Acute High-Intensity Interval Training Improves Tvent and Peak Power Output in Highly Trained Males

This study examined the effects of four high-intensity interval-training (HIT) sessions performed over 2 weeks on peak volume of oxygen uptake [Formula: see text] the first and second ventilatory thresholds (VT1, VT2) and peak power output (PPO) in highly trained cyclists. Fourteen highly trained male cyclists [Formula: see text] performed a ramped cycle test to determine [Formula: see text]VT1, VT2, and PPO. Subjects were divided equally into a HIT group and a control group. The HIT group performed four HIT sessions (20 × 60 s at PPO, 120 s recovery); the [Formula: see text] test was repeated < 1 wk after the HIT program. Control subjects maintained their regular training program and were reassessed under the same timeline. There was no change in [Formula: see text] for either group; however, the HIT group showed a significantly greater increase in VT1 (+22% vs. −3%), VT2 (+15% vs. −1%), and PPO (+4.3 vs. −4%) compared to controls (all P < .05). This study has demonstrated that HIT can improve VT1, VT2 and PPO, following only four HIT sessions in already highly trained cyclists. Background: Low- and moderate-intensity exercise training has been shown to be effective for reducing general anxiety and anxiety sensitivity among adults with asthma. Exercise frequency and intensity have been shown to play an integral role in reducing anxiety sensitivity; however, less is known about the impact of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on anxiety in adults with asthma. Methods: A 6-week HIIT intervention was conducted with adults with asthma. Participants completed HIIT (10% peak power output for 1 min, 90% peak power output for 1 min, repeated 10 times) 3 times per week on a cycle ergometer. Preintervention and postintervention assessments included the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 and the Body Sensations Questionnaire. Results: Total Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (PRE: 17.9 [11.8]; POST 12.4 [13], P = .002, Cohen d = 0.4, n = 20) and Body Sensations Questionnaire (PRE: 2.4 [1.0]; POST: 2.0 [0.8], P = .007, Cohen d = 0.3) improved from preintervention to postintervention. Conclusion: A 6-week HIIT intervention leads to improved anxiety among adults with asthma. Future research should determine the impact of HIIT among adults with asthma with clinical anxiety.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the benefit of using high-intensity interval training for cardiovascular patients undergoing outpatient rehabilitation in a standard short-term (three-week) program in Germany. Design: This is a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Setting: This study was conducted at Cardiowell (Wuppertal, Germany), an outpatient rehabilitation center. Intervention: Patients underwent the typical three-week German outpatient rehabilitation program using either moderate continuous training (i.e. the standard training program) or high-intensity interval training. Main measures: A total of 50 patients of an outpatient rehabilitation center were randomized into two groups. The control group underwent the standard rehabilitation protocol that applied moderate continuous training, and the intervention group trained according to a high-intensity interval protocol. Patients trained on a bicycle ergometer. Peak power output, oxygen uptake parameters, heart frequencies, and blood pressure were compared at the beginning and at the end of the rehabilitation program. Results: After three weeks, the intervention group had improved to a significantly greater extent in maximal performance parameters than the control group: the peak power output (20.9 (±14.1) W; control 8.8 (±10.4) W), maximum oxygen uptake (0.33 (±0.33) L/min; control 0.05 (±0.29) L/min)), relative maximum oxygen uptake (3.4 (±4.2) mL/kg/min; control 0.9 (±3.1) mL/kg/min), and O2 pulse (1.8 (±2.2) mL/heart beat; control 0.35 (±1.7) mL/heart beat). Conclusion: The implementation of high-intensity interval training during a typical three-week German cardiac rehabilitation has the power to increase the outcome for the patients.

High intensity interval training is frequently implemented using the 4 × 4 protocol where four 4-min bouts are performed at heart rate (HR) between 85 and 95% HR max. This study identified the HR and power output response to the 4 × 4 protocol in 39 active men and women (age and VO2 max = 26.0 ± 6.1 years and 37.0 ± 5.4 mL/kg/min). Initially, participants completed incremental cycling to assess VO2 max, HR max, and peak power output (PPO). They subsequently completed the 4 × 4 protocol, during which HR and power output were monitored. Data showed that 12.9 ± 0.4 min of 16 min were spent between 85 and 95% HR max, with time spent significantly lower in interval 1 (2.7 ± 0.6 min) versus intervals 2–4 (3.4 ± 0.4 min, 3.4 ± 0.3 min, and 3.5 ± 0.3 min, d = 2.4–2.7). Power output was highest in interval 1 (75% PPO) and significantly declined in intervals 2–4 (63 to 54% PPO, d = 0.7–1.0). To enhance time spent between 85 and 95% HR max for persons with higher fitness, we recommend immediate allocation of supramaximal intensities in interval one.

Purpose. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training on anaerobic capacity in taekwondo athletes. Materials and methods. The study recruited 20 male International Taekwondo Federation-style practitioners that were randomly divided into an experimental (n=10) and a control (n=10) group. The control group (C) executed a regular training protocol (five 90-min sessions per week) involving traditional TKD methods and techniques for 8 weeks. During the same timeframe, the experimental group (E) followed the same TKD training regime as group C except two of the five sessions were substituted with interval training-based TKD exercise involving 30 s of maximal kicking drills (round middle kick) separated by 90 s of rest. Anaerobic capacity and power were measured pre- and post-training by the 30-s Wingate cycle ergometer test. Results. Post-training values of peak power, total work output, and time of sustained peak power increased only in group E. Group E was also characterized by a significant post-training increase in minute ventilation (VE) and blood lactate (LA-). No significant changes were observed in group C. Connlusions. The inclusion of interval training-based exercise significantly enhanced anaerobic power and capacity in taekwondo practitioners.

