The use of near-infrared spectroscopy could be an interesting alternative to other invasive or expensive methods to estimate the second lactate threshold. Our objective was to compare the intensities of the muscle oxygen saturation breakpoint obtained with the Humon Hex and the second lactate threshold in elite cyclists. Ninety cyclists performed a maximal graded exercise test. Blood capillary lactate was obtained at the end of steps and muscle oxygenation was continuously monitored. There were no differences (p>0.05) between muscle oxygen oxygenation breakpoint and second lactate threshold neither in power nor in heart rate, nor when these values were relativized as a percentage of maximal aerobic power or maximum heart rate. There were also no differences when men and women were studied separately. Both methods showed a highly correlation in power (r=0.914), percentage of maximal aerobic power (r=0.752), heart rate (r=0.955), and percentage of maximum heart rate (r=0.903). Bland-Altman resulted in a mean difference of 0.05±0.27 W·kg–1, 0.91±4.93%, 0.63±3.25 bpm, and 0.32±1.69% for power, percentage of maximal aerobic power, heart rate and percentage of maximum heart rate respectively. These findings suggest that Humon may be a non-invasive and low-cost alternative to estimate the second lactate threshold intensity in elite cyclists.

Citrulline (CIT) and nitrate-rich beetroot extract (BR) are ergogenic aids and nitric oxide (NO) precursors. In addition, both supplements seem to have other actions at the level of muscle metabolism that can benefit strength and aerobic power performance. Both supplements have been studied in numerous investigations in isolation. However, scientific evidence combining both supplements is scarce, and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no current study of endurance athletes. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 9 weeks of CIT plus BR supplementation on maximal and endurance-strength performance and aerobic power in male triathletes. This study was a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial where participants (n = 32) were randomized into four different groups: placebo group (PLG; n = 8), CIT plus BR group (CIT- BRG; 3 g/kg/day of CIT plus 3 mg/kg/day of nitrates (NO3−); n = 8), CIT group (CITG; 3 g/kg/day; n = 8) and BR group (BRG; 3 mg/kg/day of NO3−; n = 8). Before (T1) and after 9 weeks (T2), four physical condition tests were carried out in order to assess sport performance: the horizontal jump test (HJUMP), handgrip dynamometer test, 1-min abdominal tests (1-MAT) and finally, the Cooper test. Although, no significant interactions (time × supplementation groups) were found for the strength tests (p > 0.05), the CIT- BRG supplementation presented a trend on HJUMP and 1-MAT tests confirmed by significant increase between two study moments in CIT-BRG. Likewise, CIT-BRG presented significant interactions in the aerobic power test confirmed by this group’s improve estimated VO2max during the study with respect to the other study groups (p = 0.002; η2p = 0.418). In summary, supplementing with 3 g/day of CIT and 2.1 g/day of BR (300 mg/day of NO3−) for 9 weeks could increase maximal and endurance strength. Furthermore, when compared to CIT or BR supplementation alone, this combination improved performance in tests related to aerobic power.

Objective: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by an excessive mass of adipose tissue in the body. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between different genotypes of VEGF gene and changes in aerobic capacity following aerobic exercise in obese women. Materials and Methods: In this study, 23 inactive women aged 34 to 43 years with BMI 30 and 35 were purposefully selected and participated in eight weeks of aerobic exercise including 4 sessions per week and 30 minutes per session with an intensity of 55 to 75% of maximum heart rate. Before and after the training period, aerobic power (VO2max) was measured by the modified Bruce test. Saliva Sample was collected at 12 hours of fasting to measure VEGF genotypes. To compare aerobic capacity between different genotypes, since we had three genotypes GG, CG, and CC, one-way analysis of variance was used. Results: Although the mean amount of aerobic power changes of GG genotype was somewhat higher after eight weeks of aerobic training than the other two genotypes, this difference was not significant. (P-value= 0.663, P-value= 0.873 and P-value= 0.173, respectively). Conclusion: Eight weeks of aerobic training leads to increased aerobic capacity in obese women and increased VEGF plays a role, but there is not seemingly a difference between different VEGF genotypes for these changes. In any case, since this study was conducted for the first time, we need more studies to draw a more accurate conclusion.

