750 m.y.) to be elucidated. Two polarity reversals are identified and these represent potentially useful correlative features in strata devoid of index fossils. One of these is investigated in detail and indicates that behaviour of the geomagnetic field during polarity reversals was essentially the same in the early Proterozoic as it has been over the last few million years. The pole position (145°W, 15°S, dp = 3.5, dm = 6.9) lies far to the west of that anticipated from earlier results, implying further complexity of the North American polar wander curve. Possible alternatives to this added complexity are discussed.

ABSTRACT Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) is being discovered in a widening array of geologic environments. The complex geology of the state of California is an excellent example of the variety of geologic environments and rock types that contain NOA. Notably, the majority of California rocks were emplaced during a continental collision of eastward-subducting oceanic and island arc terranes (Pacific and Farallon plates) with the westward continental margin of the North American plate between 65 and 150 MY BP. This collision and accompanying accretion of oceanic and island arc material from the Pacific plate onto the North American plate, as well as the thermal events caused by emplacement of the large volcanic belt that became today's Sierra Nevada mountain range, are the principal processes that produced the rocks where the majority of NOA-bearing units have been identified.

Fifteen species of Late Permian bryozoans occur in a biohermal bank in the Mission Argillite of northeastern Washington. These include two species conspecific with species described from Japan and 13 new species, one of which is the type species of a new genus. The presence of two species, Dyscritella iwaizakiensis Sakagami, 1961, and Hayasakapora cf. erectoradiata Sakagami, 1960, previously reported from Japan, and the similarity of new species with those previously described from Japan, China and Russia supports the idea that these rocks were originally deposited in the southeastern or central western Pacific Ocean and subsequently accreted to the North American Plate.Bryozoans and previously reported fusulinids indicate that the biohermal bank is latest Wordian (Kazanian).Newly described bryozoans include the new genus and type species Sakagamiina easternensis belonging to the Timanodictyidae. Other new species are Fistuliramus pacificus, Meekoporella inflecta, Neoeridotrypella missionensis, Coeloclemis urhausenii, Tabulipora colvillensis, Rhombotrypella kettlensis, Pamirella oculus, Pinegopora petita, Wjatkella nanea, Alternifenestella vagrantia, Polypora arbusca, and Mackinneyella stylettia.
