A novel strontium titanate/binary metal sulfide (SrTiO3/SnCoS4) heterostructure was synthesized by a simple two-step hydrothermal method. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance of SrTiO3/SnCoS4 composites was evaluated in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic performance of SrTiO3/SnCoS4-5% is much higher than that of pure SrTiO3, SnCoS4, SrTiO3/SnS2 and SrTiO3/CoS2. The SrTiO3/SnCoS4 composite material with 5[Formula: see text]wt.% of SnCoS4 showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for MO degradation, and the degradation rate could reach 95% after 140[Formula: see text]min irradiation time. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was ascribed to not only the improvement of visible light absorption efficiency, but also the construction of a heterostructure which make it possible to effectively separate photoexcited electrons and holes in the two-phase interface.

Visible-light-driven hydrogen production through photocatalysis has attracted enormous interest owing to its great potential to address energy and environmental issues. However, photocatalysis possesses several limitations to overcome for practical applications, such as low light absorption efficiency, rapid charge recombination, and poor stability of photocatalysts. Here, the preparation of efficient noble metal–semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production is presented. The prepared ternary Rh–TiO2–CeO2 hybrid photocatalysts exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance toward the hydrogen production reaction compared with their counterparts, ascribed to the synergistic combination of Rh, TiO2, and CeO2.

A novel kind of cyanuric-acid-modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)/kaolinite (m-CN/KA) composite with enhanced visible light-driven photocatalytic performance was fabricated through a facile two-step process. Rhodamine B (RhB) was taken as the target pollutant to study the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts. It is indicated that the cyanuric acid modification significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination in comparison with the other reference samples. The apparent rate constant of m-CN/KA is almost 1.9 times and 4.0 times those of g-C3N4/kaolinite and bare g-C3N4, respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance of m-CN/KA could be ascribed, not only to the generation of abundant pore structure and reactive sites, but also to the efficient separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of m-CN/KA was also presented in this paper. It could be anticipated that this novel and efficient, metal-free, mineral-based photocatalytic composite has great application prospects in organic pollutant degradation.

Abstract A novel binary BiSI/Ag2CO3 photocatalyst with excellent visible light-driven photocatalytic performance was prepared. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B(RhB) under the irradiation of visible light. The results showed that the BiSI improves the photocatalytic activity of BiSI/Ag2CO3. Moreover, when the mass ratio of BiSI in BiSI/Ag2CO3 composites was 40%, the as-prepared BiSI/Ag2CO3 composite exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for degrading RhB. Finally, the possible mechanism for photodegradation over the BiSI/Ag2CO3 composites is also proposed.

Nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal method using citric acid and urea as the carbon and nitrogen precursors, respectively. Due to different post-treatment processes, the obtained NGQDs with different surface modifications exhibited blue light emission, while their visible-light absorption was obviously different. To further understand the roles of nitrogen dopants and N-containing surface groups of NGQDs in the photocatalytic performance, their corresponding composites with TiO2 were utilized to degrade RhB solutions under visible-light irradiation. A series of characterization and photocatalytic performance tests were carried out, which demonstrated that NGQDs play a significant role in enhancing visible-light driven photocatalytic activity and the carrier separation process. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the NGQDs/TiO2 composites can possibly be attributed to an enhanced visible light absorption ability, and an improved separation and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a typical layered transition metal sulfide, has been widely used in photocatalysis. Here, we report layered MoS2 nanosheet-coated TiO2 heterostructures that were prepared using a simple photo-assisted deposition method. The as-prepared samples were investigated in detail by using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results demonstrated that the MoS2 nanosheets uniformly covered the outer surface of TiO2. The visible light-sensitive photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the removal of methylene blue (MB) and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) in aqueous solution. Thus, the MoS2/TiO2 heterostructures exhibited improved photocatalytic degradation activity under visible light compared with the pure TiO2. Under visible light irradiation for 90 min, the degradation efficiencies of MB and 2-CP over the MoS2/TiO2 sample (sunlight irradiation time: 30 min) are as high as 93.6% and 70.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity is proposed on the basis of the comprehensively investigated results from the radical trapping experiments, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance analysis. The hole oxidation, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide anion radicals act as the active species simultaneously in the photodegradation of the dye molecules. However, of these species, hole oxidation played the most important roles in the photocatalytic reaction.