Abstract Background The impact of vitamin D on musculoskeletal health is well-established, although its influence on physical performance is unclear. Therefore, we conducted this study to evaluate the impact of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) concentrations with maximal aerobic power of professional indoor athletes. Results A total of 112 male professional athletes were included in this cross-sectional study, consisting of 88 handball and 24 ice hockey players. The maximal aerobic power was assessed with a standardized cycling ergometer test. Athletes were assigned to two groups according to their 25-OH vitamin D status: insufficient (< 30 ng/mL) and sufficient (≥ 30 ng/mL). Thirty-four players (30.4%) displayed insufficient (21.9 ± 5.9 ng/mL) and 78 (69.6%) sufficient 25-OH vitamin D concentrations (41.6 ± 8.6 ng/mL). Athletes with sufficient levels achieved a higher maximal aerobic power (3.9 ± 0.9 vs. 3.5 ± 0.8 W/kg, p = 0.03) compared to those with insufficient levels. Conclusions There is a high prevalence of 25-OH vitamin D insufficiency in professional indoor athletes, even in summer. Insufficient 25-OH vitamin D concentrations were associated with lower maximal aerobic power in male professional indoor athletes. Further, the 25-OH vitamin D concentration was identified as the only independent predictor of maximal aerobic power in these athletes, highlighting the impact of 25-OH vitamin D on physical performance. Therefore, 25-OH vitamin D concentrations of ≥ 30 ng/mL should be maintained to ensure optimal physical performance in these athletes.

Background: The influence of high altitude on an organism’s physiology depends on the length and the level of hypoxic exposure it experiences. This study aimed to determine the effect of a prolonged sojourn at very high altitudes (above 3,500m) on subsequent sea-level physical performance, body weight, body composition, and hematological parameters.Materials and Methods: Ten alpinists, nine males and one female, with a mean age of 27±4years, participated in the study. All had been on mountaineering expeditions to 7,000m peaks, where they spent 30±1days above 3,500m with their average sojourn at 4,900±60m. Their aerobic and anaerobic performance, body weight, body composition, and hematological parameters were examined at an altitude of 100m within 7days before the expeditions and 7days after they descended below 3,500m.Results: We found a significant (p&lt;0.01) decrease in maximal anaerobic power (MAPWAnT) from 9.9±1.3 to 9.2±1.3W·kg−1, total anaerobic work from 248.1±23.8 to 228.1±20.1J·kg−1, anaerobic threshold from 39.3±8.0 to 27.8±5.6 mlO2·kg−1·min−1, body fat mass from 14.0±3.1 to 11.5±3.3%, and a significant increase (p&lt;0.05) in maximal tidal volume from 3.2 [3.0–3.2] to 3.5 [3.3–3.9] L after their sojourn at very high attitude. We found no significant changes in maximal aerobic power, maximal oxygen uptake, body weight, fat-free mass, total body water, hemoglobin, and hematocrit.Conclusion: A month-long exposure to very high altitude led to impaired sea-level anaerobic performance and anaerobic threshold, increased maximal tidal volume, and depleted body fat mass, but had no effect on maximal aerobic power, maximal oxygen uptake, or hemoglobin and hematocrit levels.

This study random cohort study is examined the effects of beta-alanine supplementation on aerobic and anaerobic power output in specific cyclists. Therefore, we have been databases PubMed, Scopus, and Medline initial search 10 August 2020 were created prospective effect the quality of bias work concluded Effect Size (ES) 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were used in the participant. Participants (N=66) have an age range of 25 to 38 of the using beta-alanine in training periods to endurance muscle performance, aerobic power, anaerobic power, and sprint time trials. As a result of beta-alanine improved anaerobic and aerobic power output on 4-week time-dependent trial performance condition. Significant values are obtained level factor-alpha <0.05 and p-value analysis pre-post interactive standardization.

There was an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome by SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 in China. The virus spread quickly throughout the world, including in Indonesia. The government has taken many steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19, namely the Stay at Home phase, the Large-Scale Social Restrictions phase, and the New Normal phase. The entire process has affected sports by imposing Training from Home (TFH) for 14 national male athletes and 11 female national athletes for rowing in preparation for the Asia Cup. The athletes' seriousness in exercising for seven weeks was shown from recorded data during the New Normal. The purpose of this research is to see the effect of TFH on athlete detraining. The absence of specific research related to this is a novelty in this study. The method used is quasi-experimental, by looking at the athletes' seriousness in doing the exercises independently without direct assistance from the coach. The coaches could only assist online. The instrument used met the standards of validity and reliability of conformity. It was expected that the athletes' performance did not decrease as they entered the next stage of training. The results showed no significant effect of TFH on detraining in the components of Muscle Power, Aerobic Power, Capacity Squat, Deadlift, and Bench Pull in the men's group. In the women's group, there was a significant effect of TFH on detraining in Muscle Power and Women's Aerobic Capacity, and there was an insignificant effect of TFH on detraining in the components of Aerobic Power, Squat, Deadlift, and Bench Pull. This study concludes that TFH has different effects on detraining elite rowing athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
