Age, Growth, Food, and Yield of the White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) of the Fraser River, British Columbia

For white sturgeon taken incidentally in the salmon gillnet fishery in the Fraser River during the summer of 1962, pectoral fin ray sections indicated that over three-quarters were fish aged 9–16 years. Gillnets for salmon apparently select sturgeon over a size range between 30 and 60 inches. Back-calculation of size attained at previous ages indicated that after attaining a length close to 20 inches by age 5, the sturgeon grow about 2 inches per year to about age 25. Limited data from pectoral fin ray sections suggest that age at first spawning is from 11 to 22 years for males, and from 11 to 34 for females. Subsequent spawning is apparently at intervals of 4–9 years. Fraser River sturgeon are more piscivorous than has been recorded for white sturgeon and other sturgeon species elsewhere, about one-half of the stomachs containing fish, especially eulachons. The age distribution in the catch, though biased by selection, was used to estimate rates of natural and fishing mortality. The eumetric fishing curve suggests that present yield could be increased by a greater size at first capture, particularly if the natural mortality rate is as low as 0.05. The history of the sturgeon fishery suggest that sustainable yield could exceed 100,000 lb per year. The commercial landings in recent years average 30,000–40,000 lb. The sport fishery may take an additional 20,000–30,000 lb. Sustained yield in the circumstances of the present fishery could be 80,000 lb per year, about 25% more than the present catch. Some recommendations are made for management, stressing the importance of protection of an annual spawning population of 300–600 females.

Laser ablation sampling - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LAS-ICP-MS) was an effective technique for the comparison of relative Sr concentrations in the opaque growth zones (annuli) in the fin rays of white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). Three of 29 Fraser River white sturgeon (10.3% of the sample) showed significantly higher Sr fin ray concentrations in at least one annulus compared with the remainder of the fin ray, and this was interpreted as evidence of marine migrations. Eleven other individual fish had significantly higher mean Sr concentrations in their first 15 annuli compared with annuli 16-30 but lower than the concentrations of the three putative diadromous fish, and this was interpreted as evidence of time spent in the estuary. Eight Fraser River fish greater than 15 years old showed no significant increase in fin ray Sr concentations in the first 15 annuli, and Sr concentrations remained below 350 ppm throughout their lives. These individuals were considered likely to have spent most of their lives in a freshwater environment. Based on the evidence in this study, it is probable that the majority of white sturgeon in the lower Fraser River are not diadromous, but many spend extended periods of time in the Fraser River estuary as juveniles.

Abstract The primary goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of using early life stages of white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) (eggs, larvae and fry) as a species relevant to the Fraser River, B.C., for the acute and sublethal toxico-logical testing of forest industry effluents. Here we report the first successful acute toxicity tests for 8-day-old larvae and 42-day-old fry exposed to several chemicals known to be released into the Fraser River (i.e., 6 monochlorovanillin [6 MVAN], 4,5 dichloroguaiacol [4,5 DCG], 4,5 dichlorocatechol [4,5 DCAT], pentachlorophenol [PCP], and didecyldimethylammonium chloride [DDAC]). In most cases, white sturgeon fry were at the lower end of the range for acute toxicity values for chlorinated phenolic compounds, when compared with other juvenile fish species, and they were extremely sensitive to DDAC. The larval stage was usually more sensitive than the fry stage. Acute toxicity tests with fertilized eggs were unsuccessful. A postexposure growth study was inconclusive because neither control nor toxicant-exposed larvae and fry withstood the additional handling used for measuring body mass. At 62-days-old, fry were more tolerant of handling. This allowed measurement of their swimming performance. Although we have concerns about the reliability of using larvae for acute toxicity testing at this time, 60-day-old white sturgeon fry would appear to be both a sensitive and relevant species for assessing environmental impacts relevant to the Fraser River.

Abstract Comparison of the levels of nucleotide diversity in humans and apes may provide much insight into the mechanisms of maintenance of DNA polymorphism and the demographic history of these organisms. In the past, abundant mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphism data indicated that nucleotide diversity (π) is more than threefold higher in chimpanzees than in humans. Furthermore, it has recently been claimed, on the basis of limited data, that this is also true for nuclear DNA. In this study we sequenced 50 noncoding, nonrepetitive DNA segments randomly chosen from the nuclear genome in 9 bonobos and 17 chimpanzees. Surprisingly, the π value for bonobos is only 0.078%, even somewhat lower than that (0.088%) for humans for the same 50 segments. The π values are 0.092, 0.130, and 0.082% for East, Central, and West African chimpanzees, respectively, and 0.132% for all chimpanzees. These values are similar to or at most only 1.5 times higher than that for humans. The much larger difference in mtDNA diversity than in nuclear DNA diversity between humans and chimpanzees is puzzling. We speculate that it is due mainly to a reduction in effective population size (Ne) in the human lineage after the human-chimpanzee divergence, because a reduction in Ne has a stronger effect on mtDNA diversity than on nuclear DNA diversity.