Abstract Background Interventricular interactions in increased RV afterload such as hypoxia stress, which affects both synchrony and function in an in-series effect as well as a parallel effect arising from leftward septal shift. Improved myocardial contractility is a critical circulatory adaptation to exercise training, however, the types of exercise that can improve interventricular synchrony under hypoxic environment have not yet been established. Purpose This study investigates how high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) influence on the interventricular synchrony in response to normobaric hypoxia in sedentary men. Methods Fifty-four sedentary males were randomized to perform HIIT (3-minute intervals at 40% and 80% VO2peak, n=18), MICT (sustained 60% VO2peak, n=18) for 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week for 6 weeks and the control group (CTL, n=18). Synchrony measurements at apical 4-chamber view including (1) intra-delay, the difference in time to peak strain (TS) between segmental septal-to-lateral ventricular or atrial walls, and (2) inter-delay, the difference in TS between RV or RA free wall and LV or LA lateral wall. The data were acquired by 2-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography at rest under hypoxic condition (12% FIO2, simulated an altitude of 4,500 m) before and after the interventions. Results HIIT had significantly elevated radial and longitudinal strains in both LA and LV (p&lt;0.05). As the results showed, HIIT was superior than MICT in improvement of longitudinal intra-delay of LV; furthermore, only HIIT simultaneously ameliorated both radial and longitudinal synchrony at apex. Although the HIIT enhanced intraventricular synchrony in both motions, whereas the interventricular synchrony deteriorated at radial motion. In atrium synchrony, although both groups augmented the intra-LA synchrony, however, only HIIT reduced the inter-delay between LA and RA at the roof motion. LV end-systolic volume (ESV) significantly correlated with the longitudinal inter-delay of ventricle (r=−0.53, p&lt;0.05), whereas the LV end-diastolic volume (EDV) correlated with the inter-delay of atrium in roof motion (r=0.40, p&lt;0.05). Conclusion We found differences between HIIT and MICT in segmental intra- and inter- synchrony. HIIT enhanced both ventricular or atrial synchrony, and further increased the EDV coupled with decreased ESV. These findings give new insight into cardiac adaptation to difference endurance training and the long-term impact of such changes warrants future study in cardiac diseases. The ability to process goal-related visual information while ignoring goal-irrelevant information is essential for the human attention system. The study aimed to investigate how perceptual–cognitive performance was affected during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) using a 3D-multiple object tracking (3D-MOT) task called Neurotracker (NT). In an experimental design, 42 healthy adults (age M = 23.3 SD = 2.94, VO2max 52.8 ± 5.66 mL·kg−1·min−1) were randomly assigned to an intervention (HIIT + NT, NT, HIIT) or control group. NT performance (20 trials per session) was measured pre-and post-test (at 5, 15, and 25 min while running on the treadmill). The participants trained twice a week for a 4-week intervention period. There was a significant interaction effect between pre/post-test and groups regarding perceptual-cognitive performance, indicating similar enhancements in the HIIT + NT and the NT group during exercise. HIIT influences physical fitness but did not show any impact on perceptual–cognitive performance. Due to the specific NT task characteristics, improved physical abilities may not directly impact sport-specific perceptual-cognitive performance. Our findings suggest that training resulted in substantial task-specific gains. Therefore, combination training may be proposed as a training program to improve perceptual–cognitive, and physical performance in a time-efficient way.

<b>Objective:</b> To study the effect of 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on glycemic control in adults with type 1 diabetes with overweight or obesity. <p> </p> <p><b>Research Design and Methods:</b> Thirty inactive adults with type 1 diabetes who had BMI≥25kg/m<sup>2</sup> and HbA1c≥7.5% were randomized to 12 weeks of either: HIIT exercise intervention consisting of 4x4 minutes HIIT (85-95% HRpeak) performed thrice weekly, or usual care control. In a partial cross-over design, the control group subsequently performed the 12-week HIIT intervention. The primary endpoint was the change in HbA1c from baseline to 12 weeks. Glycemic and cardiometabolic outcomes were measured at 0, 12, and 24 weeks.</p> <p> </p> <p><b>Results:</b> Participants were aged 44±10 years, with diabetes duration 19±11 years, and BMI 30.1±3.1 kg/m<sup>2</sup>.<sup> </sup>HbA1c decreased from 8.63 ± 0.66% at baseline to 8.10 ± 1.04% at 12 weeks in the HIIT intervention group (p=0.01), however this change was not significantly different to the control group (HIIT -0.53 ± 0.61%, control -0.14 ± 0.48%, p=0.08). In participants who undertook at least 50% of the prescribed HIIT intervention, the HbA1c reduction was significantly greater than control (HIIT -0.64 ± 0.64% (n=9), control -0.14 ± 0.48% (n=15), p=0.04). There were no differences in insulin dose, hypoglycemia on continuous glucose monitoring, blood pressure, blood lipids, body weight or body composition between groups. </p> <p> </p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> <a>Overall, there was no significant reduction in HbA1c with a 12-week HIIT intervention in adults with type 1 diabetes. However glycaemic control may improve for people who undertake HIIT with greater adherence.</a></p>
