Recently, it was shown that the conserved charges of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes can be written in an explicitly gauge-invariant way in terms of the linearized Riemann tensor and the Killing vectors. Here, we employ this construction to compute the mass and angular momenta of the [Formula: see text]-dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes, which is one of the most remarkable Einstein metrics generalizing the four-dimensional rotating black hole.

We study anti-de Sitter black holes in 2 + 1 dimensions in terms of Chern–Simons gauge theory of the anti-de Sitter group coupled to a source. Taking the source to be an anti-de Sitter state specified by its Casimir invariants, we show how all the relevant features of the black hole are accounted for. The requirement that the source be a unitary representation leads to a discrete tower of excited states which provide a microscopic model for the black hole.

We construct analytical charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes surrounded by perfect fluids in four dimensional Rastall gravity. Then, we discuss the thermodynamics and phase transitions of charged AdS black holes immersed in regular matter like dust and radiation, or exotic matter like quintessence, ΛCDM type, and phantom fields. Surrounded by phantom field, the charged AdS black hole demonstrates a new phenomenon of reentrant phase transition (RPT) when the parameters Q, Np, and ψ satisfy some certain condition, along with the usual small/large black hole (SBH/LBH) phase transition for the surrounding dust, radiation, quintessence, and cosmological constant fields.

Some black hole-cosmic string models such as Reissner–Nordström, RN–de Sitter, Kerr–Newman and multi-black holes with cosmic string are given. Energy and angular momentum of a timelike particle in circular orbits in multi-black hole space–time are calculated. The geodesic equations for the timelike particles for the far region of the multi-black hole sources are calculated and small oscillations around the circular orbit obtained. It is seen that the particle's orbit precesses like the Lens–Thirring effect.

Abstract In this paper, we extend the phase space of black holes enclosed by a spherical cavity of radius rB to include $$ V=4\pi {r}_B^3/3 $$ V = 4 π r B 3 / 3 as a thermodynamic volume. The thermodynamic behavior of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black holes is then investigated in the extended phase space. In a canonical ensemble at constant pressure, we find that the aforementioned thermodynamic behavior is remarkably similar to that of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) counterparts with the cosmological constant being interpreted as a pressure. Specifically, a first-order Hawking-Page-like phase transition occurs for a Schwarzschild black hole in a cavity. The phase structure of a RN black hole in a cavity shows a strong resemblance to that of the van der Waals fluid. We also display that the Smarr relation has the same expression in both AdS and cavity cases. Our results may provide a new perspective for the extended thermodynamics of AdS black holes by analogy with black holes in a cavity.

As an intriguing topological defect, global monopole’s influence on behaviors of black holes has always been anticipated but still remains obscure. Analyzing the thermodynamics of charged Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole incorporating a global monopole manifests that the black hole undergoes a Van der Waals-like first-order phase transition near the critical point. This paper concentrates on further investigating the transition, aiming at clarifying how the global monopole affects the criticality and microstructure of the charged AdS black holes. As a highlight, this research is implemented by employing new state parameters other than (T, P, V) description and contributes to deeper understanding the rich critical phenomena and phase structure of black holes.

We investigate the energy of the gravitational wave from a binary black hole merger by the coalescence of two Kerr black holes with an orbital angular momentum. The coalescence is constructed to be consistent with particle absorption in the limit in which the primary black hole is sufficiently large compared with the secondary black hole. In this limit, we analytically obtain an effective gravitational spin–orbit interaction dependent on the alignments of the angular momenta. Then, binary systems with various parameters including equal masses are numerically analyzed. According to the numerical analysis, the energy of the gravitational wave still depends on the effective interactions, as expected from the analytical form. In particular, we ensure that the final black hole obtains a large portion of its spin angular momentum from the orbital angular momentum of the initial binary black hole. To estimate the angular momentum released by the gravitational wave in the actual binary black hole, we apply our results to observations at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory: GW150914, GW151226, GW170104, GW170608 and GW170814.

Motivated by recent developments of black hole thermodynamics in de Rham, Gabadadze, and Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity, we study the critical behaviors of topological Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the presence of Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. Here the cosmological constant appears as a dynamical pressure of the system and its corresponding conjugate quantity is interpreted as thermodynamic volume. This shows that, besides the Van der Waals-like SBH/LBH phase transitions, the so-called reentrant phase transition (RPT) appears in four-dimensional space-time when the coupling coefficients cim2 of massive potential and Born-Infeld parameter b satisfy some certain conditions. In addition, we also find the triple critical points and the small/intermediate/large black hole phase transitions for d=5.

Abstract We study rotating global AdS solutions in five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a multiplet complex scalar within a cohomogeneity-1 ansatz. The onset of the gravitational and scalar field superradiant instabilities of the Myers-Perry-AdS black hole mark bifurcation points to black resonators and hairy Myers-Perry-AdS black holes, respectively. These solutions are subject to the other (gravitational or scalar) instability, and result in hairy black resonators which contain both gravitational and scalar hair. The hairy black resonators have smooth zero-horizon limits that we call graviboson stars. In the hairy black resonator and graviboson solutions, multiple scalar components with different frequencies are excited, and hence these are multioscillating solutions. The phase structure of the solutions are examined in the microcanonical ensemble, i.e. at fixed energy and angular momenta. It is found that the entropy of the hairy black resonator is never the largest among them. We also find that hairy black holes with higher scalar wavenumbers are entropically dominant and occupy more of phase space than those of lower wavenumbers.

Based on the observations that there exists an analogy between the Reissner–Nordström–Anti-de Sitter (RN–AdS) black holes and the van der Waals–Maxwell liquid-gas system, in which a correspondence of variables is (ϕ,q) ↔ (V,P), we study the Ruppeiner geometry, defined as Hessian matrix of black hole entropy with respect to the internal energy (not the mass) of black hole and electric potential (angular velocity), for the RN, Kerr and RN–AdS black holes. It is found that the geometry is curved and the scalar curvature goes to negative infinity at the Davies' phase transition point for the RN and Kerr black holes. Our result for the RN–AdS black holes is also in good agreement with the one about phase transition and its critical behavior in the literature.

We explore the Hawking evaporation of two-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS2), dilatonic black hole coupled with conformal matter, and derive the Page curve for the entanglement entropy of radiation. We first work in a semiclassical approximation with backreaction. We show that the end-point of the evaporation process is AdS2 with a vanishing dilaton, i.e., a regular, singularity-free, zero-entropy state. We explicitly compute the entanglement entropies of the black hole and the radiation as functions of the horizon radius, using the conformal field theory (CFT) dual to AdS2 gravity. We use a simplified toy model, in which evaporation is described by the forming and growing of a negative mass configuration in the positive-mass black hole interior. This is similar to the “islands” proposal, recently put forward to explain the Page curve for evaporating black holes. The resulting Page curve for AdS2 black holes is in agreement with unitary evolution. The entanglement entropy of the radiation initially grows, closely following a thermal behavior, reaches a maximum at half-way of the evaporation process, and then goes down to zero, following the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy of the black hole. Consistency of our simplified model requires a non-trivial identification of the central charge of the CFT describing AdS2 gravity with the number of species of fields describing Hawking radiation.
