In the present review, we show how the chemical variability of phthalocyanines allowed to synthesize a broad range of hybrid materials. The combination of phthalocyanines or related derivatives with polymers or carbonaceous materials led to efficient chemical sensors. It is shown how the incorporation of macrocyclic molecules in hybrid materials highly modifies the structural and morphological characteristics of the materials. Rugosity, specific surface and porosity being key parameters in the analyte-sensing material interactions, these modifications highly improve the performance of chemical sensors. This is the reason why they are particularly promising materials for the development of new chemical sensors, associated with electrochemical, conductometric or optical transducers.

In the present review, we show how the chemistry of lanthanide macrocyclic complexes, which began almost 50 years ago in Russia, is still very active. Additionally to bisphthalocyanines complexes, triple-decker, but also quadruple- and quintuple-decker complexes have been synthesized via new chemical routes. The driving force for the development of this chemistry arises from the wide range of possible applications. Owing to their very high conductivity, compared to that of monophthalocyanines, LnPc2 and Ln2Pc3 complexes are used as molecular semiconductors in electronic devices. The radical nature of LnPc2 complexes makes them easily oxidized and reduced. This is the reason why they are particularly promising materials for the development of new chemical sensors, associated with both conductimetric and optical transducers.

ABSTRACTInterleaved monomers and polymers between the sheets of layered double hydroxide (LDH) (hydrotalcite-type) materials are considered as carbonaceous source. After a charring process constituted of a carbonisation and a subsequent demineralisation, carbonaceous materials of interesting textural properties were obtained. The initial preparation of the polymer LDH hybrid phase was found to strongly orientate the textural characteristics, microporous volume and creation of mesoporosity. Several methods to assess the microporosity, t-plot, αs and Dubinin-Astakhov, are compared. Specific surface area as high as 2300 m2/g measured by BET method and microporous volume of 1.07 mL/g were obtained. The carbonaceous materials tested as supercapacitor in acidic medium present capacitances in the range 60 - 120 F/g associated to a good behavior in cycling.

The present review aims to summarize the research efforts undertaken in the last few years in the development and testing of hydrogel-clay nanocomposites proposed as carriers for controlled release of diverse drugs. Their advantages, disadvantages and different compositions of polymers/biopolymers with diverse types of clays, as well as their interactions are discussed. Illustrative examples of studies regarding hydrogel-clay nanocomposites are detailed in order to underline the progressive researches on hydrogel-clay-drug pharmaceutical formulations able to respond to a series of demands for the most diverse applications. Brief descriptions of the different techniques used for the characterization of the obtained complex hybrid materials such as: swelling, TGA, DSC, FTIR, XRD, mechanical, SEM, TEM and biology tests, are also included. Enlightened by the presented data, we can suppose that hydrogel-clay nanocomposites will still be a challenging subject of global assiduous researches. We can dare to dream to an efficient drug delivery platform for the treatment of multiple affection concomitantly, these being undoubtedly like ”a tree of life” bearing different kinds of fruits and leaves proper for human healing.

The construction of chemical sensors that can distinguish molecular chirality has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to the significance of chiral organic molecules and the importance of detecting their absolute configuration and chiroptical purity. The supramolecular chirality sensing strategy has shown promising potential due to its advantages of high throughput, sensitivity, and fast chirality detection. This review focuses on chirality sensors based on macrocyclic compounds. Macrocyclic chirality sensors usually have inherent complexing ability towards certain chiral guests, which combined with the signal output components, could offer many unique advantages/properties compared to traditional chiral sensors. Chirality sensing based on macrocyclic sensors has shown rapid progress in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances in chirality sensing based on both achiral and chiral macrocyclic compounds, especially newly emerged macrocyclic molecules.
