Abstract We revisit moduli stabilisation for type IIB flux compactifications that include a warped throat region corresponding to a warped deformed conifold, with an anti-D3-brane sitting at its tip. The warping induces a coupling between the conifold’s deformation modulus and the bulk volume modulus in the Kähler potential. Previous works have studied the scalar potential assuming a strong warping such that this coupling term dominates, and found that the anti-D3-brane uplift may destabilise the conifold modulus and/or volume modulus, unless flux numbers within the throat are large, which makes tadpole cancellation a challenge. We explore the regime of parameter space corresponding to a weakly-but-still warped throat, such that the coupling between the conifold and volume moduli is subdominant. We thus discover a new metastable de Sitter solution within the four-dimensional effective field theory. We discuss the position of this de Sitter vacuum in the string theory landscape and swampland.

Abstract We present a detailed analysis of the eclectic flavor structure of the two-dimensional ℤ2 orbifold with its two unconstrained moduli T and U as well as SL(2, ℤ)T× SL(2, ℤ)U modular symmetry. This provides a thorough understanding of mirror symmetry as well as the R-symmetries that appear as a consequence of the automorphy factors of modular transformations. It leads to a complete picture of local flavor unification in the (T, U) modulus landscape. In view of applications towards the flavor structure of particle physics models, we are led to top-down constructions with high predictive power. The first reason is the very limited availability of flavor representations of twisted matter fields as well as their (fixed) modular weights. This is followed by severe restrictions from traditional and (finite) modular flavor symmetries, mirror symmetry, $$ \mathcal{CP} $$ CP and R-symmetries on the superpotential and Kähler potential of the theory.

Abstract We discuss fermion mass hierarchies within modular invariant flavour models. We analyse the neighbourhood of the self-dual point τ = i, where modular invariant theories possess a residual Z4 invariance. In this region the breaking of Z4 can be fully described by the spurion ϵ ≈ τ − i, that flips its sign under Z4. Degeneracies or vanishing eigenvalues of fermion mass matrices, forced by the Z4 symmetry at τ = i, are removed by slightly deviating from the self-dual point. Relevant mass ratios are controlled by powers of |ϵ|. We present examples where this mechanism is a key ingredient to successfully implement an hierarchical spectrum in the lepton sector, even in the presence of a non-minimal Kähler potential.

We study the free energy of four-dimensional CFTs on deformed spheres. For generic nonsupersymmetric CFTs only the coefficient of the logarithmic divergence in the free energy is physical, which is an extremum for the round sphere. We then specialize to N=2N=2 SCFTs where one can preserve some supersymmetry on a compact manifold by turning on appropriate background fields. For deformations of the round sphere the cc anomaly receives corrections proportional to the supersymmetric completion of the (Weyl)^22 term, which we determine up to one constant by analyzing the scale dependence of various correlators in the stress-tensor multiplet. We further show that the double derivative of the free energy with respect to the marginal couplings is proportional to the two-point function of the bottom components of the marginal chiral multiplet placed at the two poles of the deformed sphere. We then use anomaly considerations and counter-terms to parametrize the finite part of the free energy which makes manifest its dependence on the Kähler potential. We demonstrate these results for a theory with a vector multiplet and a massless adjoint hypermultiplet using results from localization. Finally, by choosing a special value of the hypermultiplet mass where the free energy is independent of the deformation, we derive an infinite number of constraints between various integrated correlators in N=4N=4 super Yang-Mills with any gauge group and at all values of the coupling, extending previous results.

Abstract We study M-theory compactified on twisted 7-tori with G2-holonomy. The effective 4d supergravity has 7 chiral multiplets, each with a unit logarithmic Kähler potential. We propose octonion, Fano plane based superpotentials, codifying the error correcting Hamming (4, 7) code. The corresponding 7-moduli models have Minkowski vacua with one flat direction. We also propose superpotentials based on octonions/error correcting codes for Minkowski vacua models with two flat directions. We update phenomenological α-attractor models of inflation with 3α = 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 1, based on inflation along these flat directions. These inflationary models reproduce the benchmark targets for detecting B-modes, predicting 7 different values of $$ r=12\alpha /{N}_e^2 $$ r = 12 α / N e 2 in the range 10−2 ≳ r ≳ 10−3, to be explored by future cosmological observations.

This is a sequel to our earlier paper presenting a supersymmetric Nambu–Jona–Lasinio (NJL)-type model for a real superfield composite. The model in the simplest version has only a chiral superfield (multiplet), with a strong four-superfield interaction in the Kähler potential that induces a real two-superfield composite with vacuum condensate. The latter can have supersymmetry breaking parts, which we have shown to bear nontrivial solutions under a standard nonperturbative analysis for a Nambu–Jona–Lasinio-type model on a superfield setting. In this article, we generalize our earlier analysis by allowing a supersymmetric mass term for the chiral superfield, as well as possible θ2 components for the soft supersymmetry breaking part of the condensate. We present admissible nontrivial vacuum solutions and an analysis of the resulted low energy effective theory with components of the composite becoming dynamical. The determinant of the fermionic modes is shown to be zero, illustrating the presence of the expected Goldstino.

Abstract In this work we study type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of space-time filling D7-branes and O7-planes. In particular, we conclude that α′2gs-corrections to their DBI actions lead to a modification of the four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 Kähler potential and coordinates. We focus on the one-modulus case of the geometric background i.e. h1,1 = 1 where we find that the α′2gs-correction is of topological nature. It depends on the first Chern form of the four-cycle of the Calabi-Yau orientifold which is wrapped by the D7-branes and O7-plane. This is in agreement with our previous F-theory analysis and provides further evidence for a potential breaking of the no-scale structure at order α′2gs. Corrected background solutions for the dilaton, the warp-factor as well as the internal space metric are derived. Additionally, we briefly discuss α′-corrections from other Dp-branes.

Abstract We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an SU(3) × Spin(6 + n) structure within O(6, 6 + n) × ℝ+ generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines a natural Hitchin functional for heterotic geometries. Intriguingly, this formulation suggests new connections to geometric invariant theory and an extended notion of stability. Finally we show that the analysis of infinitesimal deformations of these geometric structures naturally reproduces the known cohomologies that count the massless moduli of supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds.

Abstract We build on the results of [1] for generalised frame fields on generalised quotient spaces and study integrable deformations for ℂPn. In particular we show how, when the target space of the Principal Chiral Model is a complex projective space, a two-parameter deformation can be introduced in principle. The second parameter can however be removed via a diffeomorphism, which we construct explicitly, in accordance with the results stemming from a thorough integrability analysis we carry out. We also elucidate how the deformed target space can be seen as an instance of generalised Kähler, or equivalently bi-Hermitian, geometry. In this respect, we find the generic form of the pure spinors for ℂPn and the explicit expression for the generalised Kähler potential for n = 1, 2.