SUMMARYCharacterization of the incubation time from infection to onset is important for understanding the natural history of infectious diseases. Attempts to estimate the incubation time distribution for novel A(H1N1v) have been, up to now, based on limited data or peculiar samples. We characterized this distribution for a generic group of symptomatic cases using laboratory-confirmed swine influenza case-information. Estimates of the incubation distribution for the pandemic influenza were derived through parametric time-to-event analyses of data on onset of symptoms and exposure dates, accounting for interval censoring. We estimated a mean of about 1·6–1·7 days with a standard deviation of 2 days for the incubation time distribution in those who became symptomatic after infection with the A(H1N1v) virus strain. Separate analyses for the <15 years and ⩾15 years age groups showed a significant (P<0·02) difference with a longer mean incubation time in the older age group.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and toxicity of the herbal supplement PC-Spes in prostate cancer patients. METHODS: Literature search through MEDLINE (1966–October 2001), PubMed, and abstracts from the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (1995–2001). RESULTS: PC-Spes was associated with biochemical and clinical response in some prostate cancer patients. The mechanisms of action of PC-Spes appeared to be related to its estrogenic activity. CONCLUSIONS: PC-Spes is associated with some efficacy in prostate cancer patients. Due to the limited data available, it should not be used to replace standard androgen suppression therapy in androgen-dependent patients. PC-Spes may have a role for patients who have failed standard treatments for androgen-independent disease and have no history of thromboembolism or abnormal bleeding. PC-Spes has a toxicity profile similar to those of androgen suppression and estrogen therapy.

Congenital cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in children. Lens opacity in early life has the potential to cause permanent visual impairment if not treated promptly. Cataract surgery performed at the right time can prevent children from amblyopia (lazy eye). This study aims to determine the characteristics of congenital cataracts at the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial General Hospital in the 2018-2019 period. This research uses descriptive method. The data used is secondary data from medical records of congenital cataract patients at the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial General Hospital in the 2018-2019 period. In the 2018-2019 period, 40 children had congenital cataracts. Most of the cataract sufferers were women (52.5%); living outside the city of Mataram (92.5%) with an age distribution of under 12 months (95%) and the rest over 12 months. For infants under 12 months, 53 percent have been diagnosing at the age of 1-2 months. The characteristics of congenital cataracts found were generally bilateral (52.5%), had standard birth weight (52.5%), history of natural birth delivery (67.5%), and had other extraocular congenital abnormalities (72.5%). Most patients with congenital cataracts in the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial General Hospital have been diagnosing at a (pretty/moderately) early age of 1-2 months at the beginning of their lives. So, with appropriate and prompt therapy, hoping that it can reduce the risk of amblyopia.

The scorpionfish Scorpaena decemradiata n. sp. is described from off the coast of Israel in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea. The new species is similar to S. porcus Linnaeus, 1758, but is characterized by dorsal fin spines XII, soft dorsal fin rays 10 (the last divided at base); pectoral fin rays 16, uppermost branched pectoral fin ray is the second; lacrimal with 2 spines over maxilla that point at nearly right angle from each other, the posterior pointing ventrally and slightly anteriorly; occipital pit well developed; anteriormost mandibular lateral-line pores small, separated; scales ctenoid; 59-62 scale rows in longitudinal series; scales absent on chest and pectoral fin base; and cirri developed over entire head and body, but no cirri on lower jaw. An updated checklist of the species of the genus Scorpaena Linnaeus, 1758 and a key to the species of the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea are presented.

The postglacial history of vegetation in the Yale area of the lower Fraser River Canyon is described from sediments of two lakes using percentage pollen analysis supplemented with macrofossil evidence and radiocarbon dating. Deposition of postglacial sediments, ranging from basal clays to gyttjas, began about 11 500 y B.P. Three distinct pollen assemblage zones are distinguished, reflecting in part the main climatic conditions for the intervals. The oldest zone, with high percentages of pine (Pinus) and alder (Alnus) pollen, suggests cool and moist conditions following withdrawal of glacial ice. This is followed by marked increases in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga), grasses and other nonarboreal pollen, suggesting in part, warmer and drier conditions. The third zone, ranging from about the Mt. Mazama ash at 6600 y B.P. to the present, is marked by high alder and Douglas-fir, and increasing cedar (Thuja-Chamaecyparis type), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), fir (Abies) and birch; an assemblage indicating a return to wetter conditions. This sequence contrasts with previously described successions that recognized the classical Hypsithermal in adjacent areas. The sequence of inferred vegetational changes, although similar to those described for the Haney area to the west, suggests that the Yale area has been a biogeoclimatically transitional area for much of postglacial time.
