DESIGN STRATEGY OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL PRINTED CAGES TO REDUCE IMPACT-INDUCED DEBRIS ALONG THE LOAD-TRANSFERRING PATH

Peri-implant debris certainly lead to osteolysis, necrosis, pseudotumor formation, tissue granulation, fibrous capsule contractions, and even implant failure. For the three-dimensional (3D) printed cage, impaction during cage insertion is one of the most potential sources of fracture debris. A finite-element study was carried out to reduce the impact-induced debris of the 3D-printed cage. This study focused on the design strategy of solid and cellular structures along the load-transferring path. Using the finite-element method, the cellular structure of the transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) cage was systematically modified in the following four variations: a noncellular cage (NC), a fully cellular (FC) cage, a solid cage with a cellular structure in the middle concave (MC) zone, and a strengthened cage (SC) in the MC zone. Three comparison indices were considered: the stresses at the cage-instrument interfaces, in the MC zone, and along the specific load-transferring path. The NC and FC were the least and most highly stressed variations at the cage-instrument interfaces and in the MC zone, respectively. Along the entirely load-transferring path, the FC was still the most highly stressed variation. It showed a higher risk of stress fracture for the FC cage. For the MC and SC, the MC zone was consistently more stressed than the directly impacted zone. The further strengthened design of the SC had a lower peak stress (approximately 29.2%) in the MC zone compared with the MC. Prior to 3D printing, the load-transferring path from the cage-instrument interfaces to the cage-tissue interfaces should be determined. The cage-instrument interfaces should be printed as a solid structure to avoid impact-induced fracture. The other stress-concentrated zones should be cautiously designed to optimize the coexistence strategy of the solid and cellular structures.

Oblique impact of a slider with a rotating disk in hard disk drives was analyzed using the finite element method. A three dimensional, thermomechanical, impact model was developed to study the mechanical and thermal response during the impact of a spherical slider corner with the disk. The model was validated by comparing finite element results with analytical solutions for homogeneous glass disk under simple conditions. Impact penetration, stress and incurred flash temperature were obtained for various normal impact velocities.

Abstract BackgroundThe biomechanics of calcaneus impacted by the talus are unclear. We aimed to evaluate the biomechanical effect of the talus impacting on the calcaneus at different falling speed, and analyze the factors affecting calcaneal fracture.Methods A finite element model including the talus, calcaneus and ligaments was built using a variety of three-dimensional reconstruction software. The method of explicit dynamics was used to analyze the process of the talus impacting the calcaneus. Stress values of the posterior, middle, and anterior subtalar articular surface(PSAS, ISAS, ASAS), the calcaneocubic articular surface(CAS), the bottom of the calcaneus(BC), the medial wall (MW)and lateral wall (LW) of the calcaneus were extracted. Stress quantity and distribution changes in various parts of the calcaneus changed with speed were analyzed.ResultsPosterior subtalar articular surface reached the peak stress first during the process of talus impacting the calcaneus. The stress was mainly concentrated on the PSAS, ASAS, MW and GA. Comparing with the speed of 5m/s, the average maximum stress increased in each region of the calcaneus were: PSAS 73.81%, ISAS 7.11%, ASAS 63.57%, GA 89.10%, LW 140.16%, CAS 140.58%, BC 137.67%, MW 135.99% at a speed of 10m/s. The regions where the stress were concentrated changed, and the magnitude and sequence of stress peaks of calcaneus changed with speed also during the impact.Conclusion The falling speed affected the value and distribution of stress of the calcaneus, which was the most important factor leading to a calcaneal fracture. The magnitude and sequence of stress peaks might be important factors in determining the beginning and direction of fracture lines.

Rehabilitation with implant prostheses in posterior areas requires the maximum number of possible implants due to the greater masticatory load of the region. However, the necessary minimum requirements are not always present in full. This project analyzed the minimum principal stresses (TMiP, representative of the compressive stress) to the friable structures, specifically the vestibular face of the cortical bone and the vestibular and internal/lingual face of the medullary bone. The experimental groups were as follows: the regular splinted group (GR), with a conventional infrastructure on 3 regular-length Morse taper implants (4 × 11 mm); and the regular pontic group (GP), with a pontic infrastructure on 2 regular-length Morse taper implants (4 × 11 mm). The results showed that the TMiP of the cortical and medullary bones were greater for the GP in regions surrounding the implants (especially in the cervical and apical areas of the same region) but they did not reach bone damage levels, at least under the loads applied in this study. It was concluded that greater stress observed in the GP demonstrates greater fragility with this modality of rehabilitation; this should draw the professional's attention to possible biomechanical implications. Whenever possible, professionals should give preference to use of a greater number of implants in the rehabilitation system, with a focus on preserving the supporting tissue with the generation of less intense stresses.

Abstract The paper describes the intention of the authors to determine whether it is possible to predict relative belt edge endurance for radial passenger car tires using the finite element method. Three groups of tires with different belt edge configurations were tested on a fleet test in an attempt to validate predictions from the finite element results. A two-dimensional, axisymmetric finite element analysis was first used to determine if the results from such an analysis, with emphasis on the shear deformations between the belts, could be used to predict a relative ranking for belt edge endurance. It is shown that such an analysis can lead to erroneous conclusions. A three-dimensional analysis in which tires are modeled under free rotation and static vertical loading was performed next. This approach resulted in an improvement in the quality of the correlations. The differences in the predicted values of various stress analysis parameters for the three belt edge configurations are studied and their implication on predicting belt edge endurance is discussed.

AbstractThe objective of this work lies in the three-dimensional study of the thermo mechanical behavior of a blade of a centrifugal compressor. Numerical modeling is performed on the computational code "ABAQUS" based on the finite element method. The aim is to study the impact of the change of types of blades, which are defined as a function of wheel output angle β2, on the stress fields and displacements coupled with the variation of the temperature.This coupling defines in a realistic way the thermo mechanical behavior of the blade where one can note the important concentrations of stresses and displacements in the different zones of its complex form as well as the effects at the edges. It will then be possible to prevent damage and cracks in the blades of the centrifugal compressor leading to its failure which can be caused by the thermal or mechanical fatigue of the material with which the wheel is manufactured.

This research paper reviews the test results involving viscoelastic properties of cellular structure models made with the PolyJet Matrix—PJM additive technology. The designed test specimens were of complex cellular structure and made of three various photo-curable polymer resin types. Materials were selected taking into account the so-called “soft” and “tough” material groups. Compressive stress relaxation tests were conducted in accordance with the recommendations of standard ISO 3384, and the impact of the geometric structure shape and material selection on viscoelastic properties, as well as the most favorable geometric variants of the tested cellular structure models were determined. Mathematica and Origin software was used to conduct a statistical analysis of the test results and determine five-parameter functions approximating relaxation curves. The most favorable rheological was adopted and its mean parameters determined, which enables to match both printed model materials and their geometry in the future, to make a component with a specific rheological response. Furthermore, the test results indicated that there was a possibility of modelling cellular structures within the PJM technology, using support material as well.

Current design procedures for complicated three-dimensional structural components with component interactions may not necessarily result in optimum designs. The wrist pin end design of the connecting rod with an interference fit is governed by the stress singularity in the region where the wrist pin breaks contact with the connecting rod. Similar problems occur in a wide variety of structural components which involve interference fits. For a better understanding of the problems associated with obtaining optimum designs for this important class of structural interaction only the design problems associated with the wrist pin end of the rod are addressed in this study. This paper demonstrates a procedure for designing a functional and minimum weight wrist pin end of an automobile engine connecting rod with an interference fit wrist pin. Current procedures for Finite Element Method (FEM) model generation in complicated three-dimensional components are very time consuming especially in the presence of stress singularities. Furthermore the iterative nature of the design process makes the process of developing an optimum design very expensive. This design procedure uses a generic modeler to generate the FEM model based on the values of the design variables. It uses the NASTRAN finite element program for structural analysis. A stress concentration factor approach is used to obtain realistic stresses in the region of the stress singularity. For optimization, the approximate optimization strategy in the COPES/CONMIN program is used to generate an approximate design surface, determine the design sensitivities for constrained function minimization and obtain the optimum design. This proposed design strategy is fully automated and requires only an initial design to generate the optimum design. It does not require analysis code modifications to compute the design sensitivities and requires very few costly NASTRAN analyses. The connecting rod design problem was solved as an eight design variable problem with five constraints. A weight reduction of nearly 27 percent was achieved over an existing design and required only thirteen NASTRAN analyses. It is felt that this design strategy can be effectively used in an engineering environment to generate optimum designs of complicated three-dimensional components.

Abstract Traditional methods of estimating package thermal performance employ numerical modeling using commercially available finite-volume or finite-element tools. Use of these tools requires training and experience in thermal modeling. This methodology restricts the ability of die designers to quickly evaluate the thermal impact of their die architecture due to the added throughput time required to enlist the services of a thermal analyst. This paper describes the development of an easy to use spreadsheet tool, which performs quick-turn numerical evaluations of the impact of non-uniform die heating. The tool employs well-established finite-volume numerical techniques to solve the steady-state, three-dimensional Fourier equation of conduction in the package geometry. Minimal input data is required and the inputs are customized using visual basic pull-down menus to assist die designers who may not be thermal experts. Data showing comparison of the estimates from the spreadsheet tool with that obtained from a conventional analysis using the commercially available finite element code ANSYS™ is also presented.

This paper presents an engineering analysis of shoulder dystocia (SD) in the human birth process which usually results in damaging the brachial plexus nerves and the humerus and/or clavicle bones of the baby. The goal is to study these injuries from the mechanical engineering point of view. Two separate finite element models of the neonatal neck and the clavicle bone have been simulated using eight-node three-dimensional elements and beam elements respectively. Simulated models have been analysed under suitable boundary conditions using the ‘SAP80’ finite element package. Finally, results obtained have been verified by comparing them with published clinical and experimental observations.

This paper is concerned with the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method for three dimensional Poisson problems with edge singularity on quasi-uniform meshes. First, we present the theoretical results for the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method with quasi-uniform meshes for elliptic problems on polyhedral domains on smooth functions in the framework of Jacobi-weighted Sobolev spaces. Second, we investigate and analyze numerical results for three dimensional Poission problems with edge singularity. Finally, we verified the theoretical predictions by the numerical computation.
